This post contains spoilers for the "Stargate" franchise.
Roland Emmerich's 1994 sci-fi drama "Stargate" posits an intriguing premise. An ancient ring-shaped device excavated during an archaeological expedition in Giza turns out to be a two-way portal connecting similar devices on distant plants, using a wormhole as a means to transport people. The film's elaborate plot gradually reveals that extraterrestrial beings enslaved parts of the human civilization, and used the Stargate device to trap them in their home planets across the galaxy. Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner's beloved series "Stargate Sg-1" builds its foundation on the film's lore, expanding a dystopian world where military organizations on Earth use the Stargate to free the enslaved humans and protect the planet from a vicious alien race known as the Goa'uld.

On Halloween of 2022, it was announced that Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller would be developing a Friday the 13th series called Crystal Lake for A24 and the Peacock streaming service. The lengthy writers strike slowed down the progress of the show – but now that the strike is over, Crystal Lake is probably getting back on track, and since Friday the 13th has come back around on the calendar, we thought this would be a good time for us to share Everything We Know About Crystal Lake!
May 2024 Update: Well, we’re back to the drawing board, because A24 has decided to “go a different way” with the material, moving ahead with Crystal Lake without the involvement of Bryan Fuller. The search for a new showrunner is underway. So for right now, it could be said that we don’t know anything about what Crystal Lake will be. We only have an...

In director Roland Emmerich's 1994 sci-fi thriller "Stargate," a mysterious metal ring, about nine feet wide, is discovered in the remote ruins of Egypt. The ring is found to be a mysterious technology that, when arranged properly, can open a doorway to a distant planet. Actors like James Spader and Kurt Russell pass through the Stargate and find themselves on a distant alien world called Abydos. Everything in Abydos looks like ancient Egypt, and we soon learn that the Abydosians once used the Stargate to visit Earth, enslave humans, and set up ancient Egyptian culture. The villain of the film is Ra (Jaye Davidson), an ancient alien who uses human bodies to extend his life.
There's a lot of cool design and slick special effects in "Stargate," but the alien mythology isn't explored thoroughly enough. Like most of Emmerich's films, it makes big swings visually yet never emerges from the realm of corny melodrama.

Louis Gossett Jr., the tough guy with a sensitive side who won an Oscar for his portrayal of a steely sergeant in An Officer and a Gentleman and an Emmy for his performance as a compassionate slave in the landmark miniseries Roots, has died. He was 87.
Gossett’s nephew told the Associated Press that the actor died Thursday night in Santa Monica. The cause of death is unknown, but Gossett announced in 2010 that he had prostate cancer.
With his sleek, bald pate and athlete’s physique, Gossett was intimidating in a wide array of no-nonsense roles, most notably in Taylor Hackford’s Officer and a Gentleman (1982), where as Gunnery Sgt. Emil Foley he rides Richard Gere’s character mercilessly (but for his own good) at an officer candidate school and gets into a memorable martial arts fight.
He was the second Black man to win an acting Oscar, following Sidney Poitier in 1964.

Patience is a virtue, especially if you're a sci-fi fan.
When it comes to genre TV, science fiction and sci-fi adjacent programs are often saved when unceremoniously dumped by a network.
Jericho, Lucifer, The Expanse, and Stargate Sg-1 all found new life after cancellation. Today, Snowpiercer joins that list.
AMC Networks announced today that it has acquired the exclusive U.S. linear and streaming rights to all four seasons of the post-apocalyptic drama series Snowpiercer.
The first three seasons of the critically acclaimed drama will stream on AMC+ later this year, leading up to the series’ season four premiere on AMC and AMC+ in early 2025.
This should come as excellent news for TV Fanatics, as the show always drove discussion and fueled passionate viewers with much to say.

Come, sit, and hear sad stories of what it was like to be a young British millennial nerd. The nineties were, in many ways, a dark age for British science fiction. Doctor Who was gone, apart from one Children in Need crossover with EastEnders – Dimensions in Time in 1993 – and an American co-produced movie simply called “Doctor Who” (which we would all pretend to hate while treasuring our VHS recording and commemorative Radio Times issue).
Over the pond, TV sci-fi was in the middle of a golden age, with three Star Trek series, Babylon 5, Farscape, The X-Files and Stargate Sg-1 only marking the tip of a science fictional iceberg. But British fans could only watch these episodes months or even years after the fact, particularly if they had only access to terrestrial television, and were forced to paw through magazines and websites for reviews and plot summaries to sate their hunger.

We finally got a Halo live-action series, and while fans have mixed feelings about the series, no one can deny the brilliant action and cast in the Paramount+ series. Halo the series is set in the 26th century and will be centered on the Master Chief, the world’s deadliest weapon and their greatest hope in the war with the Covenant (an alien race). While protecting a rebel group from the Covenant on planet Madrigal, Master Chief saves Kwan and also touches an object that seems to unlock his buried memories, and also makes him want to protect Kwan, even if it means going against him the orders given to him by the Unsc. Star Trek is one of best and most well-known science fiction franchises of all time, so it’s no surprise that it’s had a huge influence on the rest of the genre. From other space-faring adventures to distant worlds to straight up parodies of the Enterprise and its crew, there are plenty of shows and movies that owe a bit to Gene Roddenberry‘s creation.
This is not a list of every single show or film that has been inspired by Star Trek because that list would cover a pretty good proportion of sci-fi on screen since 1966. But if you want to watch something Star Trek-adjacent, we’ve picked out 10 of our favorite shows and movies that were, to a greater or lesser degree, inspired by Star Trek.

What if there was no tomorrow? That's an existential question posed not only by the 2014 time loop film "Edge of Tomorrow," but also by its sequel's complicated status following the original's successful release. Ever since 2015, director Doug Liman and stars Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt have spoken at various times about a sequel movie getting off the ground. At one point, Liman had said that the sequel would be entitled "Live Die Repeat and Repeat" (referencing the movie's ersatz title/subtitle) and that the film's co-writer Christopher McQuarrie would also return. He even claimed that the concept was so good that "it's gonna revolutionize how people make sequels."
Alas, a myriad of obstacles have gotten in the way in the intervening years between that statement and now, with Blunt saying in August 2023 that she's still interested in making a sequel, but doesn't know when or how it could happen. Given the project's stalled status,...

Will The Marvels reverse Marvel’s recent run of meh?
Not according to the early critic reviews. The latest Marvel Cinematic Universe title is getting rather mediocre notices with a just-out-of-the-gate Rotten Tomatoes score in the mid-50s, which would make it one of the weakest MCU titles ever.
But what’s interesting is that many reactions to The Marvels are also intensely polarized — with some insisting the film is delightful fun while others are calling the movie “abject misery,” “turgidly mindless,” and “a new low” for Marvel. In general, the more traditional news outlets tend to skew against the film (Hollywood Reporter‘s review excluded) while some of the more fan-focused entertainment sites are much more positive. Overall, it seems like the more one has invested in watching all the previous MCU movies and TV shows, the more likely they are to dig The Marvels — and understand it.

TV drama writers obsess over audience engagement, with a huge emphasis on personal stakes for their characters. The biggest of these is the prospect of death. But 70+ years of TV have taught us that mortality is rare for characters played by a show's stars. So, when actors leave a show or the decision is made to cut a character, writers see a golden opportunity to play the ultimate stakes game by going terminal.
It's safe to say character departures always upset a segment of a show's audience, however small. But not all such deaths are created equal. Some generate a wave of complaints, others a tsunami of outrage. It's the deaths of characters we love or love to hate, and those especially shocking or egregious, that drive fans to write all-caps messages, accompanied by many exclamation points, in fanzines, letter columns, and social media.
Here are 14 of the most controversial of the controversial.

This article contains spoilers for the latest episode of "Ahsoka."
You just never know who's going to show up in a galaxy far, far away these days. Whether it's "Cousin" Richie from "The Bear" (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) popping in to assist Cassian Andor on the Aldhani heist on "Andor" or Dr. John "J.D." Dorian from "Scrubs" (Zach Braff) playing the "Star Wars" equivalent of a Maga supporter on "Obi-Wan Kenobi," the supporting cast of the "Star Wars" franchise is an eclectic collection of top-of-the-line character actors and fan-favorites. Sometimes, however, you might not even recognize them, as they're buried under layers of makeup or wearing a helmet the entire time. That was exactly the case on the latest episode of "Ahsoka."
Titled "Far, Far Away," the episode follows those aboard the Eye of Scion to Peridea, the extra-galactic homeworld of the Dathomiri and a planet so ancient it had fallen into myth.

Actor Julian Sands specific cause of death may never be officially determined, according to the San Bernardino County Coroner.
A spokesperson for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department told multiple media outlets that the coroner’s conclusion regarding the cause of Sands’ passing is “undetermined due to the condition of the body and this is common when dealing with cases of this type.” CNN reported that the spokesperson also added, “This is the final determination.”
About a month ago, the San Bernardino County Sheriffs office confirmed that the human remains had been found in a remote wilderness area by hikers and were, indeed, those of the actor.
At the time, the Sheriff’s office issued a statement that said in part, “On Saturday, June 24, 2023, at about 10:00 a.m., civilian hikers contacted the Fontana Sheriff’s Station after they discovered human remains in the Mount Baldy wilderness. Fontana Station deputies,...

After six months of searching, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s office confirmed today that the human remains found earlier this week by hikers were, indeed, those of actor Julian Sands. He had been missing since mid-January.
The statement (read it below) says his cause of death is still pending, but Sands was an experienced hiker who loved the outdoors.
The positive identification comes less than a week after Sands’ family issued their first statement on the matter, saying they are “deeply grateful to the search teams and coordinators who have worked tirelessly to find Julian.”
Of the actor himself — known for his roles in The Killing Fields, A Room with a View, Leaving Las Vegas, Warlock, Arachnophobia, Boxing Helena, 24, Smallville and Banshee — the family statement said, “We continue to hold Julian in our hearts, with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts,...

A Friday the 13th TV series called Crystal Lake is coming our way from Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller, Friday the 13th franchise rights holders Victor Miller and Rob Barsamian (plus Miller’s lawyer Marc Toberoff), A24, and the Peacock streaming service. Unfortunately, any progress the show was making has been put on hold during the writers strike – but earlier this year, Fuller assembled a writers room that spent six weeks brainstorming ideas and breaking down the scripts that will make up the first season of the series. Two of the writers in that room were author Tananarive Due, who has written multiple novels over the last thirty years and executive produced Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror, and her husband Steven Barnes, who is also an author and has also contributed scripts to shows like Stargate Sg-1, The Outer Limits, and the ’80s version of The Twilight Zone. First announced back in 2021, news of the real-time tactics game Stargate: Timekeepers has been thin on the ground since the first gameplay footage dropped in May 2022 to coincide with the Stargate Sg-1 25th Anniversary.
A spokesman for publisher Slitherine Games delivered an update on April 13, 2023, that went unnoticed by everyone except for French fansite Stargate-Fusion.com, so kudos to them.
“We are planning to release the game in July, this is the current play, the beta for the game will start around May, we don’t know if beginning of May or late May.
“This is a kind of different beta compared to any game we've done in the past because Stargate is a scenario-based, mission-based, narrative-driven kind of game so before we start the beta we have to make sure the missions are all there, they all work, they have a progression [and] it’s all working properly.

For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit the ambitious small screen project “Roger Corman Presents,” which aired from 1995 through 1999 on Showtime.
Not many remember this, but back in the nineties, the cable network Showtime was extremely centered on science fiction and horror genre fare. They were the original launch pads for “Stargate Sg-1” and “Poltergeist: The Legacy” before they became syndication mainstays. Hell, even their marketing was catered to the science fiction and horror aesthetic.
Like Cinemax, Showtime sought to work out distribution deals while releasing their own original films for primetime and late night slots. While Cinemax and HBO worked with Stan Winston, Showtime collaborated with the one and only Roger Corman. With him and his studio Concorde Pictures, they would produce a series of low budget films that would air over the course of two seasons. Are you a fan of Stargate Sg-1 and love base-building exploration games? Exogate Initiative by French developer Xeno Bits might be the game you've been waiting for.
A clear homage to the series we love (but legally distinct in case any lawyers are reading), Exogate Initiative is a management sim that tasks you with building the titular Exogate, maintaining your very own Stargate Command, and sending teams on away missions to unknown corners of the universe.
It’s packed with Stargate Sg-1 easter eggs and in-jokes, and you’ll see a few of them on our 30-minute playthrough.
(Look out for “I'm Rudy Cobb – with two Bs” at 1:09.)
One of the devs told the Exogate Initiative Discord:
While we're certainly inspired by Stargate, we still have to stand on our own. Hopefully the launch triggers both those moments of nostalgia and also those moments of “Oh, this is a cool new thing they're doing.

The venerable Deadline reports that a new Stargate series and a new movie/s are currently being discussed at Amazon, with the movie “likely going first.”
It’s not a huge surprise to learn that Stargate (along with Robocop) is a priority for Amazon now that the $8.5 billion MGM purchase has bedded in – they were on the list mooted by industry insider Jeff Snider back in March – but this is the first time one of the major news sites has weighed in.
What is new is the suggestion that it could open with a new movie, which totally makes sense. After all, Amazon recently found its cinema legs with the $100 million release of Creed III, and a new blockbuster Stargate movie would be a fantastic way to kick off a new series in style. That’d hopefully give a new Stargate series a much better chance of survival than so...

Syfy’s newest original hit series The Ark has been renewed for a second season. Created by Dean Devlin, The Ark takes place 100 years in the future when planetary colonization missions have begun as a necessity to help secure the survival of the human race.
The first of these missions on a spacecraft known as Ark One encounters a catastrophic event causing massive destruction and loss of life.
With more than a year left to go before reaching their target planet, a lack of life-sustaining supplies and loss of leadership, the remaining crew must become the best versions of themselves to stay on course and survive.
Co-Showrunners/Executive Producers Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner said in a statement, "We couldn’t be more excited to get back into space with the crew of the Ark. Syfy continues to be an amazing partner and home for this series.

While some fans will never give up hope for an official Lego Stargate set (check out this Stargate Sg-1 Gateroom on Lego Ideas), German company BlueBrixx is picking up the slack.
According to our pals at GateWorld, BlueBrixx is currently in the design phase for their Stargate series of brick-building kits, and subject to licensing approvals from MGM, they could be on sale by 2024.
The bricks used by BlueBrixx are Lego-compatible.
BlueBrixx, who also manufacture an officially licensed range of Star Trek ships, previously nailed their Stargate fandom colors to the mast with the familiar-looking 3,703-piece “Space freighter E.S.S. Levitarus.”
Spot the difference: USS Daedalus vs the BlueBrixx E.S.S. Levitarus.
They've also released an off-brand Battlestar Galactica, U.S.C.S.S. Nostromo from Alien (1979), the cab from Fifth Element (1997), and numerous other science fiction stalwarts.
Very naughty, but we back it.

Exclusive: Jorge Vargas (‘Snowpiercer’), Tanaya Beatty (‘Yellowstone,’), and Skywalker Hughes (‘Joe Pickett’) are rounding out the previously announced cast of Academy Award winner Andrew Stanton’s In The Blink of an Eye starring Kate McKinnon, Rashida Jones, and Daveed Diggs. Principal photography has now commenced in British Columbia.
The movie follows three storylines, spanning thousands of years, intersect and reflect on hope, connection and the circle of life. Jared Ian Goldman (Ingrid Goes West, ‘Russian Doll’) produces the pic written and executive produced by Colby Day (Spaceman).
“From the first read I knew Colby Day’s script was special,” said Stanton, “and it has only become more rarified of a project as our team has formed. What a privilege to have such an ideal cast and crew realize this beautiful story.”
“Andrew is a visionary artist whose unique gifts as a storyteller shine in this beautiful film,” added Searchlight Presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum.

Until the great gears at Amazon start turning and give us a new Stargate series, we’ll have to make do with the classics. Fortunately, Stargate Sg-1 gave us 10 seasons, two spin-offs (three if you count Stargate Infinity... which you don’t), and two direct-to-home movies (three if you count Stargate Origins... which you don’t).
Unfortunately, unless you still have your treasured DVD box set and still have a DVD player in 2023, it can be a full-time job trying to work out where to stream Stargate Sg-1.
Luckily it’s my full-time job. You’re welcome.
Stargate Sg-1 on Comet TV (US Only)
Stargate Sg-1 is currently airing on Comet TV in the US. Comet TV’s business model was initially based on the MGM back catalog, but don‘t be surprised if this changes as Amazon tidies up the licensing agreements it inherited.
