Today, Tom Selleck is among the most celebrated and renowned TV stars in the world, and for the past 14 years, he’s been mostly acting in Blue Bloods. The actor’s real breakthrough, meanwhile, happened almost 45 years ago, back in 1980! That’s when the pilot episode of Selleck’s Magnum P.I. premiered and the audience immediately fell in love with his charming detective.
But during these 45 years, Tom Selleck has been exclusively referring to his iconic series as “Magnum” instead of “Magnum, P.I.” — and few people know why.
Tom Selleck’s Vow Is Rooted in His Principles
The obvious reason for Selleck’s disregard for his legendary show’s official title would be his aesthetic preference or an internal joke of sorts, but the actor’s vow had nothing to do with those things. Having lived in Hawaii for a while before starting the series, Selleck knew more about the local customs than the showrunners.

Tom Selleck played Police Commissioner Frank Reagan for 275 episodes of Blue Bloods over 14 seasons. He was one of the highest-paid actors in the series, but his recent comments about his potential financial woes after the end of the series raise several eyebrows. Selleck wants CBS to reconsider its decision to cancel the police procedural drama. However, an insider shared that the network wasn’t buying the actor’s financial situation.

Tom Selleck’s time on Blue Bloods is coming to an end. That means the actor, 79, will have to say goodbye to the hefty paychecks he’s received for playing top cop Frank Reagan on the CBS drama.
Selleck has made it clear that he isn’t ready to retire and thinks the network should reconsider its decision to cancel Blue Bloods. But insiders say he should quit griping, considering that he’s likely made millions over the show’s 14-year run.
Tom Selleck earned an estimated $200,000 per episode for ‘Blue Bloods’
Tom Selleck’s exact Blue Bloods salary isn’t known. But it’s safe to say it’s not chump change. Back in 2016, Variety estimated that he earned $200,000 per episode, which works out to $4.4 million per 22-episode season. Over 14 seasons, that adds up to total earnings in the tens of millions.

Blue Bloods Season 14 spring finale has arrived, marking the halfway point for the final season of the hit CBS show.
However, Tom Selleck, who plays Frank Reagan isn’t giving up hope that Blue Bloods will continue past this season.
CBS announced in November that Blue Bloods would end after Season 14, airing in two parts.
The cast has been more than vocal about wanting to keep the show going, especially Donnie Wahlberg.
Despite reports that CBS has confirmed Blue Bloods won’t get a lifeline like S.W.A.T. did, Tom isn’t convinced.
The talented actor had a lot to say about the show he’s called home since 2010.

In Tom Selleck’s recently released memoir, You Never Know (via Business Insider), he reveals how he gave the crew of Magnum P.I. bonuses of $1000 after the studio refused.
Tom Selleck was in the process of renegotiating his contract with CBS for what would be the eighth and final season of Magnum P.I. The studio had decreased the budget of the series, but Selleck wanted them to agree to an eight-day schedule as well as a bonus for the crew if they were able to deliver under budget. “The studio said yes to the eight days. But they responded that they could not under any circumstances talk about crew bonuses, that it would set a dangerous precedent,” Selleck said. “They always invoked precedent when you had an original thought beyond their contractual boilerplate. Honestly, that pissed me off.“

Tom Selleck writes in his new memoir “You Never Know” (via Business Insider) that he personally gave the crew of “Magnum P.I.” bonuses for $1,000 when the studio refused to during contract negotiations for the CBS series’ eighth and final season. Selleck headlined “Magnum P.I.” in the title role for 162 episodes between 1980 and 1988, becoming one of the decade’s most iconic television stars. The actor admits in his memoir that he debated whether or not to continue the show for an eighth run because “I didn’t want anyone to think that last season was just a ploy to get more money.”
During contract negotiations, Selleck writes that he asked the studio to give the crew $1,000 bonuses as long as “Magnum P.I.” Season 8 came in under budget and on time. According to Selleck, the studio “responded that they could not under any circumstances talk about crew bonuses, that it would set a dangerous precedent.

The year was 1973; George Lucas had just finished writing the screenplay for what would be his hit coming-of-age story American Graffiti. A poster on a wall caught his eye, an image of a dream of the old serialized films he enjoyed as a child. Films such as Buck Rogers, Zorro’s Fighting Legion and Spy Smasher flashed through his brain as he had the idea of bringing that type of B-level hero to the big screen. He would take this idea and flesh out a story of a college professor who moonlit as an archeologist adventurer. Little did he know that simple idea would yield one of the greatest and most enduring franchises in movie history as his character Indiana Jones has gone on to appear in five feature films over the course of 42 years that have grossed nearly $2 billion at the worldwide box office. For many, any time the character graces the screen,...

CBS is shutting down one of its NCIS field offices.
The network has canceled NCIS: Hawai’i after three seasons. The show’s season — and now series — finale is set to air on May 6.
The series, which stars Vanessa Lachey and added former NCIS: Los Angeles star LL Cool J to its cast this season, will likely end up as the most watched show to be canceled this season — topping two other canceled CBS shows, CSI: Vegas and So Help Me Todd. NCIS: Hawai’i is averaging about 7.8 million viewers in Nielsen’s seven-day linear ratings this season, and it hits 10 million viewers over 35 days of cross-platform viewing.
Those numbers would make for easy renewals most anyplace else, but they put NCIS: Hawai’i only in the middle of the pack at CBS. The network will also introduce a new NCIS series in the 2024-25 season, a prequel subtitled Origins that follows a...

On September 15, 1965, Irwin Allen whisked television viewers out of their living rooms on a journey to the outer reaches of space, where the Robinson family finds themselves marooned on a strange, not-entirely-hospitable planet thanks to the sabotage of their chief medical officer. For a nation dreaming of a seemingly impossible moon landing, "Lost in Space" was both wish fulfillment and cautionary tale; a part of us was enthralled by the notion of exploring the cosmos, but we were also terrified by the thought of aimlessly hurtling through a universe with no known end and no direction home.
Allen's series didn't dwell much on the more frightening aspects of the Robinsons' predicament. Unlike Gene Roddenberry's "Star Trek" (which would debut a year later), Allen employed a fairly rigid formula that found the Robinsons and the hunky Major Don West (Mark Goddard) having to outwit the generally inept scheming of Dr.

There will be no leap to season three for NBC’s Quantum Leap.
The network has canceled the reboot of the 1989 series after a two-season run, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
The series starring Raymond Lee wrapped its sophomore season in February and ranked as one of the broadcast network’s lowest-rated scripted originals.
Quantum Leap, which was produced in-house at Universal Television, earned a speedy season two renewal as NBC kept production going in a bid to have scripted originals during the writers and actors strikes.
The follow-up to the original series hailed from Martin Gero and Dean Georgaris, who exec-produced alongside Deborah Pratt, Chris Grismer and Alex Berger. Steven Lilien and Bryan Wynbrandt developed the series and served as showrunners on the update.

The Story: It is the future (like say – 1989). Robots are now commonplace, being used for everything from manual labor to childcare. But, robots go bad and when they do, the LAPD calls in Sgt. Jack R. Ramsay (Tom Selleck), an expert in so-called “Runaways”. When a madman (Gene Simmons) invents a microchip that turns all robots into runaways, Ramsay, and his new partner (Cynthia Rhodes) must put a stop to his evil plan – the fate of the world just may depend on it! Oh, and also Ramsay is afraid of heights. Trust me, that’s important.
The Players: Starring: Tom Selleck, Cynthia Rhodes, Kirstie Alley, G. W. Bailey and Gene Simmons. Written and directed by Michael Crichton.
The History: While most famous for his novels, Michael Crichton actually had a decent Hollywood career as a director, having a couple of solid hits under his belt by the time 1984 rolled around.

NCIS has been part of the television landscape for the past two decades.
Following a two-episode backdoor pilot on Jag in 2003, the redundantly named Navy NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service debuted in the fall of that year.
Although it started slowly ratings-wise in its first couple of seasons, a franchise soon was born.
Now in its 21st season, NCIS has produced more than 450 episodes and six spinoff series, a record unmatched in TV history (although Law & Order fans doubtless will quibble).
Maybe now, shortly after the series said goodbye to its second-most popular character on NCIS Season 21 Episode 2, would be a good time for a hiatus.
That's insane, you say, what with two new spinoffs in the pipeline.
Look back fondly
Let's start with the fact that every day, on cable and streaming, fans can watch their favorite episodes from the golden years of NCIS, back before Abby, Tony, Ziva,...

Before his iconic role as the protagonist in Blue Bloods, Tom Selleck was the titular central lead in the cult 80s crime drama Magnum P.I. The veteran star’s portrayal of a freelancing private investigator made his one of the biggest superstars on television for 8 seasons of the show.

When Selleck was expectedly called back for a reboot of the show in 2018, the Three Men and a Baby star declined the offer categorically. The dystopian sci-fi film "Logan's Run" is set in a supposedly idyllic future society where residents above 30 mysteriously disappear. The hedonistic metropolis is enclosed by a dome, and those who choose to explore the world outside — and the secrets that it holds — are labeled "runners." Michael York stars in the film as the titular protagonist, an undercover police officer who infiltrates the runners only to find that he, too, opposes the laws that he once worked to uphold and helps them lead an uprising.
"Logan's Run" was nominated for its cinematography and set decoration in the 1977 Academy Awards. It even received a special achievement award for its visual effects. The futuristic set and costume design were almost identical to the smash-hit sci-fi adventure film "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope," which was released the following year. It's possible that "Star Wars" even drew inspiration from the 1976 film. However,...

When beloved actor Matthew Perry passed away last October, the tributes from fans and collaborators poured in. Most of us anticipated the thoughts from his Friends co-stars, who made joint statements prior to individual ones. Now, Tom Selleck, who played Monica Gellar’s one-time love interest Richard Burke on the sitcom, is recalling his time working alongside Perry.
Speaking with USA Today, Tom Selleck remembered one moment where his character swapped mannerisms with Matthew Perry’s Chandler Bing, but the Blue Bloods actor had difficulty nailing Chandler’s trademark sarcasm. “Matthew had this speech pattern that I hadn’t been aware of…Matt told me, ‘It’s a joke, Tom.’ It’s the way he says it. But during that whole show, I kept going up to him asking, ‘Can you say it again?’ and he’d do the line. That was his signature.” On Perry’s skills overall, Selleck concluded,...

There are loads of tantalizing Hollywood casting what-ifs. Tom Selleck would've played Indiana Jones had he not been previously committed to CBS' "Magnum P.I." Pierce Brosnan was set to succeed Roger Moore as James Bond after "A View to a Kill," but NBC, realizing the star of their just-canceled "Remington Steele," was a hot commodity, resurrected the show for a fifth season (after which it was canceled again). And there's always poor Dougray Scott, who had to give up the role of Wolverine in Bryan Singer's "X-Men" when "Mission: Impossible II" went over schedule.
These were franchise- and career-altering decisions. What would Harrison Ford have done after the conclusion of the "Star Wars" original trilogy in 1983? Would Brosnan have rejuvenated the flagging Bond series, thus averting the six-year retooling period between "License to Kill" and "GoldenEye?" Could Scott have connected with audiences as emphatically as Hugh Jackman did in the role of Logan?...

Tom Selleck recently told USA Today that he relied on Matthew Perry for line readings during the filming of one “Friends” episode during the NBC sitcom’s second season. The “Magnum P.I.” favorite was a recurring guest star on “Friends” as Richard Burke, an ophthalmologist who becomes Monica’s older love interest despite being friends with her parents. In one episode, Richard tries to act younger by using Chander (Perry) and Joey (Matt LeBlanc) as examples.
“We had this role reversal thing going, where [Richard] tried to be like them, and them like me,” Selleck said, remembering that he had difficulty nailing the way Perry would make jokes fly with his trademark sarcastic line readings.
One bit of dialogue that was tripping Selleck up was a line about Richard’s football skills delivered with the sarcasm of Chandler. The line read as followed: “Could that shot be any prettier?”

Fox is developing a one-hour drama titled “Borrowed Time,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The series hails from writers and executive producers David Slack, Josh Campbell, and Matt Stuecken. McG is also an executive producer along with Mary Viola and Corey Marsh via Wonderland Sound and Vision. Wonderland is currently under a non-exclusive broadcast direct development deal with Fox.
The official logline for “Borrowed Time” states: “Neuroscientist Mimi Peters is working to extract memories from the human brain. Her technology is too dangerous to test on the living. But after she proves she can peer into the minds of the dead, FBI Agent Casey Harden comes calling. Together, they form an uneasy partnership using her technology to solve his cases.”

The arc of the "Star Trek" films released from 2009 to 2016 is an odd one. In 2009, J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" rebooted the film series in a new timeline, depicting a brand new cast of younger actors playing the "Star Trek" characters we all knew and loved but altered thanks to a causality/time travel conceit. That film was a massive hit, repurposing "Star Trek" into a slick, sexy action franchise. Long gone were the days of philosophical intellectualizing and tales of diplomacy. Thousands of nerdy conversations immediately began as to what constituted the "real" version of "Star Trek" and what didn't.
Abrams followed his film in 2012 with "Star Trek Into Darkness," a film that repurposed the character of Khan (Benedict Cumberbatch) previously seen in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." That film was also a hit but is generally not as liked as the 2009 film.

We generally prefer to focus on positive things at the start of a new year, but the fact is that every good show must come to an end, and we're about to say goodbye to some truly beloved series in 2024. We've already lost so many shows recently, including NCIS: Los Angeles and Magnum P.I.
But here we are to discuss it some more! Some of the shows on this list are going out on their own terms after long, successful runs. Others are being unceremoniously kicked to the curb due to low ratings, massive budgets, or departing stars.
One thing they all have in common? Their loss will really sting.
But one they all have in common is that they're shuffling off the airwaves sometime within the next 12 months, so join us as we bid farewell to the following series from across the TV landscape.

The sirens you hear on social media are the sounds of diehard Station 19 fans sounding the alarm over the cancellation of the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff.
The loud signal boosting ahead of what will be the seventh and final season of the firefighter drama comes after ABC on Dec. 8 announced that Station 19 will conclude with 10 episodes this year — the show’s shortest order since it debuted — like Grey’s — as a midseason replacement show when it launched in spring 2018.
With Station 19 and Grey’s serving as the only remaining shows on ABC produced by hitmaker Shonda Rhimes — who is now based exclusively at Netflix — why would the network ax one of its Thursday staples? The answer can be found in the math.
Station 19, which started off as a backdoor pilot in season 14 of Grey’s, finished the 2022-23 broadcast season as the No. 13 drama among the advertiser-coveted...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for the Magnum P.I. series finale.] Magnum P.I. could very well be over for good, but given that NBC picked it up for 20 more episodes following CBS‘ cancellation, it’s not out of the realm of possibility to consider it could come back. In fact, Jay Hernandez (who plays Thomas Magnum) shared on X the day before the series finale aired, “I actually floated the idea of a standalone film. I suppose it’s still possible. If I’m being totally honest I didn’t love the show ending how it did.” The final episode did leave a few things hanging, including the future for Magnum and Higgins (Perdita Weeks). She’d found an engagement ring earlier in the finale, though it turned out to be Magnum was just holding onto it for Rick (Zachary Knighton). That did lead to the couple discussing marriage, however, after she couldn’t stop thinking...

As noted in the first of these two final episodes, "aloha" is a Hawaiian word meaning hello and goodbye.
So what feeling did the aloha from Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 19 and Magnum P.I. Season 5 Episode 20 give off?
Sadly, it was the latter, as Magnum and company said goodbye to their loyal viewers after five seasons.
And yet viewers' hope for another revival still floated in the Honolulu air.
Magnum P.I., debuting in 2018, was the last of Peter M. Lenkov's trilogy of reboot series, following the powerful Hawaii Five-0 in 2010 (which aired for a decade) and the less successful McGyver in 2016 (which ran for five seasons).
Magnum faced a stricter path right from the start. I mean, Magnum without the iconic mustache? What were they thinking?
But now, five seasons later, it's impossible to conceive of a bushy 'stache covering up any of Jay Hernandez's handsome face.

Hey, "Magnum P.I." fans. We hope you guys totally enjoyed episodes 19 and 20 tonight, especially since they were indeed the very last episodes of Magnum Pi's current season 5, and unfortunately, we've gotten official word that NBC did in fact cancel Magnum Pi. So, season 5 is also the final season unless it somehow gets saved again by another network. According to the folks over at Screenrant.com , NBC made the official announcement to cancel Magnum Pi way back in June of 2023. Screenrant gave some possible reasons for the cancellation. Apparently, the cast's contracts were up for negotiation for a new season 6. So, NBC had to either extend the cast's contracts, order more episodes, or just cancel the show. At the time, there was a lot of uncertainty because of the writers strike, which had been going on for a full month and a half. So, NBC felt their best option was to just cancel the show.

Broadcast pilot season was already mostly dead when the Hollywood strikes came along. But to paraphrase Billy Crystal in “The Princess Bride,” “There’s a big difference between ‘mostly dead’ and ‘all dead.’ Mostly dead is slightly alive!”

Compare that to pre-pandemic times, when it was a shock that the broadcast networks ordered just 60 pilots in early 2020.
But sales are still happening,...
