Cooking Up Murder: Uncovering the Story of César Román (2024)
2 episodes too long!
This documentary has 3 episodes, but the story could have been told in just 1 (like they do with the 'Homicide Hunter' episodes). It was extremely drawn-out and for the most part, boring. I really struggled to stay engaged, which is sad considering it's a true story about a young lady who lost her life at the hands of a narcissistic sociopath. To make matters worse, his prison sentence was appalling!
For the above reason of it being a painfully slow docu-series, I would not recommend it to family or friends.
In my opinion, 3-part docu-series "American Nightmare" is exceptionally well done, and holds the viewers interest. I would recommend watching that instead.
This Is Me... Now: A Love Story (2024)
CRINGE-FEST
Scrolling through Prime for something to watch and came across "This Is Me... Now: A Love Story by J-Lo. I went in with an open mind; not having read any reviews, so had no preconceptions.
It started off OK, pretty visuals, but I quickly realised (within the first 10 minutes or so) that this was some cringe-worthy, self-indulgent, vanity project (thank goodness for the fast forward button!!!)
I did press 'play' at regular intervals to see if (by some miracle) things had improved, but no... my time & intellect was wasting away with each passing minute!!!! ...Dramatic? Nope; it really was THAT bad!!! In addition, I felt nothing but second-hand embarrassment for her as she danced her way through each mind-numbing scene (not to mention the God-awful soundtrack!)
I mean, who actually advised her that this project was a good thing to do? ...must have been the same people who advised Beyonce that her "Black Is King" garbage was a good idea 🙄
If I had to describe this 'film' in 3 words, it would be: Egotistical. Tedious. Cringe-worthy.
Take Care of Maya (2023)
Distressing, but a must watch!
I was utterly heart-broken watching this documentary! Shocked too!! The people who were meant to help this family; hurt them in the most unimaginable way! They pushed that poor mother to the point of no return!
Unforgivable!
I wanted to reach inside the TV and hug those poor children. I could feel their despair, especially Maya's, as she spoke of the future they'll miss out on. So painfully sad.
~ There are no monsters in this world, just monstrous people. Sally Smith and all those who are complicit in cases like this are monstrous people!
I wish Maya, Kyle and Jack all the very best for the trial that's due to start in September 🙏 I hope they get justice for Beata, and that those who played their part in the unimaginable suffering of this family are heavily punished.
Belfast (2021)
Oscar winner for Best Original Screenplay.
Absolutely not!!! ...The only award this movie should have won is Best Black & White film of the year, and a Golden Razzie!!!
I had such high hopes for Belfast, and was keen to watch it after reading the mostly positive reviews... but my goodness, how easily pleased people must be these days!!!
What I watched was a disjointed, poorly scripted, mess of a film with no character development and no depth. It felt rushed despite not actually going anywhere - a bit pointless in my opinion. The music was an overload of Van Morrison songs that didn't even suit the scenes. The whole family (5 of us) were bored after 15-20 minutes but continued to watch in the hope it would get better. It didn't!!!
As a family we love a gritty drama, but this had neither - no grit and no drama!!! It was extremely bland and boring with one mediocre fighting scene. I'm embarrassed to say I chose this film as our "family night" movie - totally wasted everyone's time, and I probably won't be allowed to pick another family night movie anytime soon, lol.
Not wanting to end this review on a low. The best part of the film for us was "Pa's" 10 second dialogue about not caring if someone was different ("That wee girl can be a practicing Hindu, or a Southern Baptist, or a vegetarian Antichrist......") at which my husband pointed to me: "hey that's you; a vegetarian antichrist" - and we got a quick giggle from it. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to save the movie.
Remember Me (2019)
Remember Me..... not likely!!!
I decided to watch this following a review on here stating it's better than 'The Notebook' (a film that I thoroughly enjoyed). Unfortunately it's not a patch on The Notebook!!! Not even close!!! ......Remember Me was flat and lackluster and just didn't move me at all (and I'm someone who cries at the drop of a hat!!!). I was bored about 20 minutes in but gave it the benefit of the doubt and continued to watch in the hope it would get better. It didn't!!! I totally wasted 1½ hours of my time.
If you want to watch a film that heartily incorporates love, nostalgia and Alzheimer's into its storyline; look no further than The Notebook - visually beautiful, great direction and delivered by good actors. In fact, I wish I had watched that again instead of this copycat nonsense.
