Exclusive: Vmi Releasing, the North American distribution arm of Vmi Worldwide, has picked up North American rights to Spanish filmmaker Fernando Trueba’s latest pic Haunted Heart, starring Matt Dillon.
Vmi acquired the pic from Film Constellation. Oscar-winner Trueba directs the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Rylend Grant. Starring alongside Dillon are Goya-nominated Aida Folch (The Artist and the Model) and Juan Pablo Urrego (Memoria).
Set on a beautiful remote island in Greece, a young and spirited Alex (Folch) joins the team of a boutique seaside restaurant as their new waitress. Despite her femme-fatale charm quickly winning the heart of the charismatic Enrico, she instead falls for the enigmatic restaurant manager Max (Dillon), a reclusive American, who settled on the island decades ago. As the seasons pass, sexual tensions rise, and tourists come and go, Enrico begins to unearth disturbing clues about Max’s dark and mysterious past.

Cohen Media Group and Curzon have acquired North American and U.K. distribution rights to the Colombian drama “Forgotten We’ll Be,” directed by Fernando Trueba.
The acquisition was unveiled Monday, and appears to be the first deal announced for a film from the 2020 Cannes Official Selection. It’s also the first acquisition made jointly across both major English-speaking territories since the Cmg purchase of Curzon in December. The film will be released theatrically in the U.S. and U.K. in 2021. Variety revealed the film’s trailer last week.
“Forgotten We’ll Be” is adapted from Héctor Abad Faciolince’s memoir about his father, Colombian human rights activist Dr. Héctor Abad Gómez. Javier Cámara stars in the story of a man torn between the love of his family and his political fight, set in the violence-riddled Colombia of recent decades. Gomez devoted himself to social and political causes before he was murdered in 1987 in Colombia.

Don't worry, he's a good man, but an artist.
A young Catalan girl, Mercè (Aida Folch), has escaped Franco's Spain and found herself in a cozy French town (occupied by the Nazis). Mercè is spotted by Léa (Claudia Cardinale) as a potential model for her husband Marc Cros (Jean Rochefort), a sculptor. In another film, this could well be the start of some very nefarious doings, but in The Artist and the Model (2013), things are exactly as advertised. The hungry refugee takes the job and, the next day, finds herself standing, au natural, moving at the direction of this remote, elderly artist. He gives little consolation or explanation to the young woman, single-mindedly searching for "an idea." He sketches, sculpts, and paints her in many poses, but never to his liking. The world around him is at war, but he stands in his safe little corner surrounded by naked women,...

★★★☆☆ Shot in sumptuous monochrome, Fernando Trueba's thoughtful 2012 film The Artist and The Model - starring French character actor Jean Rochefort - adds to the director's already eclectic oeuvre, making for satisfying viewing. Set in the rural south of France in the middle of the Second World War, we meet ageing, semi-retired sculptor Marc (Rochefort) who lives with his thickly bespectacled housekeeper and wife Léa (played by Italian bombshell Claudia Cardinale), who is now in her seventies. Their life is simplistic and gentle, experiencing little impact from the war that rages on in the north of the occupied country.
The tone of The Artist and The Model is warm and reflective, centred on the contrasting dynamic of the gypsy-like Mercè (Aida Folch) - housed by our couple after escaping war-torn Spain - and the wizened, yet passionate Marc. The arrival of the young girl inspires the artist to once again...

Fernando Trueba’s new black-and-white drama, now out in cinemas, is The Artist and the Model, an affectionate study of a crotchety sculptor (Jean Rochefort) who hopes to complete one last work worthy of his reputation. Unfortunately, he’s being distracted by the Second World War and the pesky demands of other human beings, but his creative block may be lifted by his refreshingly unlecherous friendship with the curvaceous refugee who poses for him. It’s a sparkling gem of a film, but big-screen relationships between artists and their muses aren’t always so heart-warming.

Sixties screen siren Claudia Cardinale talks to Steve Rose about entrancing Fellini, spurning Brando – and why appearing in 135 films still isn't enough
There's nothing Claudia Cardinale hates more than staying still, but for the past two months she's had to do exactly that. She broke her foot on holiday in Tunisia and has since been holed up in her Paris flat. "It was stupid," she says, in her distinctive Mediterranean rasp. "I was playing volleyball. There was water on the edge of swimming pool, and I slipped. I like to be active, so when I have to sit for two months without going out, it's terrible. I had many places to go and I had to refuse: Venice, Kiev, Osaka. Now it's Ok. Yesterday I went out for the first time, but the weather is ugly."
Cardinale is a survivor from the era when movie giants walked the earth – most of them alongside her.

Having delved triumphantly into the world of animation, director Fernando Trueba returns with The Artist and the Model, a film so beautifully arranged, that it doesn’t feel too far removed from the enchanting world which he created in the Oscar nominated Chico & Rita. Animated or not, the Spaniard evidently knows how to tell a story of two people coming together, and whether they be romantic or plutonic, they both have a similarly emotive effect on the viewer.
Though contemplating retirement alongside his wife Léa (Claudia Cardinale), elderly sculptor Marc Cros (Jean Rochefort) finds himself reinvigorated following the arrival of the young Spanish refugee Mercé (Aida Folch), discovering hope amidst the brutal World War that erupts in the distance. After she agrees to model nude for the sculptor, he feels sensually impassioned and enthusiastic about art for the first time in a good, long while.

The Great Beauty (15)
(Paolo Sorrentino, 2013, Ita/Fra) Toni Servillo, Carlo Verdone, Sabrina Ferilli, 141 mins
Sorrentino proves himself a worthy successor to Fellini here, tracking modern Roman decadence with staggering exuberance and an eye for the stylishly surreal. Filling the Marcello Mastroianni role is Servillo's world-weary writer and socialite, who stalks the city's elite demi-monde of hedonistic parties, pretentious art, cynical grotesques and faded glories – but finds reveries and regrets around every corner.
About Time (12A)
(Richard Curtis, 2013, UK) Domhnall Gleeson, Rachel McAdams. 123 mins
A sci-fi element reinvigorates Curtis's trademarked romcom formula, but there's still a feeling of deja vu to this middle-class love story, in which Gleeson uses his inherited time-travelling powers to woo McAdams – albeit at a cost.

France during the war is a perennial setting for filmmakers wishing to impart some quality gravity to their story. The moral stakes are high and clear, the Americans can always be relied upon for a final-act deus ex machina, and everyone just looks so glamorous. Plus, all the international cinema prizes are selected by juries who were young boys at the time, so its an easy and effortless bid for a sentimental vote. The Artist and the Model, Fernando Trueba’s 2012 film about l’occupation de la France, appears to consider itself a contender for membership in this venerable genre. But unfortunately, it’s as lifeless and contrived as an amateur model trying to hold a pose. It has all the set pieces it could possibly want: Nazis, elderly French artists, naked and nubile résistantes. And yet it squanders it on a scanty plot that appears to serve only as justification for letting an old man — the...

In the midst of cruel and troubling times, people naturally tend to rely on not only the physical beauty of the world around them to gain a more positive outlook, but also the meaning in life and the internal beauty of those around them. This is the motivating and humanizing theme in the new French-language Spanish drama, ‘The Artist and the Model,’ from award-winning writer-director Fernando Trueba. The two main characters in the film, who come from different backgrounds and have drastically conflicting motivating factors, authentically come to understand each other’s struggles and will to survive after forming an unexpected relationship. ‘The Artist and the Model’ follows an 80-year-old sculptor, [ Read More ]

Aida Folch and Jean Rochefort in The Artist And The Model In my conversation with Academy Award winning director Fernando Trueba on his latest film The Artist And The Model (El Artista Y La Modelo), we spoke about the influence of a famous father and son, Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Jean Renoir. Grace Kelly, Hedy Lamarr, a François Truffaut Wild Child and Robert Bresson's Au Hasard Balthazar led to the nature of women in Michelangelo Antonioni's Identification Of A Woman.
Alongside Trueba was actress Aida Folch whose character Mercè is recruited by Claudia Cardinale's Léa Cros to become a muse for her husband, the artist Marc Cros, played by Jean Rochefort.
The film set in 1943 was co-written by long-time Buñuel collaborator Jean-Claude Carrière, who together with Günter Grass adapted his novel The Tin Drum for Volker Schlöndorff's Academy Award winning film of the same name. He is...

Choices, choices, choices, choices. My first of the day is "The Daughter," a Russian movie about a village serial killer from an unknown-to-me directing duo. The San Francisco International Film Festival catalogue warns that its English subtitles are "imperfect" (at least, unlike the screening of "The Artist and The Model, they do appear on screen) -- one brief example: "She behaved her unworthily" -- but the film doesn't really suffer. It's a moving, well-acted story which continues, satisfyingly, after the murder "mystery" itself is solved. In the second slot of the day, my choice is made for me: I've already seen the thin and predictable "Unfinished Song," which still boasts interesting performances from Vanessa Redgrave and Terence Stamp, the crowd-pleasing "Twenty Feet from Stardom," the boundary-pushing, verging-on-abstract "Leviathan," which sounded so much like an action-adventure a la "The Deadliest Catch" in its festival blurb that at first I didn't...

The first screening of the first full day of the San Francisco International Film Festival: Fernando Trueba's "The Artist and the Model," set in France in 1944, starring the irresistible duo of Jean Rochefort and Claudia Cardinale. I manage to find myself in a good seat, $4 cup o' Kabuki coffee clutched in my hand, and delicious sustenance from the fabulous Nijiya Market, located exactly in-between the two theaters on Post Street in Japantown where most of the festival unspools, secreted in my tote bag, having successfully negotiated the Bay Bridge and found a decent free parking space. Perfection! Except they can't get the Dcp to work. Programmer Sean Uyehara patiently explains to us that along with the digital cinema package, they're sent a digital key that will only unlock the print half-an-hour before it's scheduled to play. Which is when they discovered that the subtitles were out of synch. So they've requested a new key,...

One of the most interesting U.S. Distributors these days is Cohen Media Group. Its films are daring and interesting, ranging from documentaries like Chasing Madoff and Frozen River to multi-award winning Spanish film Blancanieves. Later this month it will release the daring film The Attack based on the best selling novel L'Attentat by renowned Algerian writer Yasmina Khadra.
The Attack, directed by Ziad Doueiri and written by Ziad Doueiri and Joelle Touma won three honors at the recently concluded Col*Coa, the second largest French Film Festival in the world after Cannes. “Stories We Tell”
Sarah Polley has transitioned from actress to director with remarkable ease, delivering the critically acclaimed “Away From Her” and “Take This Waltz.” Her latest film happens to be about her own drama as the documentary “Stories We Tell” attempts to answer questions about her mother’s past and becomes something of a commentary on how and why we tell these stories in the first place.

Guadalajara (Mexico), March 4 (Ians/Efe) Contemporary life is too "boring" to make movies about, Spanish director Fernando Trueba, who much prefers period pieces, said.
"It makes me feel a lot freer, because when you do a story that occurred in the past, you can fantasize and concentrate on talking about things that are really important," the 58-year-old director said the day before the inauguration of the Guadalajara International Film Festival.
The Spaniard, who gave Friday a masterly lecture to cinema students, is screening in this western Mexican city his 2012 film "El Artista y la Modelo" (Artist and Model), which he wrote and directed.
Set in 1943 France during the German occupation, the film tells the story.
