Roma (2018)
Peak filmmaking
I couldn't disagree more with reviews that say this is boring. I found it to be exhilarating - every single pixel of every single frame is used to further the story, build the world or help us understand the characters. The sound design also does the same. Genius.
L'année dernière à Marienbad (1961)
Perfection
Even after 60+ years, Marienbad still dazzles, delights and confounds. Alain Renais was a genius and this is his masterpiece. Possibly my favorite film ever made.
Her Smell (2018)
love
I don't have anything particularly original or brilliant to say - I just love love love this movie. And want to encourage as many people as I possibly can to watch it immediately!
1/1 (2018)
punk af
It's good to see a relatively new indie - clearly made way outside the system - that's different. I don't want to say original, because it draws from many sources such as Brakhage and Varda and Renais. But it's still unique.
Get Out (2017)
One of the best of the decade
Essential. So unbelievably brilliant. As filmgoers, we are fortune to live in a time when a masterpiece like this can be released and appreciated - both financially and critically.
Titane (2021)
not a joke
This is moviemaking at its absolute highest peak. A phenomenal study gender, the gaze of the director and just plain good old fashioned craziness. Great, great, great.
Revenge of the Nerds (1984)
Bad bad bad
I know this movie was super popular in the 80s and so people still watch it. But please don't. It's a hateful, tasteless, cynical money grab. It's offensive on many levels.
Jackie Brown (1997)
THE BEST
Listen, you probably aren't going to believe me, but this is Tarantino's best movie. Seriously, it really is. A masterpiece from the first frame to the last.
