All Australian screen agencies are failing to develop female feature directors, according to Megan Simpson Huberman.
The agencies .cannot continue doing the same things and expecting a different result. And the current result - 15% of Australian dramatic features directed by women - is unacceptable,. she writes in the latest issue of Aftrs. Lumina magazine, which is devoted to gender equality in the screen industry.
Among the other factors which contribute to the under-representation of female directors, she says, are Australian film distribution companies which are run by blokes; and international film festival directors who are mostly male.
A former director of development and production investment at Screen Nsw and development executive at Screen Australia, Simpson Huberman is attached to direct Salvation Creek, a drama about a high-flying magazine editor whose husband and brother die within three days of each other, with producer Heather Ogilvie.

When Philip Quast accepted the role of Artist in Residence at the National Institute of Dramatic Art this year, he had a dual motive.
The first was to impart as much knowledge as he could to his students, drawing on nearly 35 years as an actor in stage, film and television. The second was to learn more about the mindset and motivations of aspiring young actors and directors.
.As older artists we have not necessarily come to terms with the fact that, for us, language revolves around form while for the younger generation it revolves around function, .said Quast, who graduated from Nida in 1979.
.Shakespeare is not being taught properly in schools any more, grammar is not being taught in the same way. Younger people tend not to ask questions because the answers are already being given on things like Facebook.

Believe the hype, folks. Sean Byrne's critically acclaimed feature film The Loved Ones (review here) is every bit as good as you have heard. Even better? Word from the director has surfaced about not only what's next, but what's up with a domestic release here in the States.
In an interview with What's Playing Byrne revealed the following: "[the next film] lends itself more to a prequel. I’ve actually got 12 pages of back-story so… watch this space."
As for why The Loved Ones hasn't been released here yet, the powers that be are still sorting out whether or not it will “get a wide release or a small boutique release. As you know, it’s got commercial qualities, but it’s also a very subversive take on the genre… but it will be coming out in theaters one way or the other."

We've extolled the merits of Aussie crime drama Animal Kingdom, which was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics after it won the Sundance's World Cinema Jury Prize. Now the distributor -- which in recent years has also taken a chance on Down Under flicks Jindabyne, Gabriel, and Introducing The Dwights -- is to release Red Hill, an antipodean "neo western", despite both The Hollywood Reporter and Variety prognosticating after its Berlinale premiere that the pic would be unlikely to travel far beyond its home shores.

While some don't believe wishes come true, they certainly are for writer and director J. Harkness (Shot Of Love) as his latest film, Birthday, has been Officially Selected In Competition for the Anchorage International Film Festival, and will be releasing in Australia in 2010. J. Harkness' first wish was to adapt his stage play, Birthday, into an independent feature film. This wish came true when he found financial backing, a passionate and impressive cast, and the support of the sex industry, in which the film is set. All were inspired by Birthday's story of human intimacy and love within the conflicting and compelling world of sex workers, and the film was filmed in Harkness' home town of Adelaide in 2008, with a cast that includes Kestie Morassi (Wolf Creek), Richard Wilson (Clubland), Travis McMahon (Kokoda), Chantal Contouri and newcomer and co-producer Natalie Eleftheriadis in the lead role.

Julien Temple's The Eternity is a not a movie one should watch if they enjoy the delights of plot, dialogue or subtlety. If, instead, you enjoy your movies to be all pyrotechnics and razzle dazzle mise-en-scène then perhaps it is for you. And even then you will have to get past the singing. Oh yes, there will be singing. I will be the first to admit that opera isn't exactly "my thing", but I can handle it all well and good in small doses and if, ya know, performed well. And yet while I can't call myself a particularly good judge of what makes one opera good and another bad, I must say I found the nauseating operatic warblings in The Eternity Man to be an insufferable mess.

SYDNEY -- Two films that deal with Australian immigrant stories -- Romulus, My Father, set in the postwar era, and The Home Song Stories, set in the 1970s -- shared the spoils with three awards apiece at Thursday's Australian Film Institute Awards.
Romulus, Richard Roxburgh's directorial debut, took home best film, though Roxburgh couldn't beat out Tony Ayres for best director for Home Song. Ayres also won best screenplay, and Joan Chen -- who reportedly came out of semi-retirement to play Shanghai nightclub signer Rose as she struggles to deal with two children in 1970s Australia -- won best actress. The wins gave Home Song eight AFI Awards; it received five craft awards in a separate ceremony Wednesday.
Romulus' other wins includes best actor for Eric Bana and best supporting actor to Martin Csokas.
Kodi Smit-McPhee, 10, who played Romulus' son Raymond, won the AFI Young Actor Award.
The best supporting actress nod went to Emma Booth for playing the feisty vixen Jill in Cherie Nowlan's Clubland.
With Geoffrey Rush hosting and stars including Cate Blanchett, Eric Bana and Anthony La Paglia presenting, the awards are billed as a celebration of Australian film.

NEW YORK -- Matthew Lillard will star in the Lighthouse Entertainment 1980s-set teen comedy Endless Bummer, playing a surf shop owner who helps a group of teens track down a prized stolen surfboard.
The actor joins rocker Joan Jett, Khan Chittenden (Introducing the Dwights) and Jane Leeves (Frasier) for the feature. He plays a veteran surfer who built the board and joins its current owner and friends on a road trip from Ventura, Calif., to the San Fernando Valley to get it back.
Bummer is based on the real-life experiences of screenwriter John 'J.D.' Drury. Lillard joins the production of director Sam Pillsbury's feature this week.
Lighthouse's Steven Siebert (The Darwin Awards, The Rookie) is producing the film with Drury, Todd Wiseman and John Sclimenti (Riding in Vans With Boys). Rosemary Marks ("thirteen") is co-producing.
Vans Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman will executive produce with Darren Quon. The Bummer soundtrack will include new covers of '80s songs from several Vans Warped Tour artists.
"This is a genuine story of a pivotal day for a group of young Ventura surfers in 1984," Siebert said.

PARK CITY -- Four million appeared to be the magic number at the Sundance Film Festival as acquisitions heated up Monday.
Three films sold at or near that price: Fox Searchlight took worldwide rights to the late actress-writer-director Adrienne Shelly's "Waitress" for slightly less than $4 million and George Ratliff's psychological thriller "Joshua" for $3.7 million, while Warner Independent Pictures put down $4 million for a collection of rights to Cherie Nowlan's Australian romance "Clubland".
"No distributor wants to overlook a potential success like 'Little Miss Sunshine' or 'Half Nelson, ' " said William Morris Independent co-head Rena Ronson, who sold "Grace Is Gone" to the Weinstein Co. on Sunday. "They're finding films that either fulfill an economic model that makes sense and/or can garner some kind of award."
Searchlight, which is on an acquisition binge, closed the deal on "Waitress" after the film screened for its second time Monday morning. It was the third and final feature from the filmmaker, who was killed in her New York apartment in early November.
"Waitress" stars Keri Russell in the title role of a poor Southern woman trapped in a bad marriage who finds true love when a new gynecologist comes to town. It was produced by Michael Roiff and executive produced by Todd King, Jeff Rose, Danielle Renfrew and Robert Bauer. Searchlight plans a 2007 release.
The deal was brokered on Fox Searchlight's side by senior vp acquisitions Tony Safford and executive vp business affairs Stephen Plum with the Film Sales Co. president Andrew Herwitz and Irwin Rappaport repping the filmmakers.
Searchlight went on to purchase virtually all worldwide rights minus Canada to Ratliff's "Joshua"; Ratliff helmed the 2001 documentary "Hell House". The film, which debuted Saturday night, tells the tale of a disturbed child who slowly turns the life of his family upside down. Starring Sam Rockwell, Vera Farmiga and young newcomer Jacob Kogan, "Joshua" triggered interest from multiple parties, but it was Searchlight that came through in the end. "George Ratliff and David Gilbert have created an unbelievably tense and frightful tale," said Searchlight president Rice, who plans a summer release.
Tony Safford, senior vp acquisitions and production at 20th Century Fox, and Stephen Plum, executive vp business affairs, negotiated on behalf of Searchlight, while UTA and attorney Andrew Hurwitz represented the filmmakers.

PARK CITY -- In what may be one of the biggest sales at Sundance, Warner Independent Pictures is buying North American, U.K. and German rights to Clubland, Cherie Nowlan's Australian romance starring Brenda Blethyn.
Purchased for $4 million without access to international rights, which will be handled by executive producer and sales agent Tristan Whalley and Nicki Parfitt of Goalpost Film, the film may be the richest deal yet for a Sundance filmmaker. WIP confirmed the deal Monday afternoon. The distributor plans a summer 2007 release.
Clubland, which centers on an unconventional family that is threatened by the son falling in love with a beautiful girl, received a standing ovation from the audience after its second screening early Monday morning. The film premiered Sunday night to a packed house at the Eccles Theatre.
Paul Federbush and Courtney Armstrong negotiated on WIP's behalf. Rena Ronson, Phil Alberstat and Cassian Elwes of William Morris Independent repped the filmmakers.

SYDNEY -- A new Australian production company set to launch at MIP-TV has secured first-look development financing deals with U.K.-based Channel 4 International for drama and RDF International for factual programs. Producers Chris Hilton and Rosemary Blight, specialists in documentary and drama respectively, revealed the deals Wednesday while previewing an announcement slated for MIP-TV that they have joined forces to create Essential Viewing, a television and film development and production company. Hilton was previously a founding partner of the prolific Australian factual producer Hilton Cordell Prods. Blight and her RB Films' credits include television's Small Claims and the upcoming feature film Clubland. The producers said Wednesday in a statement that the new company would focus on developing a slate of co-financed drama and factual projects for the domestic and international marketplace.
