The film as a whole was taken to the Supreme Court in 1952 by distributor Joseph Burstyn, as the segment by Rossellini 'The Miracle' had been banned. The case was won granting freedom of expression to film.
The Renoir segment, filmed in 1936, was not finished editing until 1946 after the producer Braunberger distrusted a budding relationship between actress Sylvia Bataille (his mistress) and the chief camera operator, and shooting was interrupted.
