Uncoupled (2022)
Harmless fun with a serious undertone
I enjoyed 'Uncoupled'. I'm a divorced, still single gay man, 60 years old and I really don't get all the bitter reactions. Maybe it's because I have a progressive and steadfastly positive nature.
Yes, 'Uncoupled' is cheesy, frivolous, stereotypical and unrealistic with all the (semi-)swanky lifestyles and bubbles, chiseled cheekbones and torsos, arch tones and snaps and the ruthless world of twenty-first century dating. I hasten to add that it's not a lifestyle I have ever aspired to. The acting will never be deserving of an Academy Award, Golden Globe or a BAFTA. But to my mind, it's just a harmless work of fiction.
One very, very important theme is very well showcased in this series. That of friendship, and how powerful and important that can be. I find it a great pity that the malcontents failed to appreciate it ... perhaps there's a reason for that.
After Life (2019)
Sublime viewing
A sublime trilogy, possibly the best television I've seen in many years. Written and directed by Ricky Gervais with him in the main role. I found it beautifully written. Not knowing anything about directing, I cannot comment on that. Ricky Gervais' acting is hardly Olivier-like. However, the whole is superlative.
A trilogy about, among other things, growth. All the characters grew throughout this black comedy-drama. Other themes: ill-health, death, love, grief, and, above all, friendship.
Special mentions must go to Penelope Wilton as Anne, Tony's cemetery lady-friend and Anti as Tony's (and Lisa's) dog, Brandy.
Hors normes (2019)
Truly amazing
A truly outstanding and at times an intensely moving film, 'Hors Normes' discusses a less visible side of society, autism and by society 'rejected' autistic teenagers. The film is situated in Paris, but it could be any other large city in the world. Another facet of the film, another message, Jews and Muslims working together in harmony and friendship, I found extremely pleasing. First class acting by Messrs Cassel and Kateb and supporting cast
The score was amazing too.
