Chithram (1988)
Blockbuster
Chitram is the kind of movie that one can watch numerous times and not get bored. It's considered to be a Malayalam classic. Although it has melodrama, Romance and action, this movie stands out for its Comedy. Lalettans acting is top notch. I want to rate this 8.5.
Ayyappanum Koshiyum (2020)
This Clash of Titans will leave you spell bound
Sachi's last movie is his career best. Ayyappanum Koshiyum would be easily amongst the top 5 Malayalam movies ever made! This was such a compelling watch that after a point I didn't know whom to root for. Prithviraj and Biju Menon are brilliant in their roles. Some of the best fight scneces ever in Indian cinema are in AK. The whole movie was so realistic and so believable. Its as if I was a fly on the wall and watching the tensions between the two protagonists in real time. Oh the songs!! I'm addicted to the songs in this movie. Enjoyed every bit of this amazing film. Thank you Sachi for another master piece. We will miss you.
Varathan (2018)
Best creepy movie ever!
Without any usage of gore, rape scene, nudity etc Varathan manages to creep the hell out of you by solely relying on natural acting and effective Bgm. Never have I seen a movie where I could feel the chills of a character in my bones. I wanted to reach out to Priya and warn her, help her. Fahadh rocks the role of a helpless husband who is a townie and doesn't quite get the vibes of those villagers. Both the leads are given fantastic character arch. Even the villains have been casted perfectly. The last 30 mins is a edge of the seat roller coaster. Absolutely in love with this movie and I whole heartedly recommend it. Oh and Yes, you can watch it with family.
Sufiyum Sujatayum (2020)
Soulless Movie
The word 'Rooh' (Soul) features a lot in this movie. With a poetic Sufi and mute Sujata in main lead as shown in trailers, we expect a soulful movie but this movie is a major disappointment. Its as if the director decided to cash in only on appearances and not on performances. Both Aditi and Dev look great but pretentious in their roles. Even the plot is half baked. A woman, even after years of marriage is stuck in her past and the frustrated husband brings her to India for the ex lover's funeral just so she could get the closure and move on. Thats the movie in one sentence. Aditi had such a meaty role but its a pity she could only serve as eye candy. Ditto for Dev Mohan although Dev did look the part and looked suitable for the role. This is what happens when you rely on appearances and cast an actress who cannot even speak or understand the language of the movie. You get a soulless performance. Jayasurya gets barely 15 mins of screen time but even his presence couldn't save this sinking ship. The song is a hummable and nice and Siddhique is brilliant as always as the father. I give this lullaby of a movie a generous 3.
Ee. Ma. Yau (2018)
Yawnnn
The idea of watching a movie based on funeral itself is depressing but I had to watch it for LJP as I am a fan of his other movies. EMY really didn't live up to its hype. The one funeral scene in Angamaly Diaries was a lot funnier! I wonder if this movie would have been such a success had it not carried LJP name. Sorry, if I offend EMY fans but I found it really boring!!
Thanmathra (2005)
This feels so personal
You know how some movies draw you into them and make you feel like you are a part of them?! While watching the movie I forgot that they are actors enacting scenes. Everything felt so real. Mohanlal is in his best form. You laugh and cry with him. He is so magnetic, so charming and so real. This is more than a movie. This is a slice of life.
Godfather (1991)
Masala Movie at its best
No. Do not even compare it to the Hollywood cult classic. They are chalk and cheese. Malayali Godfather is a Masala film like no other. I'm not a big fan of Masala movies, I cannot tolerate them in fact. But this one has the right amount of ingredients - Comedy, Romance, Action, Melodrama. One of my all time favourite Masala Malayalam movie, its way better than its Hindi remake- Hulchul although the Hindi one is a scene to scene copy.
In Harihar Nagar (1990)
So silly but so funny!
It's one of those movies where you will have a goofy smile on your face throughout. It's silly, goofy, ridiculous but oh so funny! It's not a one time watch. You can watch it over and over again and still enjoy this slapstick comedy. I love it.
Kilukkam (1991)
Highly Overrated
I wonder whether people who are ranking it this high have watched it recently or are ranking it simply based on nostalgia factor. Overacting, your nickname is Revathy. She was so over the top!! Other than one or two comic scenes, this movie was unbelievable and boring. I'm giving this a generous 3.
Maheshinte Prathikaaram (2016)
Idukki kalakki
Ever read a Maeve Binchy novel? Her books are never about just the central character but about the towns in Ireland, their people, culture and how all the characters are interwoven seamlessly to one another. MP is more than Mahesh's sweet revenge. It's about Idukki and its people. This is probably not a movie that I'd recommend to a non Malayali as the essence of the movie would be lost to them. This is one of my all time favourite movies of all time. Yes, it's slow paced and the plot is thin but this is a movie that one must savour like an exquisite wine. What a beautiful movie!! I became a fan of Fahadh Faasil after this one.
Sandesham (1991)
Timeless classic
This is an all time favourite movie of most Malayalis. Some scenes tickle your funny bones. In some scenes it's heart wrenching to see the poor father suffer because of his sons who are political rivals but the messaging is so strong and so relevant that you cannot stop admiring this political satire.
Kireedam (1989)
Crowning glory of Malayalam cinema
Beautiful portrayal of father son relationship by the mega stars Lalettan and Thilakan. Its so realistic and so believable that we care for the characters even after the movie climaxes. If I were to narrate the plot to you, you may not like it much. Its the screenplay and natural acting that made the film the blockbuster that it deserves to be. This movie when remade in other languages lost the essence as the heros were shown too heroic and righteous. Original is a masterpiece.
Kappela (2020)
Twisted love story
Malayalam movies are known for their dense plots. With Kappela, the director has spun magic with a thin plot. Don't watch it expecting it to be a thriller. I watched it with no expectations when it released and was smitten - by the performances, the plot and the messaging. Such a brilliantly made movie! Loved every bit of it.
