La otra conquista (1998)
excellent
I just have to say that when I first saw this film about 8 years ago, I said to myself, "It is about time somebody made a film about our Mexican history". I had never seen a movie like this one before. Apparently in high school they do not teach us about it even though it is part of America. It is sad to say but like one of the lines of the film says, "Now our history is nothing but smoke", and at times it feels that way. Many people are unaware about Mexican history including Mexican-Americans. Some people do not care and have stereotypical ideas. This is a beautiful film about humanity combined with tragedy. It is one of those films that many people around the world can relate to in the sense of intruders barging in in a country, slaughtering innocent people for no reason, torturing and enslaving them, until converting them to a new religion and tradition by force. And who would of known after 8 years of watching this film I would actually have the opportunity to meet the filmmaker. And I thank him for making a great film about our Mexican history before it disappears into smoke.
Fa yeung nin wah (2000)
beautiful
I watched this movie and found it to be very beautiful including the music. I noticed that the music was on the same pace on some parts of the movie which gave it a romantic and relaxed feel to it. Though the situation of the characters were not really relaxing. Also I noticed how the filmmaker uses the medium by compressing almost every scene. The hallway in the complex seems compressed as well as the bedroom, the staircase/stairway, and the office. The filmmaker doe not use wide angles for this film. It makes me wonder if there is a reason why he does this? I mean I have never been to Hong Kong, but does he want us to feel how it was in Hong Kong in the 1960's, crowded? This was a beautiful love story without all the sex scenes that usually Hollywood movies have to add and it just makes the movie tacky sometimes. This film did not need that because you just felt the romance. Neither do all love stories have to end in a happy ending because that is not reality.
Yuki yukite, shingun (1987)
intense reality
I watched this documentary film and it is as real as it can get. I am not against Kenzo for doing what he thinks he had to do. Actually I am proud of him for standing up for the families of the soldiers that were wrongfully killed. Kenzo is definitely not a coward at all. Obviously though he had a lot of anger inside that needed to be released. He goes out there in search for the truth of what actually had happened to some of the soldiers. Basically, he just wanted justice for the soldiers that were killed after the war. The film draws you in deep and makes you ask questions about certain reasons. I understand that Kenzo was frustrated and would get violent against the men that he interviewed, but he was just desperate to get the truth out of them. He wanted to disclose the wrong-doings of these military leaders and whoever else was on top so these criminal acts would not happen again in the future. It was an awareness message to the new generation that planned to join the military forces.
Le fantôme de la liberté (1974)
hilarious
We can have the sense of freedom but are we actually free to do anything out of our own will? Maybe not everything. Like the title says 'The Phantom of Liberty', but who is liberated? The phantom? A phantom can be sensed but it has no existence. Bunuel is trying to send us a message through his film with a surrealistic touch that the idea of freedom that we think we have does not really exist. Bunuel's film goes against symmetry and he demonstrate it to us very well through this film. Everything is the opposite of what society wants us to be like. Bunuel creates these surrealistic films to raise eyebrows and for us to ask certain questions. The film was silly, shocking, entertaining and I had a great time watching it.
El espíritu de la colmena (1973)
Beautiful film
This film's mellow pace blended well with the long takes combined with the long shots bringing out the beauty of this artistic film. It shows us the everyday life of living in the country side away from the big city. But everything and everyone seems to be in the same routine, doing the same things. It seems to me that is one of the reasons the two little girls (sisters), seem to create these imaginary stories and fill themselves with curiosity of the unknown world that is out somewhere to be found. When you are a child, I am speaking for myself, you start hearing about legends and myths but there is this curiosity that makes you wonder if it is actually real or not, but what if it is? And you want to go out there in the world or wherever you may be and explore and adventure in order to find this world that is unknown. I know the film was made after the civil war, and the filmmaker show us the unhappiness of it through the parents' coldness. But he also shows us a sign of hope through the little girl's eyes that there is something out there that will make them happy again.
Idi i smotri (1985)
amazing film
First of all I just want to say that I thank God that I have never been and never would want to be in a horrific situation in my life like the Russians did in Byelorussia. The handful difficult situations and sufferings that I have been through in my lifetime does not even compare to what these poor people had to go through. It is awful, horrible and traumatizing and those survivors' hearts and souls are marked for a lifetime. That memory of the act of inhumanity by the Nazis will never go away from their minds. It just brings about so many questions. Why did the Nazis think they were better than anybody else and have to commit murder? Why did Hitler come up with this ridiculous idea? It just makes me so angry to know that there are people that have this mentality of being better than others and have to kill them in a brutal way. The film was very difficult to watch because there is no happiness what so ever and its very disturbing and full of tragedy. To me the filmmaker obviously made this film because this tragedy remains in his mind and it has not been forgotten. It is a historical film for all who know about it and for the newcomers that are arriving into this world.
