Parasite director Bong Joon-ho has addressed the widely-published report that claimed he was in a dispute with Warner Bros over Mickey 17.
Bong Joon-ho has publicly addressed the claim that emerged earlier this month that he didn’t have final cut privilege on his upcoming sci-fi film, Mickey 17. When this report first emerged (via Daniel Richtman) it was baffling yet also acted as an explanation of sorts for a series of events that has been, frankly, rather bizarre.
Richtman claimed that Bong ‘doesn’t have final cut written into his contract with the studio. In other words, if Warner Bros doesn’t like aspects of his film, then it can insist on making changes.’
And as the story went, Warner Bros didn’t like aspects of his film and was insisting on said changes. Richtman also claimed that this ‘dispute’ was a major reason for the film’s huge delay.

According to industry insider reports, Warner Bros. is purposefully dumping its highly anticipated Bong Joon-ho project, Mickey 17. Earlier this year, reports emerged that the film was delayed to January 2025 in favor of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. However, the new reports tell a different story; that of a creative difference between Bong and the studio.

It almost appears that WB is making the same mistake again that it did with Zack Snyder’s Dceu film Justice League. The studio interference led to several changes in the film and fans absolutely hated the film. The whole ruckus caused WB to release the Snyder cut of the film.

South Korean Bong Joon-ho swept the global cinema scene with his hit film Parasite, becoming the first non-English-language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture, alongside winning Best International Picture. Bong’s career has been on the rise since then, and he was hired by Warner Bros. to write and direct an adaptation of Edward Ashton’s novel Mickey7. The movie is going to be titled Mickey 17, and it was originally scheduled for a March 29, 2024 release, which was pushed back to January 28, 2025, supposedly due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike and delays in post-production, but that might not be the real reason.
The scoop we have for you is still a rumor, but it comes from our trusted industry insider Daniel Richtman (@DanielRPK), who is known for his accurate predictions and insider reveals. Daniel has recently explained that there might be a more complex reason for the film’s delay,...

At one time, Warner Bros. was planning to give director Bong Joon-ho’s sci-fi thriller Mickey 17 a theatrical release on March 29th, 2024 – but then they bounced the movie to January of 2025 and released Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire on March 29th instead. Why the delay? According to industry scooper Daniel Richtman, it’s rumored that Joon-ho and Warner Bros. are at odds over the director’s cut. Richtman wrote, “I hear Mickey 17 is delayed because Warner Bros. won’t let Bong Joon-ho release his director’s cut. They want to release a more ‘accessible’ version.”
This may not be surprising for CinemaCon attendees to hear. A trailer for Mickey 17 was shown at Cinema Con earlier this year (we have the report Here) and some who saw the footage felt that the movie “could either be totally amazing or a complete disaster.”

Incredibly, Parasite director Bong Joon-ho doesn’t appear to have final cut on his latest film, Mickey 17. A new report says it’s delayed due to a dispute with Warners.
In an alternate reality, we’d already be watching Parasite director Bong Joon-ho’s latest film by now. Originally due for release in cinemas this March, sci-fi thriller Mickey 17 was instead shunted to January 2025.
Assorted reasons were proposed for the move – one was that Warner Bros wanted to avoid competing with the release of Dune: Part Two. According to reporter Daniel Richtman, however, there’s a darker reason for the delay.
According to his sources (news of which comes to us via World of Reel), Bong doesn’t have final cut written into his contract with the studio. In other words, if Warner Bros doesn’t like aspects of his film, then it can insist on making changes.

Twenty years after launching her Institute on Gender in Media — which created a blueprint for gathering data about inclusion and diversity on- and offscreen — Geena Davis is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Arkansas’ Bentonville Film Festival, which she runs alongside fest director Wendy Guerrero. Here, the Oscar-winning actor shares her proudest moments from Bff (the June 10-16 event is expected to attract 65,000 attendees this year), the meaningfulness of a Dei-centered fest in a tumultuous election year and what most informs her “inherently not controversial” belief that storytelling should be for everyone.
How does it feel to see Bff reach this milestone?
We truly can’t believe 10 years have already gone by. When we launched, Bentonville didn’t even have a movie theater. (Laughs.) And now the town is booming — art, culture, restaurants and museums. It’s been amazing to see.

Neon has dated their fifth Cannes Palme D’Or winner Anora for Oct. 18 per Comscore in what will be a limited release.
October is the traditional launch pad for Neon with their Palme D’Or winning fare including 2019’s ultimate Oscar Best Picture winner Parasite (Oct. 11), 2021’s Titane (Oct 1), 2022’s Triangle of Sadness (Oct. 7), and last year’s Oscar winner Anatomy of a Fall (Oct. 13). Of the five, and granted it was pre-pandemic, Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite did the best at the domestic B.O. with $53.3M, arguably the fourth highest grossing foreign language (and foreign produced) movie stateside after Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Life Is Beautiful and Zhang Yimou’s Hero.
Anora follows a high class stripper from Brooklyn, played by Better Things‘ Mikey Madison, who falls in love and soon marries a Russian oligarch’s son. The family has problems with her and complications ensue. Some critics have...

“Anora,” Sean Baker’s comic look at an exotic dancer and sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, will hit theaters next fall. The film will open in limited release on Oct. 18 from Neon.

Filmmaking as an art can be as extensive and taxing as it can be intricate, and Bong Joon-ho’s meteoric success, Parasite, is no exception. From charting the storyline and compiling the script to interviewing locals around Seoul and consolidating everything into a screenplay, no stone was left unturned for the 2019 dark comedy and thriller.
Amongst the movie crew resided Bong’s trusted comrade Han Jin Won, who would soon end up as the film’s screenwriter, toiling away for hours every day for an impeccable execution of the screenplay.

The popularity of K-dramas continues to run wild in the English-speaking world.

In an interview with Deadline, Kocowa CEO Park Kun-hee said that English-speaking usage is already booming as the streamer’s top international segment. No one really expected this year’s Cannes Film Festival to replicate the stellar showing of last year at the Oscars, when official selections Killers of the Flower Moon, Anatomy of a Fall, and The Zone of Interest took an unprecedented three of the 10 Best Picture nominations and a total of 20 noms and three wins among them. How many times can the French catch lightning in a bottle like that achievement? Who thought 2019 could be equaled or topped, when Parasite became the first Palme d’Or winner to take the Best Picture Oscar since Marty did it in 1955 and where Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (also an official selection that year) went on to 10 Oscar nominations and two wins?

Cannes awards have become hugely influential in subsequent awards races, especially the Oscars. The top honor, the Palme d’Or, confers prestige and a stamp of approval — this year from the Competition jury led by multi hyphenate Greta Gerwig — that awards voters take seriously.

It has been 45 years since the first Mad Max dropped, and thanks to George Miller, the franchise is still going strong. With Furiosa earning rave early reviews, which serves as a prequel to the last Mad Max entry Fury Road, the Aussie filmmaker opened up about the evolution of technology over the course of the franchise.
From using celluloid analog back in the day to craft The Road Warrior to shifting to digital for the modern installments in the series, there has been a huge leap in technology over the years. And for Furiosa, Miller opened up about getting inspired by Oscar-winner Bong Joon-ho’s technique.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival was officially closed yesterday, May 25, 2024, as the prizes for the movies and the actors were awarded at the closing ceremony. It was a very exciting and content-filled event, and we have also reported on numerous movies that had their premiere at Cannes, some of which were received well, while others… not so much. But, of course, what everyone wants to know is who won the Palme d’Or, the most important award at Cannes, and we can finally confirm that Neon’s film Anora won the award for the best in-competition movie shown at the festival.
Several interesting facts can be said about this movie and its victory, so we are going to discuss them in the upcoming paragraphs, while here – we can only congratulate Anora and all the people involved with the project on a major success.

Sean Baker’s “Anora” has won the Palme d’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, a jury headed by Greta Gerwig announced on Saturday.
The win for Baker’s freewheeling film about a stripper and the son of a Russian oligarch becomes the fifth consecutive Palme winner to be distributed by Neon, which previously handled “Anatomy of a Fall,” “The Triangle of Sadness,” “Titane” and “Parasite.”
TheWrap’s review said of the film, “It’s one of the most entertaining movies to play in Cannes this year, and also one of the most confounding: part character study of the title character (Mikey Madison), a sex worker from Brighton Beach who falls for rich Russian playboy Ivan (Mark Eydelshteyn); part look into the world of the super-rich, an arena Baker has studiously avoided in films like ‘Tangerine,’ ‘The Florida Project’ and ‘Red Rocket’; part escalating nightmare comedy reminiscent of ’80s gems...

The Cannes Film Festival is nearing its conclusion, with plenty of films making a splash on the starry Croisette on the French Riviera. However, one studio executive tells Variety, “There aren’t many Oscar-buzzy titles to be excited about, not even in the international feature space.”
This year’s main competition jury, led by president Greta Gerwig and including J.A. Bayona, Ebru Ceylan, Pierfrancesco Favino, Lily Gladstone, Eva Green, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Nadine Labaki and Omar Sy, will name its winners on Saturday.
It was looking like a foregone conclusion that the Palme d’Or win would be bestowed upon Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical “Emilia Pérez,” starring Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Karla Sofía Gascón, which was picked up by Netflix. However, on Friday, Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” garnered the most enthusiastic reactions on social media from attendees and the longest-standing ovation at 12 minutes. Mohammad Rasoulof’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” has a lot going for it on the way to a potential Palme d’Or win: strong reviews, an anguished political call-out against Iranian oppression, and Rasoulof’s own status as an exile who just fled his home country and was finally able to attend Cannes after all. (Read our interview with the director here.)
On the steps of the Palais for Friday’s premiere, Rasoulof held up photos of two of the actors — Misagh Zare and Soheila Golestani – banned from leaving Iran to attend the festival. He’s already shared how the Islamic Republic has been pressuring his crew into convincing Cannes to drop the film, which charts the breakdown of a family after a Revolutionary Court judge’s gun goes missing, from its lineup. This is Rasoulof’s first time in competition. He previously won prizes in Un Certain...

You only have to take a quick look at a ranking of the Palme d’Or winners to recognize that the winners circle for the prize represents some of cinema’s greatest accomplishments. “Taxi Driver,” “Apocalypse Now,” “Parasite,” “Paris, Texas,” “The Leopard,” and many more masterpieces were correctly bestowed Cannes’ highest honor, and the swaths of great films to receive the Palme since the festival’s beginning in 1946 have given the prize a prestige that arguably surpasses the Oscar or more widely recognizable trophies.
But the quality of any film is a subjective matter, and every Palme d’Or is ultimately decided not by an exact science, but by a small jury handpicked every year to judge the titles in the festival’s main competition. So, for all the great movies in the Palme pantheon, there are plenty that haven’t aged well in the decades since, or those that...

Everywhere on social media, you read comments from readers lamenting our modern culture.
They long for the good old days when comedy was offensive, antiheroes said whatever they were thinking, and actors were judged by their undeniable talent rather than the biggest mistakes of their careers.
Plotlines were more important than representation. Complicated characters were more important than "Wokeness."
Back then, they say, it didn't matter if a character was black or gay. All that mattered was the story.
We watched because a filmmaker had something important to say, not because every race and sexual orientation appeared and was treated with respect.
We listened because regardless of what anyone said about a comedian, at least he was funny!
Unsurprisingly, many of the same social critics would also say no movies from the 2010-2030 era will be remembered as classics 20 or 30 years from now.

The last decade has seen the success of Asian titles conquering not only the hearts of millions of viewers around the world, but also the streaming charts and international awards. These include such impeccable thrillers as Burning (2018), Parasite (2019) and Decision to Leave (2022), with all of them making noise at the Cannes Film Festival.
Despite the fact that most of the acclaimed Asian thrillers are South Korean, last year’s movie broke this Cannes’ tendency, as it was created by the Japanese filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-eda. His recent work is now climbing Netflix’s chart, and here’s why.
Its plot revolves around a mother who notices her son behaving strangely: all of a sudden, he cuts his hair or comes home with only one shoe on. Then she decides to meet his teacher, assuming he’s responsible for it, however, as they confront and as the story gradually unfolds through their eyes,...

Sean Baker’s “Anora,” a hilarious yet touching drama in which a sex worker falls in love with the son of a Russian oligarch, energized Cannes Film Festival with a 7.5-minute standing ovation on Tuesday.
As the crowd applauded, the indie maverick director and Cannes darling said into the microphone, “Thank you to the Cannes Film Festival for making dreams come true … And also thank you to all of you for coming out and seeing our film on the best screen in the world. Long live cinema!”
The ovation wasn’t the only chance for applause — the audience erupted into cheers numerous times during the two-hour film, including on several occasions during one wild scene in which the oligarch’s associates raid his son’s mansion.
In the film, Mikey Madison plays Anora, a 23-year-old working at a strip club outside of New York City. Her luck changes when she...

Neon has grabbed North American rights to The Seed of the Sacred Fig, the latest film from Iranian filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof.
The thriller is set to debut in competition in Cannes on May 24 and marks Rasoulof’s first return to Cannes after being barred from traveling to serve on last year’s Un Certain Regard jury by Iranian officials. The film stars Setareh Abdolmaleki, Zahra Rostami, Amineh Mazroei Arani, and Niousha AkhshiVardoogh. Neon has said it is planning a North American theatrical release in 2024.
The Seed of the Sacred Fig follows Iman, an investigating judge in the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, who grapples with mistrust and paranoia as nationwide political protests intensify and his gun mysteriously disappears. Suspecting the involvement of his wife Najmeh and his daughters Rezvan and Sana, he imposes drastic measures at home, causing tensions to rise. Step by step,...

Yorgos Lanthimos can’t stop (won’t stop!) working with Oscar winner Emma Stone, casting the actress once again as leading lady for his next project “Bugonia.”
The drama will also star Jesse Plemons who, along with Stone, appears in Lanthimos’ forthcoming “Kinds of Kindness.” That three-chapter feature just premiered on Friday at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
“Bugonia” follows two conspiracy-obsessed young men who kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. The script is from heat-seeking “Succession” and “The Menu” writer Will Tracy.
Focus Features has won domestic rights to distribute the project. Universal Pictures will roll out the film in global territories, save Korea where “Parasite” producer Cj Enm will release. The latter is financing the film with Fremantle. CAA Media Finance and WME Independent brokered the rights deal.
This package is loaded with pedigree.

One of the pleasures of the Cannes Film Festival is seeing what films and what directors break out. Sure, in the current crop of films premiering at the 77th festival this May, there are some big names everybody knows; you don’t need an explainer to know that Francis Ford Coppola and “Megalopolis” are a big deal. But Cannes is also where filmmakers such as Julia Ducournau and Justine Triet gained wide exposure and became international known quantities, thanks to the prestige granted by nabbing the festival’s top prize, the Palme d’Or.
Introduced a full decade into the festival’s existence, the Palme d’Or has a strong pedigree associated with it; several of the films that received the prize — “La Dolce Vita,” “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,” “Taxi Driver,” “Paris, Texas,” “Pulp Fiction,” “The Tree of Life,” “Parasite,” and way too many others to properly list — have claim...

What to expect from Cannes 2024? The global selection offers critics plenty to write about — after all, this is the festival d’auteurs. But this year’s edition may be light on the red carpet glitz that lures celebrities to the Côte d’Azur for eye-popping photo memes and offshore yacht revels. Remember Madonna’s 1991 pointy Gaultier bustier? Elizabeth Taylor holding her white dog as “Cliffhanger” star Sylvester Stallone climbed the steps to meet her at the top? Such viral moments are what Cannes director Thierry Fremaux dreams of.
High-octane stars expected to hit the Palais photo gauntlet include two-time Oscar-winner Emma Stone, who stars in all three stories in competition title “Kinds of Kindness” (Searchlight), Yorgos Lanthimos’ edgy follow-up to $100-million grosser “Poor Things.” Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth will add some sizzle for out-of-competition prequel “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” (Warner Bros.), George Miller’s rollercoaster return after 2015’s Oscar-winning “Mad Max: Fury Road.

If you think the housing crisis is bad in the UK and US, you should check out Seoul, where 6% of households are unable to find accommodation at all and others are paying through the nose for tiny jjokbangs, or ‘piece rooms’ – illegal partitions within other people’s homes or business premises, often with no cooking facilities or basic sanitation. Several films have already been made about this, from Jeon Go-woon’s coruscating drama Microhabitat to Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar-winning black comedy Parasite. Yoon Eun-kyung’s début work, which screened as part of Fantaspoa 2024, is something a little more out of left field.

It's no secret that the South Korean TV industry is conquering the world step by step. But there's no wonder why K-dramas are so popular. Showrunners have put a lot of thought and effort into creating a series of different genres that can be enjoyed by different audiences.
However, not only shows are getting more and more attention, but also full-length movies. Especially after the huge success of the movie Parasite. The 99%-rated movie even won the Oscar for Best Picture.
So here are some more movies you should definitely check out if you liked Bong Joon-ho's masterpiece.
1. Love and Leashes (2022)
Rotten Tomatoes: 89%
There are some topics that are not often explored in movies, and Bdsm is one of them, although it has become a bit more common in recent years. Well, Love and Lashes is actually a romantic comedy that explores the kink in the sweetest and absolutely not cringeworthy way.

Chicago – Opening Night at the 2024 Chicago Critics Film Festival (Ccff) on May 3rd will include the last film of popular South Korean (Sk) Actor Lee Sun-kyun, entitled “Sleep” (click here for tickets) The world was rocked on December 27th, 2023, when the report came through that that actor – who had a prominent role in the 2019 Oscar Best Picture “Parasite’ – had died at age 48 from an apparent suicide in Seoul (Sk), months after his appearance in Chicago during the Asian Pop-Up Cinema.
“Sleep” follows newlyweds Hyun-su (Lee Sun-kyun) and Soo-jin (Jung Yu-mi), whose domestic bliss is disrupted when Hyun-su begins speaking in his sleep, ominously stating, “someone’s inside.” From that night on, whenever he falls asleep, Hyun-su transforms into someone else, with no recollection of what happened the night before. Overwhelmed with anxiety that he may hurt himself or their young family, Soo-jin can barely sleep because of this irrational fear.
