Next Tuesday marks the third anniversary of Justice League debuting in theaters, and it would be an understatement of massive proportions to say that a lot has happened since then. After Zack Snyder was forced to drop out, Joss Whedon stepped in and reworked the entire project from almost the ground up, only for the finished product to disappoint critically and commercially.
Most blockbusters would kill for a box office haul of $657 million, but that number still wasn’t enough to see Justice League turn a profit given that the tortured nature of the production saw the budget spiral to a reported $300 million and change. Critics were apathetic towards the Dceu’s stab at replicating the success of The Avengers and many fans were apoplectic at what Whedon had done to the franchise’s biggest names, and after landing with a thud, Warner Bros. tried to sweep it under the carpet and move forward.

WandaVision, the first series from Marvel Studios to launch on Disney+, will premiere on Jan. 15, 2021 on the streaming service. There was an anticipation that we’d see WandaVision as soon as December, but it appears that Disney+ is spacing out new product during the pandemic, particularly with the Christmas Day drop of Pixar’s Soul and the mid-December wrap-up of Mandalorian season 2.
Starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, WandaVision is a blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff (Olsen) and Vision (Bettany) — two super-powered beings living idealized suburban lives — begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems. Kat Dennings, Randall Park and Kathryn Hahn also star.
The events of WandaVision will take place after the events of Avengers: Endgame.

It wasn’t until Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that the Infinity Stones began to make their presence known, with only the Tesseract factoring into the first slate of movies. The cosmic MacGuffin was the driving force behind the plot of Captain America: The First Avenger before becoming a key component in Loki’s attempt to enslave the human race in The Avengers.
In The First Avenger, Red Skull attempted to harness the power of the Tesseract for his own gain, but a new fan theory is now claiming that the man once known as Johann Schmidt knew about all six of the Infinity Stones, but lacked the capabilities of gathering the whole set. After all, at the time, it was never confirmed that the Tesseract was the Space Stone, but Red Skull would have surely discovered its origins as he spent years trying to find it in the first place.

Well, it’s been a week now and I still haven’t got over it. Even the most chaotic Presidential Election in living memory hasn’t managed to distract me from the pressing melancholy – as absurd as it feels to say it out loud…we are no longer living on the same planet as Sean Connery.
It’s not that he was suddenly struck down in the prime of life (90 years of age is a good haul for anyone), it’s just that Connery, along with the rarified likes of Michael Caine and Clint Eastwood, carried an air of genuine immortality. He even played an immortal in Highlander and the fact that he was wearing a coat made of peacock feathers at the time, didn’t make it feel any less plausible.
Perhaps, like his aforementioned peers, it’s the fact that his vitality never withered away like so many...

I’m always skeptical when it comes to reboots. On the one hand they can be well justified and prove to be a success (Casino Royale, 2006) but on the odd occasion it can backfire and you find yourself walking the exact same path again (The Amazing Spider-man, 2012). There are several reboots in the pipeline, one of which I’m not too keen on, The Crow, which to me feels like an insult to the performance and memory of Brandon Lee. However, a reboot of 80s action-fantasy Highlander (1986) I’m well and truly behind.
Highlander has a special place in my heart, with its basic – if a little silly – premise. Fallen warriors who have been resurrected as immortals take part in “The Game”, where they must behead each other, until the last remaining two fight for “The Prize”. How can you not love that as a concept? A simple set up...

In June 1987, in an interview for The New York Times, Stanley Kubrick spoke glowingly about a series of Michelob beer commercials. “They’re just boy-girl, night-fun,” Kubrick praised, “leading up to pouring the beer, all in 30 seconds, beautifully edited and photographed. Economy of statement is not something that films are noted for.” That piece […]

If Chevy Chase wasn't such a jerk to director Chris Columbus, the 1990 Christmas movie Home Alone might not have become the beloved holiday classic we fondly look back on now. The film is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and Chicago Magazine put together an oral history that revealed a fascinating what-if scenario for its director.
Writer/producer John Hughes asked Columbus, fresh off the abysmal box office performance of a previous movie, if he wanted to direct National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, which Hughes wrote. Columbus recounts the story:
In 1989, I directed Heartbreak Hotel, and it was a disaster. It opened on a Friday, and by Wednesday it was only playing at two o’clock in the afternoon. Around that time, John Hughes sent me the script for Christmas Vacation. I love Christmas, so to do a Christmas comedy had been a dream. I went out to dinner with Chevy Chase [the movie’s star]. Known by the younger generation for his role as Voldemort in the Harry Potter film series, Ralph Fiennes has been gracing our stages and our screens since the mid-eighties. He was trained in the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, achieved prominence with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and first made a name in films with his role of Amon Goeth in Steven Spielberg’s Schlindler’s List in 1993. And since then he’s starred in a wide variety of films, with major pictures including the James Bond Series (starring as M), The Constant Gardener, The English Patient, and Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel.
Fiennes’ film work has ranged from thrillers (Spider) to animated Biblical epic (The Prince Of Egypt) to camp nostalgia (The Avengers) to romantic comedy (Maid in Manhattan) to historical drama (Sunshine). Oh – and in 2011, Fiennes also made his directorial debut with his film...

Joining the long list of recent remakes and reboots, Variety is reporting Fox has decided to move forward with plans to make a new League of Extraordinary Gentlemen film. Normally, I would be weary of a reboot of a film that was released so recently, but in this case, I'm all for it. Just give me something to help remove the bad memories I have from the disastrous 2003 Sean Connery movie, a film that, consequentially, would serve as Connery's last live action feature. "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" has always been a property full of potential. The series features a group of legendary Victorian-era literary heroes joining forces to combat evil. Created in 1999 by legendary comic writer Alan Moore (Watchmen, V for Vendetta), the League battled Moriarty (sworn enemy of Sherlock Holmes), aliens from "War of the Worlds," and experienced the fall of the Big Brother government (from "Nineteen Eighty Four...

After handing out the award for Best Picture last night, Sean Penn is back today in the secondm quick trailer for The Gunman, the latest thriller from Taken director Pierre Morel. Penn just happens to be getting some flack today for saying "Who gave this son of a bitch his green card?" when he handed an Oscar to Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, but the filmmaker knew it was a harmless joke. However, Penn certainly isn't messing around in what could be a whole new phase to his career. However, not every aging actor can follow the same trajectory as Liam Neeson did, though it's sometimes entertaining to see them try. Watch? Here's the quick new trailer for Pierre Morel's The Gunman from YouTube: You can still watch the first Us trailer for The Gunman right here. "It's the ones who aren't after you who do you in, in the end." It's been about a year and a half since we got a first look at Sean Penn in Pierre Morel's action thriller The Gunman, and for some reason the film has taken a long time to hit the big screen. But it's finally arriving next spring, and the first trailer has arrived, showcasing an impressive cast that also includes Javier Bardem, Idris Elba and more. In the film, Penn plays a Special Forces soldier who ends up getting targeted by his own colleagues. Basically, it's Sean Penn's turn to be an aging bad ass, and it seems to pack the same punch as the first Taken movie too. Remember that thing you loved from your childhood? It's coming back. We're not talking specifics here, we're talking everything.
New movies or TV shows revolving around everything from Scooby Doo to Ninja Turtles, Danger Mouse and Bananaman are on the horizon - you could accuse producers of running out of new ideas, but how long before they run out of old ideas?
Nostalgia can give you a warm and fuzzy feeling, but sometimes it isn't always a good thing. Digital Spy suggests 9 instances when looking back to the past resulted in a questionable present:
The Saint (1997)
A movie adaptation of popular TV series The Saint had been mooted for some time. It finally limped into cinemas in 1997 with Val Kilmer as Simon Templar - he was no Roger Moore, but let's face it, who is?

Sean Penn is poised for action in The Gunman. Open Road has announced February 20th, 2015 to be the release date for The Gunman, putting it in the same early year period that made Taken a hit. We head back to the 80s and 90s to look at eight famous battles between directors and studio executives over a movie's final cut...
If filmmaking is a compromise between art and commerce, then the final cut is often the point in the process where the tug-of-war between the two becomes the most intense. In their desire to make a film more profitable - often after feedback from preview screenings - studio executives will sometimes request re-edits or the shooting of additional scenes. And occasionally, when directors attempt to resist those changes for whatever reason, the resulting tension between director and studio can reach breaking point.
To illustrate the different ways these tussles over a film's final cut can play out, we're heading back to the 80s and 90s. In some instances, the films that emerged from the editing room were considered to be influential triumphs.

The idea of a female actor who usually plays virtuous or recognisably “good” roles on screen going bad for a movie role – whether lured by the higher pay off of nudity, or enticed by the added promise of awards – is nothing new, as we’ve already discussed in our run-down of Good Girls Gone Bad, but the same can’t necessarily be said for the other half of the gender divide.
Actors who play villains – or are born within the borders of the British Isles – seem to be typecast more than any other actor, largely because it takes a certain intangible something to make a truly memorable villain (like a snarling, upper-class British accent for instance,) and the effect of introducing a traditional villain to a heroic role can often be too jarring for the unfortunately limited mental capacity of some audiences.
The converse is also true – if you’re known for playing heroes,...

‘Bad Hair’ day at San Sebastian Film Festival: Venezuelan film wins Golden Shell (photo: Samuel Lange Zambrano in ‘Bad Hair’) Mariana Rondón’s Bad Hair / Pelo malo won the Golden Shell at the 2013 San Sebastian Film Festival, which wrapped up today, September 28, in northern Spain’s coastal city also known as Donostia (in Basque). The Venezuelan / Peruvian / German co-production tells the story of a nine-year-old boy (Samuel Lange Zambrano) with "bad hair," who decides to have his unruly curls molded pop-singer style (Justin Bieber’s?) for his yearbook picture. His mother (Samantha Castillo), however, is against it — the boy’s new hairdo is just not manly enough. Family conflicts ensue. The San Sebastian Film Festival’s Special Jury Prize went to newcomer Fernando Franco’s Wounded / La herida, a Spanish drama about a 30-year-old ambulance driver whose life falls to pieces as a consequence of her undiagnosed Borderline Personality Disorder.

Eric Bana stars in Deadfall as one of a pair of siblings (the other played by Olivia Wilde) who take ruthless measures to fend for themselves after a casino heist goes awry.
Digital Spy caught up with Bana last week to discuss playing an anti-hero, working with Wilde, and his memories of filming Star Trek with Jj Abrams.
What was it that appealed to you about Deadfall and your character, Addison?
"Zach [Dean]'s script was really intriguing, I wasn't really sure every ten pages what was going to happen next, so that really drew me in. And I just absolutely loved the character of Addison, I thought he'd written him in a way that made him very accessible to me. There was a really nasty sense of humour that pervaded through Addison that I just loved, and was one of the main reasons why I really wanted to attach myself straight away.

Holy millennium, Batman! We’re just two years away from the first decade of the 2000s, and Hollywood is looking to go out with a bang (especially if Y2K hits as bad as scientists as predicting). 1999 has the potential to be one of the most memorable years for movies ever. We’re getting the first Star Wars movie in almost 20 years, a much-needed Lethal Weapon sequel, and new Kubrick film!
I’ve been reading up on this weird movie called The Matrix, as well (which sounds just okay), and a ridiculous sounding film called Fight Club, but the one that really caught my eye is Wild Wild West. Everyone has been dying for another Will Smith vehicle after Men In Black, and it looks like we’re about the get the biggest and best one yet.

1998 promises to be a big year for Hollywood, with the eagerly anticipated Steven Spielberg World War II drama Saving Private Ryan on the way, a reboot of the classic monster movie Godzilla arriving in July, as well as a late summer big screen version of The Avengers, with Ralph Fiennes as John Steed, Uma Thurman as Emma Peel, and Sean Connery as Sir August de Wynter.
The winter months have typically been somewhat fallow as far as Hollywood is concerned. The big guns are slated for summer, those blockbusters and popcorn flicks we all love, and many films seen as Oscar contenders show up in the fall. The studio slate so far this year has not been totally top-notch, but there have been a few gems, including a couple that were little seen but are worth seeking out on cable or video cassette. In the aftermath of The Avengers, isn't the underrated 1999 superhero movie Mystery Men worth reassessing?
In 1999, between the body blow of Batman And Robin and the kiss of life that was X-Men, the superhero movie was temporarily revived by a loose adaptation of the Flaming Carrot Comics. It was called Mystery Men.
It was panned, lost a lot of money, and years later the lead actor announced that it had been a terrible movie and he was ashamed of it. All of this suggests that it should be pushed under the carpet and left to rot, but there are so many great things about Mystery Men that it really doesn’t deserve that fate, no matter what Ben Stiller says about it.
To start with the plot - at heart, Mystery Men is a film about all pulling together. It’s not a novel...

Reflecting on the past year's selections of films and performances leaves me more excited than I was this time last year after a lackluster 2011. Blockbusters such as The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers demonstrated that there is still energy and originality in these long-familiar characters. Just as 007 fans will argue that Sean Connery is the one and only James Bond -- personally I think Daniel Craig in Skyfall has picked up that gauntlet -- I will argue for director Christopher Nolan and actor Christian Bale truly owning the Batman franchise.
2012 also featured impressive performances from many new and veteran actors, and the standout portrayals were from stars who transformed into their characters so effortlessly. The slate of films worthy of recognition is quite substantial, so I've shared a short summary of what influenced my choices for 2012.

With the success of Skyfall in the past few months, grossing over $1bn. around the globe, the interest in Ian Fleming’s creation is clearly showing no signs of slowing down after all these years. And now it looks like the man himself will soon be making his presence felt on the small screen, with Sky Atlantic giving the green light to a four-part biopic, Fleming.
Variety are reporting that the rising young star Dominic Cooper (The Devil’s Double, Captain America: The First Avenger) has been cast in the titular lead.
And Deadline follow it up with a report saying that Annabelle Wallis (The Tudors, Pan Am) will be starring as Muriel Wright, a woman with whom the author had an affair, and who is thought by some to be the original inspiration for the renowned ‘Bond girl’.

The Official Best Picture and Best Director pages have been posted. I'm brainstorming some way to make the charts less static this year so you can enjoy returning to them whenever the mood strikes you. So now that the pages are up, you can vote on your choice of best (not your prediction) and read about the nominees. Let's spitball fun facts!
Box Office
You mean to tell me a sober drama about old age and death hasn't outgrossed The Avengers?
I believe Amour is the lowest grossing Best Picture nominee ever (with under $350,000 in the can at the Us box office as of this writing). At least for now! Box Office Mojo used to have before and after nomination box office gross charts for the Best Picture nominees of each year though I can't seem to find them now. When Seth McFarlane joked "breath of fresh air" after the well known list of nominees for Best Supporting Actor were read out at yesterday's Oscar nominations announcement, his remark could have been aimed at the whole bland list - in every category.
Regardless of the predictability we see each year (not a new phenomenon, by any means) and the safety of the nominations (that's not my argument here), surely the fact that last year's Cloud Atlas - one of the most bold, challenging and imaginative films of the 21st century - is an embarrassment to the Academy and what they stand for.
Cloud Atlas is proof that truly original, thought-provoking and intelligent blockbusters can be produced, and produced well. This is exactly the sort of work they...

In the box-office lull before the arrival The Hobbit next weekend, Skyfall returned to the number-one spot at the box office, becoming the first film since Avatar to lead the chart in its fifth week. It also became the highest grossing Sony release of all time. Not too shabby, Mr. Bond.
Skyfall topped the domestic rankings with an estimated $11.0 million (down a slim 34 percent from last weekend), which brings its North American total to a stunning $261.1 million. It’s difficult to adequately express how incredible — and somewhat inexplicable — Skyfall’s run has been. The former franchise high-point for the Bond series was Quantum of Solace,...

Sam Mendes's film posts $287m worldwide in first 10 days and has already made half Casino Royale's total before Us release
The latest James Bond film, Skyfall, is on course to be the series' highest-grossing film so far after breaking the UK seven-day box-office record and posting $287m (£180m) in its first 10 days across the globe.
The figures are all the more remarkable for Sam Mendes's film because the 23rd Bond adventure has not yet opened in the Us, the world's largest market, where it is due to arrive on 8 November. Nevertheless, Daniel Craig's third turn as 007 is already almost halfway to the $594m total posted by the British actor's debut, Casino Royale, in 2006 – the previous highest Bond gross.
Skyfall had made £37.2m in the UK in its first seven days – by Friday – to overtake previous record holder Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. Its...

After "Iron Man," Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, "The Avengers" and oh, you know, every other title that arrives every six months, comic-book movies are obviously still all the rage. But it wasn't always like that. In the early aughts there were plenty of misfires, with many of them coming from 20th Century Fox: "Daredevil," "Elektra," "Fantastic Four," "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer," and "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" were all mostly moneymakers, but were all generally reviled. The same applied to lesser-known titles adapted from comics like "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," which was also a Fox property based off a comic book series written by Alan Moore that was such a bad film it practically sent him to an early grave and hastened Sean Connery's retirement (of course, we're not even counting dreck like Warner Bros.' "Catwoman"). ...

Poor guy. Laremy reads a little from the E.T. screenplay, I read a few choice lines from "Fifty Shades of Grey" and we finally discuss the Fall Box-Office Draft a little closer as four movies that were drafted are finally in theaters. The summer is over and we're heading back to school. I'm trading in my Mojito Mix for a protractors as we speak.
Time will put summer 2012 in its historical context but, by and large, I'd call it a successful one. We may have lost a TomKat but we gained a Kimye. If that isn't a grand metaphor for this funny little thing we call life, I don't know what is.
As far as Fanboy movies are concerned, rarely have we been so well-serviced. Between "Avengers," "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Amazing Spider-Man," I can't think of a time when so many major ticket comic book heroes were in the spotlight. Following on from the awesome first full-length trailers that debuted at the start of the week for Skyfall, we’ve now got another brilliant new image of Daniel Craig and Javier Bardem in the upcoming twenty-third James Bond film.
Craig has been looking his usual brilliant self in all we’ve seen from him so far, and we got our first good look at Bardem with the release of the trailer, looking rather menacing with his new blond hair.
“In Skyfall, Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.”
Starring alongside them will be a fantastic supporting cast, headed up by Ralph Fiennes, Bérénice Marlohe, Naomie Harris, Albert Finney, Ben Whishaw, Helen McCrory, Ola Rapace, and Dame Judi Dench.

Fitting: After five or so years of “early” development, Ant-Man gets the go-ahead from Marvel Studios and, yet, is still nothing more than a series of questions. Who’s shrinking down? How will it fit with Edgar Wright‘s style? Most importantly, when does it come out?
The lattermost question may have been given its answer — well, sort of may have. Marvel’s co-president, Louis D’Esposito, told Collider (via /Film) that a wrap on The World’s End could, in theory, let Wright get… right down to shooting Ant-Man and, thus, let it be their “third film” in 2014. (Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy being the other two.)
Here was his exact quote on the matter:
“That might be an opportunity where we do a third film, depending on his schedule when he finishes World’s End. But he’s such a competent filmmaker; the script is in great shape.

Seeing as film is, without question, the superior medium, anytime a TV actor gets a big-screen role should be seen as their own success. A couple of these very instances have occurred today, with Deadline first reporting that Ryan Kwanten (True Blood) has snagged the headline role in Sex and Sunsets, a romantic picture that Jeremiah S. Chechik (that other film called The Avengers) will direct.
In writing the film, Megan Martin has adapted Tim Sandlin‘s novel of divided love and bizarre sights, which follows a dishwasher, Kelly Palamino, whose visual and aural hallucinations don’t get in the way of falling for Collette, a woman getting married that very day. Soon enough, he starts pursuing the newlywed, trying to prove that his bad reputation is nothing more than falsehood.

Having said that, one must take into account that Bel Ami, unlike the vast majority of the more successful movies at the UK box office, has an “adult” theme. In fact, the Robert Pattinson film earned a “15″ certificate...
