Exclusive: Fundamental Films chairman Mark Gao and his CEO Ivy Hua are in Cannes to reconnect with the international industry as part of the Shanghai-based company’s return to international acquisitions and production.
One of the biggest and longest-established Chinese buyers before the pandemic, Fundamental is also an investor in Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp and has a long-standing output deal to release the French studio’s films in China – it will soon release Weekend In Taipei, directed by George Huang and starring Luke Evans and Gwei Lun-mei. It also was also recently signed by UTA for representation across production, distribution and investment opportunities.
Chinese buyers have been a rare sight on the Croisette in recent years, a consequence of travel restrictions during the pandemic and a slowdown in censorship approvals, but now the borders are wide open, and Gao thinks the time is right to step back into the international market.

Rubbing shoulders with a few of the most prolific action stars in the modern day, Jason Statham has made it a habit of kicking butts on screen. From starring in action-packed films like The Transporter, The Expendables, and even the Fast & Furious franchise, Statham has skillfully turned his on-screen fights into realistic sequences with his martial arts knowledge.

Louis Leterrier may be gearing up for Fast 11, but he still has other projects ready to go. The key one right now is sci-fi horror flick 11817, which is expected to begin filming this summer. As such, we have received some casting news, with Kingsley Ben-Adir and Greta Lee lined up for unspecified roles.
No other cast has been announced at this time for 11817 but kicking it off with the likes of Kingsley Ben-Adir and Greta Lee does add some serious talent to the project. Ben-Adir has really made his mark over the past few years, playing Malcolm X and Bob Marley to much praise. Lee, meanwhile, co-led Best Picture nominee Past Lives (and probably deserved an Oscar nod herself) and has Tron: Ares set up.
Louis Leterrier will be quite busy this year, saying that once he finishes up this “little horror movie” in mid-September, he will be jumping right into Fast 11 the next day,...

Director Louis Leterrier moves into the horror genre with the upcoming film 11817, Deadline reports today.
Rocket Science is presenting the project to buyers in Cannes.
“The film watches as inexplicable forces trap a family of four inside their house indefinitely. As both modern luxuries and life or death essentials begin to run out, the family must learn how to be resourceful to survive and outsmart who — or what — is keeping them trapped.”
Matthew Robinson (The Invention of Lying) wrote the screenplay.
“Directing projects where the audience gets behind the characters has always been my focus. However complex, flawed, heroic, we identify with them as we live through their journey,” said Leterrier. “It’s what excites me about 11817‘s wholly original concept and the family at the heart of our story. This is an experience that movie audiences won’t forget.”

It used to be said that every movie, no matter how badly it did at the box office or critically, went to heaven. Heaven, of course, meant physical media. First, it was VHS, then it was Laserdisc, then DVD, Blu-ray, and now 4K Blu-rays; every movie would get some kind of physical media release. After all, rentals and sales were important to a film’s profitability. In fact, some movies that tanked theatrically did so well on DVD that they became perennials, such as Donnie Darko or The Transporter, with the DVD sales of that movie directly influencing the studio to greenlight a sequel and give Jason Statham a legit career as an action star. Yet, despite physical media making a comeback, it’s worth noting that some of the most popular movies in recent memory have never gotten a physical media release. And we’re not only talking about...

Elliot Page came to the Junos Awards on Sunday night to denounce a rollback of LGBTQ2+ rights after the Umbrella Academy star came out as transgender and nonbinary at the end of 2020.
“We are at a time in history where the rights of LGBTQ2+ people are being revoked, restricted and eliminated throughout the world, and the effects are devastating,” Page said when citing the work by the Tegan and Sara Foundation to support and build social change for trans and queer youth at the Junos in his hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia.
“If the world was not so hostile to LGBTQ2+ people, we would see ourselves purely as musicians,” Sara Quin, one half of the Canadian indie pop musicians Tegan and Sara, told the Juno audience. She called out the province of Alberta for recently proposing to restrict health care for transgender youth, including halting access to hormone therapy for children aged 15 and under.

Just a few weeks after one of the stars of the John Wick franchise, Ian McShane, ripped Lionsgate’s TV spin-off The Continental live on TV, the studio seems like it’s going full steam ahead on a John Wick TV show. According to Deadline, Lionsgate vice chairman Michael Burns said as much during a Q&a at the Morgan Stanley media conference. “I think we’ll take one of our great action franchises starring Keanu Reeves, I think it’ll be a television series,” said Burns, who also revealed that the studio is planning a Twilight animated series too.
Readers will remember another John Wick tv series, The Continental, dropping just a few months ago. According to Burns, the new Wick show will not be related to that series of three 90-minute telefilms, which was about the early adventures of the character played by Ian McShane in the proper John Wick movies,...

Actor Jason Statham is known for playing characters that are described as tough, gritty, or violent in packed action-thriller movies. The actor has been credited for leading the resurgence of action movies during the 2000s and 2010s. Statham is known to be one of the most bankable stars in the industry, and Bruce Willis is to be thanked for it, in a way.
Jason Statham has appeared in movies, including the Transporter trilogy, The Italian Job, Crank, War, Fast & Furious franchise, and more. The actor has, over the years, managed to not only impress the audience with his performances but also become one of the most influential celebrities in the world.

What does a transporter even do? In the "Transporter" action-thriller film series, Jason Statham plays Frank Martin, the titular transporter who acts as a driver-for-hire, who moves packages for selective clients without any questions asked. Martin is not your average transporter, as his impressive military background grants him an edge during combat, which is an inevitability when such high risk is involved. Martin strives to maintain a clearly defined double life with little to no overlap and expects his clients to adhere to his incorrigible personal code, which includes never altering the deal or opening client packages, and absolutely no names.
At first glance, the watch order for the "Transporter" series seems pretty straightforward, with four movies etching out Martin's arc and the shenanigans that ensue because of his unique occupation. However, for the sake of continuity, the release date order needs to be shifted around a bit, while one...

Sunday Am Update: How bad was this year’s Super Bowl weekend? Realize that Kenneth Branagh’s romance mystery misfire, Death on the Nile, opened to more over the Big Game weekend ($12.8M) two years ago, and that’s when female moviegoers were scared of Omicron!
Super Bowl weekend, despite its damper on Sunday business, used to be a box office frame that could still yield results, even for films aimed at dudes. Like in 2015, when the sixth weekend of American Sniper drummed up $30.7 million, or in 2020, when the third weekend of Bad Boys for Life did $17.6M.
Last year’s Super Bowl weekend totaled $52.6M, per Box Office Mojo, led by Warner Bros’ Magic Mike’s Last Dance, with an $8.3M opening. This year, we’re lower at $40M, -24% from a year ago and that’s because there isn’t a notable major studio wide release. That’s also...

An old-style Jason Statham film, with a bit of beekeeping? The movie year is off to a fine start. Here’s our The Beekeeper review.
I’m not familiar with just what inspired action thriller The Beekeeper, but never in my wildest dreams did I imagine a film that actually delivered on its title. An action thriller, with Jason Statham as a man who keeps bees?
Surely nobody would offer up a gift like that.
Well, chums, not only have they done so, but they’ve also delivered one of the best pure Jason Statham action films in some time.
It opens with some serious-looking academic stuff about bees playing under the opening credits, so I got the sense it might commit to its moniker. Then, early on, The Statham sincerely delivers the line “I just want to thank you for putting up with me… and all of my bees”.
At that moment,...

In the early 2000s, Jason Statham was positioning himself as the next big action star, leading the century off with his Transporter movies, the Crank double feature and so many others. And Statham has more or less stuck to the genre, joining the ensembles of The Expendables and Fast & Furious series as the decades turned. And not that you would, but don’t expect to see Statham in a superhero movie…primarily due to the getup.
Speaking at the Red Sea Film Festival (via Variety), Jason Statham said he just can’t picture himself in the stereotypical superhero outfit. “I don’t have a big appetite for a costume, with cape and tights…I like old school 80s movies. I was inspired by people like Stallone and Arnold. And even before those guys, Steve McQueen, Paul Newman and Eastwood. I just couldn’t see any of those guys putting on a cape,...

Sylvester Stallone helped Dolph Lundgren achieve action star status when he cast him in Rocky IV. But action films changed a bit over the years thanks to features like The Bourne trilogy. Lundgren seemed to feel this could be both a positive and a negative.
What Dolph Lundgren felt about Matt Damon’s ‘Bourne’ movies Dolph Lundgren | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Lundgren has starred in his own fair share of action movies. He starred in such features as 1989’s The Punisher and Universal Soldier, and held a certain fondness for action stars in the 80s. To him, the action heroes of yesterday had the physique to earn their roles more so than the action stars of today.
“Back in those days, you took somebody who could take their shirt off and have real muscles. Now, you take somebody who has won an Academy Award, put them in a suit, and he...

With “Star Trek,” he’s one of the most beloved science-fiction creators of all time. But Gene Roddenberry took his first stab at sci-fi almost a decade earlier, by pitching an episode titled “The Transporter” — a name that certainly resonates with “Star Trek” fans — to the anthology series “Science Fiction Theatre” in 1955.
IndieWire exclusively presents that original pitch document, with pencil corrections in Roddenberry’s own handwriting, that the TV writer, then just starting out, sent to series executives. The Roddenberry estate believes this document to be his first-ever attempt at writing science-fiction. It’s like seeing the first-ever attempt at dripping paint on canvas by Jackson Pollack.
This document will be discussed in detail on the October 26 episode of the “Gene-ology” podcast, which is devoted to the life and times of the man nicknamed “The Great Bird of the Galaxy” and is produced by Roddenberry Entertainment.

Pundits have been talking about Jason Statham as the last old-school action hero for nearly 20 years. Yes, “The Transporter” opened two decades ago. Since then, he’s expanded his horizons here and there, taking high-profile supporting roles in “The Fast and Furious” series and “Spy” while offering his star power to “The Meg” films and the “Hobbs & Shaw” spin-off.
However, his latest offering, about a guy avenging the death of a mentor/caretaker (played by Phylicia Rashad) using talents specific to his role as a beekeeper, feels like a prototypical Statham vehicle. This quest for revenge, courtesy of director David Ayer and writer Kurt Wimmer, is going to sting.
The trailer, which you can watch above, offers the expected set-up, while also introducing Jeremy Irons as the eventual big boss. The stakes-setting prologue precedes an expected montage of explosions, shoot-outs and righteous murders. The twist is that Statham is...

They sold it with a list of surnames: Stallone. Statham. Li. Lundgren. Couture. Austin. Crews. Willis. The only name missing was Schwarzenegger, and that’s simply because they wanted his cameo to be a surprise. (He’d make the poster for the sequel.) Two of them came from the worlds of pro-wrestling and UFC fighting, and one of them was an ex-NFL linebacker. But it still read like an Action Hero Hall of Fame roll call, especially in the year of our lord 2010. That was the appeal, or maybe just the gimmick,...

Jason Statham is a franchise unto himself. He tends to more or less play the same growly-voiced butt-kicking macho man over and over with superficial differences, like how his titular super-spy in "Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre" enjoys a fine wine. Or how his personal driver, Frank Martin, in "The Transporter" films is meticulous about keeping his suits clean and neatly pressed. You always know exactly what to expect from his films and there's a comfort in that. They embody the type of "Action Movies Your Dad Watches" that were the bread and butter of networks like TNT and TBS in the pre-streaming age of cable.

Long before he ever signed on to direct Fast X, director Louis Leterrier was an expert at staging cinematic mayhem. After all, this is the man who made Jason Statham an action star in the first two Transporter movies and directed the best English-language Jet Li movie, Unleashed (aka Danny the Dog). He also made one of the first proper MCU movies (The Incredible Hulk), the smash hit Clash of the Titans remake, and Now You See Me. So, when Justin Lin quit the franchise, Universal needed someone who could jump in and pick up the pieces quickly, and Leterrier did such a good job he’s already been signed to direct Fast X – Part 2.

British singer-actor Luke Evans and Taiwanese female actor Gwei Lun-mei will co-star in “Weekend Escape Project,” an action thriller being produced in Taiwan by EuropaCorp.
The film marks a further comeback for EuropaCorp after a four-year hiatus that followed the personal travails of its founder, Luc Besson, and financial difficulties at the company. EuropaCorp was taken over by its junior lender, Vine Alternative Investments, in 2020, as part of a restructuring deal.
Besson and Virginie Besson-Silla are producing the movie for EuropaCorp. Kinology is handling international sales.
Directed by George Huang, the film (aka “Weekend in Taipei”) is set to start shooting on July 3 in Taipei, Taiwan’s capital. Production is expected to take three months and take in locations including the Ximending district, Zhongshan Hall, the Dome and Taipei City Hall.
In February, Besson-Silla scouted locations for the film with director Olivier Megaton (“Transporter 3”) and met with Taipei mayor Wayne Chiang.

If you’re wondering what’s new on Amazon Prime Video in June, the answer is a lot. The streamer has a solid slate of movies heading into summer 2023. From the first two “Creed” films to “Love, Rosie,” “Yours, Mine & Ours” and other clever romantic comedies, the streamer has a range of options for viewers with different tastes. Newer theatrical releases arriving on the streamer in June include “TÁR,” “Armageddon Time,” and “M3GAN.”
TV premieres to look forward to include Boots Riley’s “I’m A Virgo” and the fourth and final season of John Krasinski’s “Jack Ryan.” “Crazy Rich Asians” arrives early in June, followed by “Interstellar” for all Christopher Nolan and Matthew McConaughey lovers. Even though “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” doesn’t release in theaters until November, all four “Hunger Games” films land on Prime Video this June. Perfect timing — maybe even with a reread...

With its list of new releases for June 2023, Prime is bringing a handful of Amazon Originals and many recent movie hits to the fold.
It’s actually quite a busy month for non-American programming in Amazon Originals department. Shows and movies like Deadloch, My Fault, and Medellín all originate from outside the U.S. and U.K. For the American and British crowd, however, the streamer is debuting two big tentpoles.
The first is I’m a Virgo on June 23. Acclaimed director Boots Riley’s TV followup to Sorry to Bother You will tale the surreal and satirical tale of a giant in Oakland. That will be followed by the more conventional (assumedly) fourth season of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on June 30.

Tubi opens June with an intense WWII drama “Inglourious Basterds.” Allied officer Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) assembles a team of five tough Jewish soldiers to spread fear throughout the Third Reich. If the Fast and Furious series has taught us anything, it’s that there is nothing more important than family. Not really. It has demonstrated that there is nothing cooler than a movie with fast cars. The rev of the engine, the sound of it tearing down a stretch of asphalt, and the shot of the cool car flying past the camera. That is what the series has taught us. With the recent release of Fast X, we see that there is still a lot of life left in movies about the need for speed. What are some of the best car movies to get your engine revving?
Christine (1983)
Okay, so maybe this one isn’t so much about fast cars as it is about falling in love with your car. Not as much as Titane, but the love story is still there. Arnie finds himself obsessed...

This post contains spoilers for "Fast X"
"Fast X" had an impressive $320 million box office debut, suggesting audiences still can't get enough of the "Fast" franchise's high-octane action and outlandish set-pieces. Universal spent a mind-boggling $340 million on the tenth installment in the series. And while the whole premise of this franchise is to push the action further with each successive movie, there's more to its box office draw than physics-defying car chases and action spectacle.
Case in point: Jason Momoa. The "Aquaman" star plays the film's big bad, Dante, in Fast X, and his unhinged, chaotic performance is one of the main reasons the film is outrageously entertaining. And if you know anything about the behind-the-scenes woes the movie faced, specifically the abrupt departure of longtime "Fast and Furious" director Justin Lin, you won't be surprised to learn that Momoa actually improvised much of his ostentatious performance during shooting.

Also known as The Lady Dragon, Cynthia Rothrock first started acting in Hong Kong films in the 1980s following a very successful career as a competition martial artist. She holds 5 black belts and is ranked 8th Dan Grandmaster. She competed against men for a good part of her competition days due to there not always being a women’s category, where she won many times over. Her achievement in the martial arts world got her the first female cover of Karate Illustrated and her film career is filled with action and a bit of humor. Here are 5 of the best Cynthia Rothrock movies:
Yes, Madam (1985)
Her very first movie role, the part of Inspector Carrie Moss was designed for Rothrock and her skills, or so it would seem while watching the film. Directed by Corey Yuen and co-starring Michelle Yeoh, a woman who needs no introduction at this point, the...
