Hayden Panettiere will reprise her Scream 4 role of Kirby Reed for the next installment in the franchise from Spyglass Media and Paramount Pictures. She’s set to star alongside Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding and Jenna Ortega, who toplined the recent reboot of the franchise from directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (aka Radio Silence).
The next Scream film will pick up with Sam (Barrera), Mindy (Brown), Chad (Gooding) and Tara (Ortega)—four survivors of the most recent batch of Ghostface killings—as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter. Lack of EuropaCorp hit sees number dip below 100m.
The international box office for French films recovered some of its élan in 2017 after a difficult 2016, although the absence of a big hit from Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp meant admissions remained well below the 100m of recent years.
According to preliminary annual figures released by export body UniFrance on Friday evening (January 19) as part of its Rendez-vous with French Cinema in Paris programme, French films drew 80.5m spectators internationally in 2017 for a total box office of €468m ($572m).
The international box office also generated more admissions for French cinema than France, where local pictures sold 78.2m tickets in 2017. Unifrance said the 2017 international box office figure represented a 98% rise on 2016 figures, when French films drew 34m spectators worldwide.
Breaking the box office figure down, majority French productions accounted for 60.7m, or 76%, of these admissions. French-language productions generated 38m entries, accounting for 47% of the international box office.

How to Get Away With Murder is keeping it in the family for season four. E! (This is a Shonda Rhimes production, after all.) That said, it's a pretty safe bet he'll be sharing the screen with his wife in some capacity. Tennon's appearance on Htgawm won't be the first time he's appeared alongside his wife on either stage or screen. They've appeared together in CBS' Laws of Chance, feature films The Architect, Lila & Eve and Custody, as well as...

Last Year’s Winner: Regina King, “American Crime”
Still Eligible: Yes.
Hot Streak: Regina King won two years in a row for her roles in “American Crime.” ABC cancelled the well-reviewed but low-rated anthology series after its third season.
Fun Fact: No one has won more than twice in this category, though Kathy Bates holds the record for most nominations with seven total nods.
Perhaps the most intriguing competition within this category is internal. “Big Little Lies” offers a few options in supporting actresses, primarily Laura Dern and Shailene Woodley. Dern is a five-time nominee (and two-time Oscar nominee) and beloved within the community. (She’s reportedly up for the presidency of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.) Woodley could’ve been positioned as a lead, given her role’s prominence, and that could work for or against her in this category.

It’s funny how time can change your perception on things. Back in 2014, I moderated a post-screening panel for the documentary film and festival favorite, “Food Chains.” Producers Sanjay Rawal (who also directed), Smriti Kasahari, and Eva Longoria were all on hand to discuss how their film documented criminal labor practices in the U.S. food industry. “Food Chains” focused on farmers who hire illegal immigrants and drive them into debt, claiming their hourly wages, production, and general efforts to make an honest living don’t cover the costs of feeding and housing these workers.
Even though the food is slop and the housing just a crate packed with 20 men, no one questions the system because they can’t. There’s nowhere for workers to go and no one they can call for help. They live in fear of being deported or of their bosses — who physically and mentally abuse them,...

“Custody” is the cliched wedding toast of movies. Actually, it’s the drunken cliched wedding toast of movies, in that it starts by defining the title — “the protective care or guardianship of someone or something,” in case you’re unfamiliar with the lofty legal term — before spiraling wildly off-topic, delving full-on into the lives of the wedding guests and often forgetting why these stories are relevant to the happy couple.
In other words, it’s a mess, and if you’re purely interested in Viola Davis’ involvement, I urge you to skip to the first and only paragraph below staring with “Viola Davis” (or the one ending with “our beloved Vi Vi”).
To continue the wedding analogy, the happy couple at the heart of “Custody” is Sara Diaz (Catalina Sandino Moreno) and her kids. A single mother working at a dry cleaner, Diaz is constantly worried about her kids getting into trouble,...

Up to this point, Adam Pally’s career has been built around the exuberant, self-effacing comedian stealing scenes as a favored supporting player. Dating back to his breakout turn as Max in “Happy Endings” and including memorable appearances since then in “The Mindy Project,” “Lady Dynamite,” and “Joshy” (among others), Pally has proven an ideal addition to each of his projects thus far and always leaves you wanting more.

The 2017 Athena Film Festival premiered from February 9th to 12th at Barnard College in New York. The festival, founded on the idea on seeing more female protagonists in films, celebrated its seventh year by showcasing a town hall meeting with multiple female activists. Along with the highly awaited event, the festival also premiered several female-leading movies, including Little Pink House, Girl Unbound, and Dolores. With such a packed schedule, the festival saw a huge turn out despite the large snowstorm that occurred just hours beforehand.
The festival was founded seven years ago by Kathryn Kolbert (from the Athena Center for Leadership Studies at Barnard College) and Melissa Silverstein (the artistic director of Women and Hollywood) with the original idea of seeing more leading ladies in films. That idea has skyrocketed to showcasing not only films with strong female roles, but also honoring screenplays in the festival’s own Black List,...

Back in June, James Franco starred in the remake of the 1996 slasher “Mother, May I Sleep With Danger?” for Lifetime. The film was something that traditional Lifetime movie audiences weren’t used to seeing, but it seemed to have worked out well for Franco and the network.
Now, the ever busy filmmaker is set to star in and executive produce his second Lifetime film, “High School Lover.” Not much is known about the TV movie, only that it will debut February 4. The first image, which you can see above, was also released.

Team Experience is at the Tribeca Film Festival. Here's Manuel on "Custody".
"I wanted to have the film center on female characters." That was James Lapine in a post-screening Q&A of his latest film, Custody, which premiered this past week. And boy has he delivered. Steering pretty far from familiar ground for him (he of Into the Woods and Six by Sondheim fame), Lapine has crafted a mosaic-like portrait of the labyrinthine bureaucracy that are the family court proceedings in New York City. Sara Diaz, a young single mother of two (Catalina Sandino Moreno, putting those wounded eyes to great use), finds herself embroiled in a custody battle when an accident leaves her son with a black eye that forces the school to call child services. Sara is assigned to a freshly minted lawyer, Ally Fisher (Hayden Panettiere, in her most mature role to date) who quickly realizes there's...

In the heightened world that ABC’s Nashville has created over the past four seasons, I’m willing to buy quite a lot.
Country-crossing stadium tours thrown together at a moment’s notice? Sure. An A-list singer in huge sunglasses stalking her estranged husband from her mobility scooter at a public festival? Why not? Heck, I’ll even go along with the notion that Music City has a rabid pack of paparazzi ready to pop flashbulbs at the slightest whiff of controversy.
But I swear, by the price tag fluttering from Minnie Pearl’s sunhat, I cannot accept that Maddie — Maddie!

A fine cast, including Hayden Panettiere, animates this deeply wrought film about the lives of three strangers that intersect in a New York family court
The courtroom drama Custody opens rather clumsily, with writer/director James Lapine choosing to spell out his title to the audience, as if worried they’re somehow unaware of its meaning.
“Cus·to·dy: the protective care or guardianship of someone or something,” reads a title card. You don’t say.

Viola Davis was safe from Jared Leto's Suicide Squad shenanigans. The How to Get Away With Murder star tells E! News that she was not on the receiving end of the gifts that the Oscar winner sent to their Suicide co-stars. And that's a very good thing. "I did not receive any personally or else I would have got my husband who was called the headache ball back in the day when he played football," Davis said at last night's premiere of her new indie Custody at the Tribeca Film Festival. "I would have said, 'Take care of The Joker." Just last week, Leto told me he sent his cast mates used condoms and anal beads. "I did a lot of things to create a dynamic to...

The writer-director of the legal drama “Custody,” James Lapine, is best known for his work in the theater, particularly for his direction of Stephen Sondheim musicals like “Sunday in the Park with George” and “Into the Woods.” He has worked sparingly for the movies, though he did direct the charming 1991 film “Impromptu,” where Judy Davis gave a memorably stylized performance as free-spirited novelist George Sand. Lapine works well with actors, and he has placed at the center of “Custody” one of the finest we have, Viola Davis, who plays Martha Schulman, a judge navigating a difficult court case and...
