Whenever a Sony movie comes in at No. 1, Tom Rothman drives his 1967 Ford Mustang to the Culver City lot and leaves it parked in front of the Thalberg building. But on Monday, there was a hitch after Bad Boys: Ride or Die opened to a victorious $56.5 million at the domestic box office: the red beauty wouldn’t start.

It was not the summer box office start that many (myself included) were hoping for. Universal's "The Fall Guy" debuted with just $27.7 million domestically despite earning very good reviews, making for the worst start to the summer movie season in decades. But hope emerged in the form of one of cinema's most cherished franchises as "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" returned to theaters in honor of its 25th anniversary. An old hope, if you will. This once-maligned prequel to George Lucas' beloved sci-fi series helped make up the difference and made its way into the history books. Again.
"The Phantom Menace" re-release brought in $8.7 million domestically over the weekend, which was good enough to land at number two on the charts behind "Fall Guy" and ahead of the previous week's champion "Challengers" ($7.5 million). Internationally, "Episode I" added an additional $6.4 million for a global re-opening of $15.1 million. That's quite a...

“Wonka” (Warner Bros.) achieved something that the much bigger “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” didn’t. With the #1 spot again this week on VOD top 10s of iTunes, Google Play, and Vudu, it becomes the first film to do this since “Avatar: The Way of Water” last year.
It didn’t come without a challenge. “The Iron Claw” (A24), like the Roald Dahl-inspired musical priced at $19.99 (though to buy; “Wonka” remains rental only) when released on Tuesday, held the #1 spot at iTunes for five days before dropping down. It’s #2 as well at Vudu, with the always lagging Google Play showing it at #5.
Netflix saw a similarly close battle, with the original rom-com “Players” debuting on Valentine’s Day leading leading their top 10 for four days until Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving,” the latest Sony release to initially stream on the platform, debuted. The Gina Rodriguez/Damon Wayans Jr. film was directed by Trish Sie.

Will Ferrell and Steve Carell make unlikely, AI-assisted cameos in the Jon Hamm-narrated Super Bowl Lviii trailer for Despicable Me 4.
Universal Pictures released the trailer Sunday, and it is set to run on CBS prior to Reba McEntire performing the National Anthem for the NFL’s big game taking place in Las Vegas. Filmmaker Chris Renaud’s animated movie hits theaters July 3, and focuses on the problems that ensue after Gru (Carell) and his family welcome Gru Jr. to their brood.
The new ad appears to tout the benefits of modern technology but features strange images supposedly generated by AI, including women exercising with extra limbs and a group of friends enjoying handfuls of spaghetti.
“Artificial intelligence is changing the world, showing us what we never thought possible, transforming the way we do business, and bringing family and friends closer together,” Hamm says in the spot.

It's been 14 years since Illumination entered the movie scene with "Despicable Me," and in that time, the film series has become the highest-grossing animated franchise ever. It has done so on the back of catchy tunes, memorable characters, a fun story of a villain accidentally (and reluctantly) finding redemption, and also the cultural phenomenon that is the Minions.
After the second movie in the franchise, we've also seen a new spin-off movie in between each new "Despicable Me" film that's centered on the Minions and their adventures before they met their best friend and overlord Gru. Now, after a seven-year absence, Gru is finally back -- and this time, he encounters an even greater challenge than when he tried to steal the moon. Now, he's a father.
That's right, following the monumental success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Illumination is taking the "Shrek" route with Gru and the Minions by giving Gru a family.

Reformed supervillain Felonius Gru (Steve Carell) has come a long way since "Despicable Me" released back in 2010 -- the billion-dollar box office hit that put brand new animation studio Illumination on the map. In the first film, Gru adopted three orphan girls as part of a plot to steal the Moon, intending to discard them when they were no long of any use to him. But Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Elsie Fisher) melted Gru's villainous heart and he ended up keeping them.
In "Despicable Me 2," Gru turned away from his former life of crime and began working as an agent for the Anti-Villain League. Gru's family grew a little bigger when Felonius married fellow Avl agent Lucy Wilde (Kristen Wiig) at the end of the sequel. Now, the trailer for "Despicable Me 4" has introduced Gru and Lucy's baby son, Gru Jr., who seems unimpressed by his infamous father.

Super Mario Bros emerged as one of the highest-earning movies of 2023 so far, creating several other box office records. The animated movie is based on the iconic Nintendo Mario video game. It had actors like Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, and others in the voice cast, and they all did a splendid job, especially Jack has been receiving a lot of praise for his voice acting and his song ‘Peaches.’
Jack reportedly wrote the lyrics of the song himself. The song is about his love for Princess Peach, and the versatile actor sang it himself. In a recent interview, Black shared his thoughts on the sequel of the video game-inspired film. The film is directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic and was made on an estimated budget of $100 million.

While Tafiti believes he should venture alone, Bristles reminds him that adventures are more fun together.

“Barbie” is the latest film to cross the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office, a feat accomplished by only 52 other films in history. The oldest film on the list is Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park,” which didn’t crack the $1 billion mark until the film’s 20th anniversary re-release in 2013. The first film to ever crack $1 billion was James Cameron’s Oscar-winning “Titanic,” which still sits at #3 on the list with a whopping $2.2 billion. Cameron, of course, dominates the list with three films in the Top 5 including “Avatar,” still the highest-grossing film ever made.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has more films in the $1 billion club than any other franchise with 10, while Disney has more films on the list than any other studio with 24 thanks to Marvel, Pixar, “Star Wars” and Disney animation and live-action remakes.

Refresh for chart…On the bright side for Independence Day bomb Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, its first five days at the box office of $82M aren’t as bad as Paramount/Skydance’s Terminator Genisys.
That sequel’s launch just prior to July 4, 2015 left a lot of methane in the air with $42.4M in its Wednesday to Sunday. The attempted Arnold Schwarzenegger comeback movie ended its domestic run at $89.7M, and Dial of Destiny will cross that mark before its first week is up.
Comparing July 4th tentpole hits and bombs can be tricky. Since the holiday skips around, sometimes studios launch on a Wednesday, sometimes a Friday so for the box office fanatics, everything is apples-to-oranges. The last time July 4th fell on a Tuesday was 2017 and 2006. In 2017, over the Friday-Tuesday frame, Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 3 led with $99M, followed by Sony/MRC’s Baby Driver with $29.97M.

You’d think the box office “Fast X” is pulling in China — $77 million in the first five days — would be encouraging news. It’s the best-performing Hollywood movie in a market that’s been resistant to the American dream factory’s charms as of late, and the haul for the latest installment of Universal’s “Fast Saga” nearly matched the five-day domestic total of $81 million.
But that ignores a critical factor: The “Fast & the Furious” series has been bigger in China than in the U.S. since 2015, routinely earning 25%-30% of its global box office in the country and arguably making it the emblem of Hollywood’s ambitions for one of the world’s largest and increasingly affluent pool of moviegoers.
Some plugged-in observers are holding out hope that China will snap back and become a steady contributor to theatrical revenue once more. “I don’t think it’s back to normal,...

Update, writethru: After crossing the $300M mark globally through Monday last week, Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has thrust to another milestone. The James Gunn-directed threequel handily crossed the half a billion mark in the sophomore frame and now sits at an estimated $528.8M global through Sunday. Of that, $213.2M is from domestic and $315.6M at the international box office.

Universal’s CinemaCon presentation Wednesday night included an extended look at DreamWorks Animation’s “Trolls Band Together,” due in theaters Nov. 17.
The plot, concerning Branch’s estranged brother coming into Branch and Poppy’s lives, isn’t that different from “Despicable Me 3.” That said, nobody goes to a “Trolls” movie for the plot. It’s all about the psychedelic musical mind melt that’s also super kid-friendly.
Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake took to the stage to reveal a never-before-seen musical clip from the movie. The footage starts the same as the theatrical trailer, with Poppy and Branch going to a wedding and wondering if they too should tie the knot. We meet Branch’s lost-lost and estranged brother and then the trio are whisked away to rescue the other captive brothers. That leads to the usual colorful adventures, including a brief detour into 2-D animation.

Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s The Super Mario Bros Movie has notched yet another milestone, crossing the $900M mark globally with Tuesday’s grosses included.
Through 21 days in release, the worldwide cume is $901.2M with $444M from domestic and $457.2M at the international box office.
As we pointed out at the weekend, it’s just a matter of when the Aaron Horvath/Michael Jelenic-directed adaptation tops the $1B threshold. Recall that Korea opens today and Japan is due to join the party on Friday. In the former, the early estimated opening day, plus previews, is $774K. That figure is not reflected in the totals above.
The news is terrifically timed and a Wahoo! for Universal which will be hosting its slate presentation this afternoon here at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament took a hiatus during the pandemic as movie theaters closed for the majority of 2020-2021 and theatrical day-and-date titles on both the big screen and studios’ respective streaming platforms became more prevalent. Coming back from that brink, the studios have largely returned to their theatrical release models and the downstream monies they can bring. Not to mention their power in launching IPs around the world with big global marketing campaigns. When it comes to evaluating the financial performance of top movies, it isn’t about what a film grosses at the box office. The true tale is told when production budgets, P&a, talent participations and other costs collide with box office grosses, and ancillary revenues from VOD to DVD and TV. To get close to that mysterious end of the equation, Deadline is repeating our Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2022, using data culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Who says people don’t go to the movies? That stale cynicism coming out of the pandemic is about to get squashed this weekend as Illumination/Universal’s The Super Mario Bros Movie is about to run up a serious box office score. With a Wednesday opening before Easter around the world, inclusive of 70 offshore markets, the Nintendo co-production is looking at a $225 million-plus opening frame. If Marvel fatigue is real, it isn’t manifesting itself in Fandango’s “most anticipated movies of 2023” survey. Among the 5,000 Fandango users polled, the most anticipated films coming next year are “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and the Sony-produced Marvel sequel “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
The hope is that an overall increase in theatrical releases in 2023 will help close the gap between the current overall domestic box office for the late 2010s. The overall box office is down around 43 from the last few pre-covid years, and there were around 45 fewer theatrical releases compared to 2019.
Among those polled by the movie ticketing company, 99 were excited to see new movies in theaters, 97 pledged to attend more often compared to 2022 and 72 wanted to see more movies in IMAX and other premium large-format auditoriums.

While the overall projected 435 million global weekend for “Avatar: The Way of Water” qualifies as a good start, the film stumbled hard in China. Despite pre-release tracking suggesting an over/under 120 million opening in the world’s second-biggest moviegoing marketplace, the 3-D action sequel earned just 57.1 million. It’s the latest example of a big Hollywood movie underwhelming in China.
Its opening day was around 24 million, essentially tied with the 24.6 million first Friday of “Aquaman” in 2018. While the James Wan-directed underwater action fantasy earned 94 million over its Friday-Sunday weekend, the James Cameron-directed underwater action fantasy barely doubled its opening day.
“Aquaman” legged out to 298 million in China (out of 1.15 billion worldwide). Even if “Avatar: The Way of Water” benefits from post-debut legs, strong word of mouth and audiences waiting until they can see it in IMAX or related Plf auditoriums — 99 of the ticket sales were for 3-D shows...

James Cameron’s 3-D sequel just won approval for release on Dec. 16, the same day the sequel opens in most territories, including the U.S. The global success of the original “Avatar” — which earned a then-record 200 million when it opened in China in early 2010 (a 2021 re-release earned an additional 57 million) — helped convince Hollywood to focus on the Middle Kingdom as a growing movie market. However, Lightstorm and 20th Century Studios’ sequel is one of the last, best chances the superpower will have to show that Hollywood should...

The film directed by Kyle Balda and co-directed by Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val also stars Russell Brand, Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh and Julie Andrews.
Set in 1970s suburbia, Gru is a 12-year-old boy in this movie. When Gru crosses paths with the Minions, including Kevin, Stuart, Bob, and Otto—a new Minion sporting...

Moviegoers really love those tiny yellow henchmen.
“Minions: The Rise of Gru” hit an important milestone over the weekend, crossing 500 million at the international box office. According to Universal, those ticket sales are in line with where the franchise’s previous films — including 2015’s “Minions” and 2017’s “Despicable Me 3” — were at the same point in their respective theatrical runs. Those two films each grossed over 700 million overseas and notched more than 1 billion globally — so “The Rise of Gru” has plenty of ground to make up. Right now, the latest installment in the popular family-friendly series has grossed 868.8 million worldwide.
Following the onset of the pandemic, many blockbusters have struggled to match their pre-pandemic predecessors in terms of global ticket sales. Another Universal release, “Jurassic World Dominion,” is a dinosaur’s throw from reaching the coveted 1 billion mark, with ticket sales at 990 million. Does it have enough juice to become...

With no new wide Hollywood tentpole releases until October, we’re in a period of holdovers, and local titles excelling in their home markets (and beyond), while Top Gun: Maverick continues to soar and there’s a will it or won’t it question mark over Jurassic World Dominion‘s shot at getting to 1B global.

After five weekends in a row of box-office decline and a gloomy season ahead, this weekend saw a bit of an upswing, led by the latest entry in the hugely popular anime franchise Dragon Ball. The overall box office came in at 72.5 million, up 8.2 million from last weekend, and while this weekend sits among the lowest grossing in recent pre-pandemic years, it was still above expectations and may be the best weekend we see for the next eight weeks.
Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero came in first with a prediction-beating 20.1 million, more than doubling the opening of its predecessor Dragon Ball Super: Broly (9.8 million) in 2018. Super Hero’s opening is a frontloaded affair, with more than half of the gross coming from Thursday previews and Friday, but it’s hardly something to be let down by given the weekend numbers. Super Hero even broke the nearly 33-year-long dry spell with...

Universal/Illumination’s Minions: The Rise Of Gru bowed in China today (Friday), grossing an estimated Rmb 21.74M (3.2M), including midnights. This was good for the biggest opening day of a Hollywood animated film during the pandemic.
Overall, and not including China’s Friday, Rise Of Gru has grossed 461.2M at the international box office for 807.7M worldwide.
The origins story from director Kyle Balda and co-directors Brad Ableson and Jonathan del Val, saw its first day in China land above The Croods: A New Age’s Rmb 19.7M from November 27, 2020 as well as other studio toons released in the intervening time.
On Friday, Rise Of Gru ranked No. 3 in the daily chart behind local animated newcomer Yang Jian (New Gods) and the continued play of local blockbuster Moon Man.

After a top seven made up entirely of holdovers last weekend, the box office gets some new blood this weekend with the top spots likely to be held by Beast and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, both of which could open in the double digits. These releases may not bring a boost to the overall box office, which dropped to 65.4 million last weekend, the lowest since February and worse than any pre-pandemic weekend since 2001. However, the two newcomers may be able to keep the numbers afloat after five weekends of decline, with the box office dropping by 28.9 last weekend.
Beast is the only studio outing this weekend, hailing from Universal just after the studio became the first since 2019 to gross over 3 billion within a year. This man vs. beast tale stars Idris Elba opposite a deadly lion in the African savanna, and it fuses thrills with family drama as it...
