Fortress (2021)
These movies are almost never as bad as the reviews state.
It's cheesy and the dialog is awful, but I love cheesy action movies.
I loved it when Nick Cage started doing B movies, and I love it now that Bruce Willis has been doing it. I don't know if they're just trying to give these small movies the credibility of a big name or if they just think they're fun, either way I always think it's worth a watch.
It's not gonna win any awards or anything, but the story is put together ok, and I got an hour and a half of entertainment out of it. Chad Michael Murray is actually pretty great as the villian.
If you like cheesy action films, you can't go wrong with this one.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Someone at WB laughed and said "Ya I loved it" when they read the script
Because they thought it was a joke.
Between the droning on and on, the robot Pokémon, the awful fight scenes, a 1/4 of the movie being clips from the first 3 movies, the awful soundtrack, CGI that wasn't as good as the older movies, and the way they just shrugged their shoulders through the ending, what am I supposed to have liked?
I genuinely don't see where some of these even "it was ok" reviews are coming from. It was absolutely awful. The first 30 minutes were very solid, and then it fell off a cliff and didn't even try to climb back up.
I usually like pretty much every movie I watch. The only ones I've genuinely hated are Stuck on You, and Open Water. The Matrix Resurrections was so outstandingly worse than both of those movies I just can't understand why it got the go ahead.
If you're on the fence about watching it, turn around now and don't look back, it's not worth it. If you're going to watch it anyways, prepare for disappointment to keep you awake at night.
SAS: Red Notice (2021)
Good action flick for a Sunday afternoon.
The semi-pro B team critics apparently don't like SAS: Red notice, but it was pretty good.
Nice action, cohesive story, good acting, what else can you ask for. If you like action movies you'll probably dig this. When I finished I went around looking to see if there was a second movie, hopefully they make another one.
Nobody care's you guys don't like Ruby Rose.
Prisoners of the Ghostland (2021)
Super weird, I loved it.
It's cheesy, weird, and feels like someone tossed a bunch of words in a blender and used that to make the idea for the story.
But, it's in a good way imo. If you like post nuclear apocalypse, samurai, body horror, western, comedies, then you'll probably like it too.
Nick cage, is the most fun to watch when he's making these weird B movies.
People need to stop taking everything so seriously.
The Last Witch Hunter (2015)
Stiffest dialog I've ever seen in a movie
Don't get me wrong, it's not a horrible film. But there are a lot of parts where they seem like they're literally reading off cue cards.
All in all worth a watch, the CGI is cool, the story is pretty decent, Vin Diesel makes a good action star, etc.
Cherry (2021)
Phenomenal Movie
Cinematography was great.
Story was great.
Acting was great.
Music was great.
The whole movie was very well put together. Probably the best thing I've seen this year. If you're on the fence you should get off it and watch this.
Breach (2020)
Gloriously Cheesy
I'm probably a bit biased, but I love cheesy scifi movies. The fact that Bruce Willis and Thomas Jane were in this one makes it all the better.
It was a bit dry, but this wasn't going for any Oscars or anything.
Passed an hour and a half and I'll probably watch it again at some point.
Shooter (2016)
A very decent show through and through.
I don't believe I spoil any of the show in this review.
I almost didn't pick this show up because of the bad overall reviews I had seen after its first season.
But lo and behold I found myself with some spare time over the weekend, so I binge watched it in the background while I worked on some fun computer stuff.
It just goes to show how unreliable professional reviews are as a whole, because this show is good television.
The acting is well done, the story is well laid out, it's consistent, and it has a well done ending to the story.
I always know I really liked a show when I wan't to watch more after the final episode, but at the same time I'm happy with how they wrapped everything up. Shows that end up on that list always end up being re-watchers for me.
Bob Lee Swagger is a great character. Ryan Phillippe does a great job bringing him to life and keeping him sane. His southern accent gets a little "extra" during that last 3rd season, but the quality of the writing really makes it a non issue.
While all the other actors do a very good job in this show, I really feel like I should bring up Shantel VanSanten playing Julie Swagger. All too often these types of shows end up ruining their female leads. A prime example is The Blacklist's Elizabeth Keen played by Megan Boone. At some point a decision is made to completely rewrite a character to inject conflict with one of the show leads. It never pans out and it's one of the quickest ways to ruin a show in my opinion.
Julie Swagger stays badass from the very beginning, she never changes, and I appreciate that. More shows should take that kind of care with their female characters.
It's a great show, I'm trying not to spoil any of it. If you've passed it up for a while like I did then do yourself a favor and give it a watch. It's poor professional reviews aren't warranted.
Lucifer (2016)
A strong 3 seasons
The show is good
The actors are good, especially Tom Ellis as Lucifer, he absolutely kills it.
The locations are what you'd expect form a police procedural plus a normally well done nightclub that's often full of people and exciting.
The show is definitely worth a watch.
But...
Go into it with your eyes open. It is at it's core a police procedural that normally solves cases with the use of fantasy. There are definitely fantasy elements to the show, especially in the later seasons. But if you're looking for a comic book adaptation or you don't like police procedural it might not be the show for you.
And finally a personal opinion
Seasons 1-3 in my opinion are fantastic, they're really great TV, the writing seems tight, and it was a joy to watch. Season 4 falls off the wagon some, well, imo a great deal. I think it kind of starts becoming a chore to watch. The dynamic between the main characters is drawn out and boring. Like one of those "get it over with" situations that can break a show. You see it in other shows as well like Supernatural and Vampire diaries. They change a core dynamic into something that people either love or hate, and I almost always end up hating those.
I think they could have wrapped this up at season 4, they had a fantastic "out" for Lucifer to leave the show on a really good ending that was glossed over midway through. I don't think a 5th season is going to do well story wise without some changes in how they approach it, but hopefully I'm surprised.
Long story short though it's a strong show that's definitely worth the watch.
The Predator (2018)
You'll Probably Have a Good Time
It's hard to compare every movie to every movie. For example when rating a movie you wouldn't compare Jurassic Park to Steel Magnolia, it doesn't make sense. But I feel like that's how a lot people rate movies, they compare what they've just seen to the best thing they've seen.
The Predator is catching a lot of heat it doesn't deserve. Does it try to be Predator? No, Does it try to take itself too seriously? Not even a little bit. Is the acting AAA? Not even close. Honestly some of the effects effects are cheesy, the story intros are really generic, it's not the best movie ever made.
But..
It is really really fun to watch, and not even close to terrible. The action scenes are fast paced, the humor stays on track the whole movie, you actually feel a bit of something for the characters, and it's chock full of holy shit moments. They do all this while making it feel like a Predator movie and not just a movie with a Predator in it.
As I said before, it's not the best movie in the world but it is fully solid. Ive got a policy, if my wife skips a film and I feel like I need to talk her into going to see it it gets at least an 8. If you want to listen to the whispered laughs and "holy shits" of a theater full of people having fun watching a movie give it a go.
Incoming (2018)
Fun movie
I'm not sure why the reviews are painting this as glaringly bad. It's by far not close to a 1 star film. Storyline was pretty decent, the space prison taken over by the prisoners theme has been done before but I personally don't think it's overused. Scott Adkins as usual is an awesome action star. The choreography of the few fight scenes was well done and the acting is not half bad. The main villain does a great job in my opinion, I might have to see what other movies he's in as he seems like a decent enough actor.
It's a generally decent action movie worth a watch when you just want something fun to disappear in. Can't really fault much about it, I guess some of the CG is low budget but I didn't really expect it not to be. It isn't going to pull any Oscars but it is surely not bad. Give it a go
Sleepless (2017)
I thought it was great
I watch movies to be entertained, Sleepless definitely did that. While not at the top of its class when it comes to crime action/drama, it had a lot going for it in my opinion. The fight scenes were well done, the scenery was dark but was still able to show off the glitz and glamour that Vegas is known for, and the story-line wasn't half bad. I was expecting to see a bit of Collateral in this, and I feel like that's what I got only with a bit more action and less Tom Cruise.
Don't go in thinking you're going to be seeing some Oscar worthy film, that isn't what this is. If you are expecting to watch a good crime action flick with Jamie Fox kicking ass then you will be happy with what you see.
APB (2017)
Great first episode, left me wanting more
Fantastic first episode.
It was exciting, futuristic, and not too over the top. If you are wanting a story like Minority Report this might not be it. The show bases its fiction on what could be technology in the not so far future. The show is basically what would Elon Musk do if he decided to privatize the police for the good of a city. I am excited to see more for sure.
I've looked at some of the other reviews and fail to see the negative point they were wanting to make. The show is fantasy, it isn't supposed to be a commentary on modern crime. I don't believe its going out of its way to mar public policy either. Instead it focuses on an actual problem "the under-funding and under-manning of police forces in the US" and solves it with a bit of science fiction. Its the same policies, the same over arching organization, just funded better. That being said the one thing I did find true in those reviews is if you are not looking for a science fiction show the A.P.B is definitely not for you.
Ender's Game (2013)
If your expecting an accurate portrayal of the book...
This has got to be one of my favorite books. That being said, I believe where they failed in this movie conversion is density of story. They tried to fit way too much of the book onto the screen. I don't like to post spoilers so I will be very vague. Certain big ticket items of the book were changed into a couple of minutes of screen time. I know its not possible to include everything but these scenes were pivotal for character development. Maybe this would have been a bit better suited as a television show. All I know is that if you are a fan of the book and you know the material, there is a chance you might be sorely disappointed in this movie.
