Dead Boy Detectives (2024)
It's decent enough
As a big fan of the Sandman show, I was intrigued to learn Dead Boy Detectives had dropped. To me it seems like a mix between a teen drama, Scooby Doo and Goosebumps. I am also getting some Good Omens tribute. However, each episode's story is interesting, the acting (which is decent) is a bit goofy and the vfx style is a bit retro which makes the show curiously fascinating. The teen drama is what throws me off a bit but I guess it is fitting considering the age of the main characters. I do wish the showrunnes would have tried to cater to an older age group as well, considering that the show belongs in the Sandman universe, because throughout season 1 I couldn't shake the feeling that the audience this was intended for are way way younger than me. I find the mix of gore and teen drama wildly confusing, but at the same time the show managed to keep me locked in. So the cons are the cringe moments, the overuse or words brills and aces, the absolutely creepy story involving the cat king and the weakest storyline and acting I've seen in a looong time regarding the demon David.
Fallout (2024)
Surprise, it's actually good
With how The Witcher and other highly praised games have been televised into shows, I didn't have high hopes for Fallout... I haven't played the games but so many of my friends have, and everyone was afraid to get hyped up only to be let down. I saw the trailer and wasn't really that interested, but boy did that trailer not kiss and tell. After I got some hype recommendations from friends I decided to give Fallout a chance, and from episode 2 I was IN. The acting, the music, the props, the storytelling, the camera angles and details. It's just *chef's kiss*. The showrunners have managed to tell a story with humor and suspense and this amazing world has come to life in the most brilliant way. I take my hat off to everyone involved and can't wait for season 2.
Irish Wish (2024)
Came to watch the scenery
Without reading reviews first I still knew what I was throwing myself into. I was not wrong. It's a poorly written rom-com that has a couple of sweet moments. I am thinking poor Ed must be desperate for work for saying yes to this movie. He did his job fine though, he's a great actor after all, guess it can't be easy working with a bad script. I feel like this is just like every other Lindsay Lohan movie so didn't expect much from her. The fake laughs were always on point though. I'm very glad they showed a little of the scenery, should have been more nature views and cultural moments. If you need to just kill some time it's not the worst watch, as long as you don't have high expectations.
Beckham (2023)
Interesting for non-football fans as well
I have absolutely zero interest in football, but I was a kid when Spice Girls rose to fame so obviously I kind of knew who David Beckham was as well since I was such a huge SG fan. When this dropped on Netflix I thought "why not". I found this documentary to be interesting and emotional, and I was not bored for one second. I like that they got so many people talking and sharing stories and perspectives, and the amount of archive footage shown was amazing. Documentary explains in a straightforward and linear way the journey David had, and the immense resilience that he had to keep playing and keep pushing. The friendships, the love, the trials of hardship, the hate, the wins... The documentary is just one big package of it all, and even though he had such great success it's nice to see he still seems very humble and happy.
The Out-Laws (2023)
No, just no.
The only cool thing about this movie is Pierce Brosnan and Ellen Barkin. I can't believe they agreed to do this, and that is just giving them more mad respect since the movie is so bad. Or it makes me wonder if they were desperate. Either way, they play their roles really well. At one point I was sure it was Devine's own script because his character was double as idiotic as usual, and since he always plays this character in ANY movie he's in... Well you see my thought.
There are some semi-funny lines and scenes but mostly it's incredibly cringe and annoying toddler humor, mostly always from Devine's part. The idea of the plot is what drew me in, but the writing is just... Abhorrent.
Good on Paper (2021)
Only slightly amusing
As title says, only slightly amusing, but also a lot of cringe that stems partly from bad writing and on occasion what I'm guessing is on purpose. Didn't turn out like I expected but that's the good part of the movie, so the surprise of it not just being a regular rom-com was enjoyable. Eliza just being her screaming self though which I honestly don't think the movie needed because Andrea did come off a little bit..nuts. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Eliza's comedy usually in it's natural setting (stand up) but I don't really think acting is something she should pursue if she can't get out of her stand up comedian persona. The movie's point regarding women (well a lot of women) not needing fancy things but someone who is genuinely a nice person stand pretty strong in the movie though, and that is something I personally think they got through. Not the worst movie I've seen but I wouldn't watch it again.
Firefly Lane (2021)
It's ok
Heigl is brilliant in her role, Chalke is decent but I guess it's not her fault her character is so pathetic. (Apparently Kate was only a decent person in her teens).
The show is interesting in the way that it has multiple flashbacks to the past to connect the dots to the present, and the teen actresses are doing a great job portraying the youngest version of Tully and Kate.
However, the different scenarios the show presents as having happened to the women are often incredibly boring. I actually learned to skip a lot of dialogue because they're just there as empty fillers. The most interesting moments are actually from their teens.
The funny thing is, I don't feel like I have missed anything at all by skipping some minutes almost every episode. I can still answer why x and x happened, and what they're referring to in other dialogues. Honestly, the only reason I'm watching is because the plot is intriguing but all the fillers on the way are NOT.
I've also deducted some points for getting enraged every time they say "Mularkey" in the show because it's probably like a 1000 times over 2 seasons, no idea why the showrunners have this insane obsession with that character's name.
Händelser vid vatten (2023)
More than a murder story
This is so much more than just a murder story. It's also a brilliant semi-dramatic and quite touching story about Annie, Mia and Birger's lives living in the middle of nowhere (and then some) somewhere in Sweden. The first episode I was confused but I quickly understood the method of storytelling, and I was intrigued so I kept watching. After episode 2 I was hooked. I was a bit creeped out by the realization of how difficult things were back then (1973) without access to the technology we have today, and that made me feel like this show is special from a lot of other crime stories. Some events I guessed pretty early what was going on, and other events had me surprised.
The calm but yet hostile atmosphere that was presented in ep 1 was managed throughout. I'd say this is a relaxing watch for anyone interested in fictional crime.
You People (2023)
Hard watch but kinda glad I saw it through
I understand what they tried to do making the white man the "victim" and go less hard on the black woman, but it kind of backfires as white people always have it easier anyway. I also understand what they tried to set up for with mixing cultures and saying this is something that probably a lot of couples go through but it was incredibly uncomfortable. 90% of the movie is such a tough watch with all the embarassing and cringe scenes mostly Ezra but also Amira is set up for, and the nice parts just don't make up for it. Nothing on the acting, I think all parties played their roles very well. The only thing I thought was truly funny in this movie was Ezra's dad's obsession with Xzibit.
Forbannelsen (2022)
Slow burn with an interesting plot
I quite enjoyed this movie although I expected more. What? I don't know. Just...more. Although it was quite satisfying to watch. I wish they used more of the Sami lore, beliefs, traditions and culture in this movie, felt they barely scratched the surface and instead opted to deep root it more in the Smith family and plague.
All the actors are absolutely brilliant in this, most of the cast I've never seen before (except Dennis Storhøi), but they all played their characters exceptionally. I'm always sceptical to child actors but the girl playing My was phenomenal. Atmosphere is definitely creepy and dark, music and ambience fitting. I usually never watch horror movies and this one was more like a thriller to me.
I feel like this is one of those movies you only watch once, but I'm glad I did.
Alaska Daily (2022)
Decent
The underlying points here about Alaskas ruralness, indigenous women going missing, newspapers going bankrupt and how dangerous it is when the police are missing correct training and empathy for human life are truly important and well put in this show.
It's a slow burn but it's a decent one. Hilary Swank obviously does a great job and she has some good counterparts, but there are some actors who seem to be in their first acting gig. However, they do not drag down the show. For me it was the slow burn that made the show a little less tense for my liking, but I enjoyed the plot and the character development.
Traces (2019)
Watch it only if you've run out of options...
I was bored during episode 1, and then I never recovered from that. There is no chemistry between any of the actors, but that only felt believable on Emma's first days in the new job, because who wouldn't be uncomfortable in a new job with strangers. Speaking of Emma, I genuinely thought this was a teen crime drama, until I realized she was supposedly in her twenties. The actress looks like a teenager and paired with a male counterpart that looks about 40, it seriously made me uncomfortable and I can't understand what the casting directors were thinking! The only believable and even likeable characters were Emma's lab partner and the detective inspector. The rest of the bunch were flat and monotone, giving up no personality traits which made it seem like no one really wanted to be in the show at all.
The plot was pretty easy to see through as soon as the boyfriend's dad was introduced, and of course there were finally some pretty easily available evidence as soon as they just got the case up and running again. I honestly didn't feel excitement, curiosity, nervewrecked, shocked or any other feeling a good crime show is supposed to give. The only satisfaction is the insinuation that the case was closed with justice.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023)
Majors carrying the movie almost by himself
Okay, so what did the writers take before writing this script? This is poor coming from Marvel, and someone is trying to be funny like Taika Waititi but failing hard. Instead of laughing of scenes that I am sure were supposed to be funny, there were a lot of headshaking because things were just BIZARRE.
Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly totally lost their chemistry in this movie, the acting from almost everyone was stiff. The whole "we are a loving family" vibe this movie is trying to portray feels forced and I did not believe it for a second. The actors who are carrying this movie for everyone are Majors and Pfeiffer, but especially Majors. I didn't understand his character in Loki series and thought he just acted poorly but this man is actually pretty amazing, and now I understand his character in Loki so much more based on the way he acted in Ant-Man. I am looking forward to seeing him again in the next installment he's in.
The plot is fine, not really surprising but fine, but the movie is slow in build up with absolutely no memorable scenes. The quantum realm looks stunning with what seems like a lot of inspiration from Star Wars, but that alone doesn't help an otherwise flat and close to boring movie.
I've watched the previous Ant-Man movies several times but this does not feel like it's worth a re-watch at all, which is a shame.
The Pale Blue Eye (2022)
Interesting slow burn
Melling and Bale are both extraordinary in their roles. This movie is a slow burn, sometimes perhaps too slow, but the storytelling and atmosphere is quite beautiful. I must admit there were times I felt like I was going to doze off but then something happened that got me wide awake again, almost feeling frustrating but rewarding at the same time.
I admit I have not read the book, but the storyline here is interesting, turning Edgar Allen Poe into a puzzle solving, somewhat detective. Refreshing movie in this day and age. Will probably never watch again, but I am glad I decided to give it a go.
If you're a fan of mysteries and thrillers this might be a movie suitable for you.
A Storm for Christmas (2022)
Pretty cozy
At first I was really confused because there are a lot of very different characters, but after a couple of episodes you get a pretty good grasp of who they are. All the actors are doing a good job portraying their character, and makes the story decently believable.
It was a wonderful idea to have different nationalities a part of this show, I feel most of the time it works what seems effortlessly.
The soundtrack and mood is great in every episode, and you feel you get closer and closer to a happy ending for all.
There are some very weird dialogues here and there, and things I can't imagine anyone would say... One character swaps very cringey between languages for apparently no reason, and others just have truly odd lines. I also feel there is a character who got totally forgotten about which left me wondering why we didn't get to see their happy ending... But all in all, decent christmas show and worth a watch.
Let It Snow (2019)
Tryhard is not a christmas movie
Wow. I realize I'm not in the targeted group but I can enjoy the occasional relaxed christmas movie, this isn't even that. It just snows and the day happens to be Christmas day. The script is absolutely horrible and seems like it's been written by a teenager. Unlikely scenarios, ridiculous dialogue, quick backstory fillers with little and no apparent meaning, and not to mention the extreme overacting by every single actor. It's a tragedy and I can't believe I wasted my time watching this. It's clear someone desperately wanted an adult-style christmas love story movie (but with high schoolers!!) considering the style of dialogue, the "I'm such an adult" attitudes from everyone. Oh yeah and there's a random pig for absolutely no reason.
The School for Good and Evil (2022)
Okayish for a rainy day it you're in need of some magic
The movie takes an interesting spin on magic and fairy tales, and the topic of teens coming of age to realize what is worth your time and what is not. The movie (not unexpectedly) suffers from somewhat poor acting and cringe moments, perhaps suitable for the intended audience, what do I know. I do like parts of the story as some events unfold, such as the scene by the lake and the scene in the Evil classroom. The cgi is not too bad actually, some effects and creatures are made very well. Also realize I am not in the intended age group for this movie so I tried to not judge it too harshly but rather see it as light entertainment...but some parts of the movie I can't even imagine anyone would see as "cool" and fitting for modern day society, both due to horrible writing of the scenes and the way these poor actors had to act them out - which in my opinion knocks this movie down several rating points.
All in all, not the worst movie I've watched but it isn't the first movie I'd show to a teenager interested in fantasy.
The Stranger (2022)
A really uncomfortable watch
The movie is dark, creepy and really drags you in.
I can't remember the last time my teeth were on edge for so long; I was just twisting and couldn't relax. Felt like I had to be on guard, ans that feeling got me glued to the screen. The atmosphere they create using light, soundtrack, the way the dialogues are written and acted out is so rarely seen nowadays. Sean Harris is absolutely brilliant and makes me believe I'd turn around screaming if I saw him on the street. Brilliant acting all around, but this guy is truly something else.
The movie feels a bit long but in the end it's really time well spent!
She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022)
Funny, different, refreshing
Love the way they've kept She-Hulk like she is in the comics, probably knowing how that would go down with the manbabies, but did it anyway. Women tho, we get it. We get the whole show, we see the message and we understand every single thing the writers are insinuating, and altho it's a little sad to know this is how the world is, thank god Marvel made it funny.
Tatiana Maslany is made for this role, and does her job so incredibly well that it seems she's always been She-Hulk! I enjoy the way the story is written, each episode stands on its own legs but is still part of the bigger story. The only thing I was disappointed about, was the finale. It feels a little flat and lacks the feeling of real payback and justice for She-Hulk.
Elvis (2022)
Good but after a while it feels neverending
Tom Hanks and Austin Butler are both amazing in this, and I can understand why Butler struggled to get back to himself after doing such an incredible job learning "how to be" Elvis. It's also a very interesting angle to tell the story, and Tom Hanks did a good job as the main storyteller. Production was creat, the sound was great. Some questionable modern music involved that I didn't understand the need for, but oh well.. However, halfway in I started to lose interest, as the pace of the movie started to seem to slow down. The start of the movie it felt like the writers and directors really knew how to get people interested and invested emotionally, but by the end of the movie I had lost the interest completely. I had to take a break from it but coming back to it I realized I still wasn't as intrigued anymore. Didn't matter that the last years of Elvis' life was really sad, it didn't feel like it held the emotional grip that Elvis deserves.
Devil in Ohio (2022)
A mediocre watch for a boring weekend
The adult actors carry the show while the teens seem to have no idea how to act at all, it's incredibly cringy to watch. Their acting is stiff and flat, fake smiles, fake laughter, and the writing of their lines is utterly stupid. There's no chemistry between the siblings, and they can't even make their bickering believable. I agree with a few other reviews that claim the family situations are a cliché, and some of the events don't bring anything to the story and could easily have been skipped. The actress who plays Mae does a good job though, her acting is genuine in creating a mysterious (and a tad creepy) confused and brainwashed teen.
The plot regarding the satanic cult is very interesting in theory but the show stumbles ahead with actually making it interesting.
All in all, I don't regret watching it but its not worth a re-run, and it will be easily forgotten.
Oh, and I'll gladly forget the incredibly annoying intro song.
Top Gun (1986)
Read a recap instead, I wish I did
I can't remember the last time I was this bored.
The storyline is boring and filled with small events that doesn't aid the story or character arc in any way. I'm not unfamiliar with how cheesy movies from the 80's were but this one plays at a whole other level. Cringy is too kind of a word. The best part of the movie is the music and enjoying Tom Cruise's pre-fame teeth. The tracks gets used way too much tho, by the end of the movie they don't trigger emotions anymore because they've lost their effect. I was glad however that the rivalry between Maverick and Ice was kept at a low-macho level, because the movie was annoying enough without some extreme head-to-head butting, altho the existing low-level rivalry has absolutely no effect on the story or the development of characters. Same can be said about the romance or friendships seen in this movie. The movie has absolutely no emotional effect whatsoever, and I say that as a person who gets easily moved.
Plus One (2019)
It was fine
Started out quite weird I think but it was like the main characters grew into their chemistry. Absolutely nothing new to see in this movie but it was fine. Cozy, slightly funny. What saves it is definitely the chemistry between the actors but the movie is definitely carried by the actress who plays Alice.
Deep Water (2022)
Uncomfortable but in a good way
In my opinion, those who wait for some extreme ending wants a crime movie, not a thriller.
The movie was pretty good. Dark and a little creepy.
Definitely not an erotic thriller, more a psychological one. Kept me on edge. Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas were great, you could sense the dangerous chemistry between the characters. Melinda yearns after the thrill of being desired yet free, but she obviously wants to be loved. Vic is a sociopath who loves his wife but allows her a certain amount of freedom as to probably not bore himself to death in the very dull lives they live. I think this movie did a great job showing how the characters need for what they want in life causes situations they both accept no matter the cost. The crucible effect in this triller is definitely the fact that whatever happens, the characters seem desperate to allow anything for their habits to stay the same. I believe the snails (you have to starve them before you eat them, but Vic keeps them as pets only) is a metaphor for their relationship. Neither party wants the relationship to end, because they wouldn't make it without one another, so they nurture their twisted relationship in their own way.
Negative points for the annoying child which obviously didn't even really hold the couple together, and her poorly written dialouge. Also some negative points for revealing Vic's darkness way too soon, but I think it was given from the start anyway.
Chloe (2022)
Creepy but very entertaining
This show gave me the chills so many times. At first I thought it was going to feel like a real annoying slow burner, but as the episodes go on it absolutely didn't feel that way, even though the story does take time to unfold. Great writing for the most part, a little bit disappointed in the ending as it felt very anti-climatic but overall a really great experience. Erin Doherty is magnificent as the lead character, all the characters in general are well written and well played out. Dark and creepy atmosphere, suitable ambience and soundtrack overall.
No idea why this show doesn't have a higher score.
