Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone will come to Broadway in the new comedy, The Roommate, by Jen Silverman.
The play, directed by Jack O’Brien, will begin performances on Aug. 29, with an official opening night on Sept. 12, at the Booth Theatre. This marks LuPone’s first return to the stage after giving up her Actors’ Equity membership after the run of Company ended in 2022. Farrow was last on Broadway in 2014, in the A.R. Gurney play Love Letters.
“It’s always a big decision to return to the stage, and I certainly had no intention of being back on Broadway so fast. But when I read the play and heard Mia was attached, it became the easiest decision of my life. I’ve always been a fan of Mia’s work and she is a treasured friend. We’re going to have a blast,” LuPone said.

If one thinks of pop music and its influence in the world, it is difficult to look past an artist like Madonna. In many ways, the iconic singer was a pioneer in the genre and is associated with some of the most evergreen songs that have become cult classics over the years. In addition to her charismatic personality, Madonna has also had a colorful personal life when it comes to her various romances.
Madonna in her hit single Vogue
The Vogue crooner has been married to A-list Hollywood celebrities like Sean Penn and Guy Ritchie, and has also been involved in a short relationship with Warren Beatty with whom she co-starred with in Dick Tracy. While the pop star was pretty open and candid when talking about Beatty in The Howard Stern Show, she refrained from getting too personal when pushed to comment on her s*x life with the actor.

Musical theater legend Patti LuPone may have sung her last show.
“I don’t know if I’ll ever do another Broadway musical cause I just don’t think they’re very good right now. They’re not writing for me,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I don’t know if I want to do eight shows a week in a Broadway musical, but I would do a play in a heartbeat.”
From the age of 4, she knew she wanted to be on Broadway. A graduate of Juilliard, she won her first Tony for Evita in 1980, a second for her performance as Madame Rose in the 2008 revival of Gypsy and a third for playing Joanne in the 2022 revival of Company. Christopher Durang, one of American’s most acclaimed and accomplished playwrights whose works like Beyond Therapy, Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You and the Tony-winning Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike were as incisive as they were absurdly comic, died Tuesday night at his home in Pipersville, Pa., in Bucks County. He was 75.
His agent, Patrick Herold, confirmed that Durang died as a result complications of his 2016 diagnosis with logopenic primary progressive aphasia (Ppa), a form of Alzheimer’s disease that impedes the ability to process language. He remained out of the public spotlight since his condition was made public in 2022. In February, New York’s Dramatists Guild announced that the playwright would receive its 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award on May 6, placing Durang on a prestigious roster alongside such past awardees as John Guare, Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Miller.

Ari Aster’s fourth feature as a director is officially a go at A24. Aster is set to direct “Eddington” with A24 both financing and producing.
The film will reunite Aster with his “Beau Is Afraid” star Joaquin Phoenix alongside a cast that also includes Pedro Pascal, newly minted Oscar winner Emma Stone, “Yellowstone” star Luke Grimes, as well as Austin Butler, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, and Clifton Collins Jr.
Production kicks off on “Eddington” this week.
The official logline says only that “Eddington” follows a small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations. There have been rumors that the film is a Western set during the pandemic in which a couple runs out of gas in the small town of Eddington and are greeted warmly, only for the town to turn nightmarish by nightfall.

Ari Aster has assembled an all-star cast for his next film, “Eddington,” recruiting Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Pedro Pascal, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward and Clifton Collins Jr.
A24 is financing and producing the movie, which — based on Aster’s track record — we can only assume will give us nightmares. Plot details are kept under wraps besides the fact that the film “follows a small-town New Mexico sheriff with higher aspirations.”
“Eddington” starts production this week, with Aster writing, directing and producing alongside Lars Knudsen under their Square Peg banner. Two-time Academy Award nominee Darius Khondji is the director of photography.
“Eddington” marks the sixth collaboration between Square Peg and A24, which produced and distributed Aster’s previous three films — “Hereditary,” “Midsommar” and “Beau Is Afraid” — as well as “Dream Scenario” and the upcoming “Death of a Unicorn.”

Focus Features has bought international rights to Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist,” starring Adrien Brody, Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce and Joe Alwyn, Variety has learned.
Corbet, who sits on the Berlinale jury, penned the film with Mona Fastvold (“The World to Come”), a Norwegian filmmaker who is also his wife. The film charts 30 years in the lives of visionary architect László Toth and his wife, Erzsébet, who flee post-war Europe in 1947 and witness the birth of modern America. László initially endures poverty and indignity, but the architect’s genius soon catches the attention of charming industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren, whose dark influence threatens to destroy everything László and his wife have built.
The cast is completed by Raffey Cassidy (“White Noise”), Isaach De Bankolé (“Casino Royale”), Alessandro Nivola (“The Many Saints of Newark”), Stacy Martin (“Nymphomaniac Vol I”), Emma Laird (“Mayor of Kingstown”), Jonathan Hyde (“Titanic”) and Peter Polycarpou...

On Dec. 4, 1997, Steven Spielberg unveiled historical drama Amistad at its premiere in Washington, D.C. The film went on to gross $44 million and nab four Oscar nominations at the 70th Academy Awards, including for cinematography, score, costume design and supporting actor for Anthony Hopkins’ role. The Hollywood Reporter’s original review is below:
DreamWorks Skg’s Amistad is a holiday feast: Namely it is an ambitious story layout teeming with historical significance, packed with a sterling-set cast and dished up with the finest technical crockery. But like most holiday tables, after everything gets passed around for the first time, nothing much goes together.
Alas, this personal/legalistic story about 53 Africans who broke free of their shackles while aboard the Spanish slave ship La Amistad keeps afloat mainly on its kind-spirited intentions rather than the narrative craftsmanship of the vessel itself.

Theaters across the UK were bathed in blue light Thursday evening, in tribute to the late impresario Bill Kenwright.
Following the death of Kenwright, one of the country’s leading theater producers and mentor to hundreds in the industry, theaters in his home city of Liverpool lit up in blue to pay tribute to his other great love, Everton Football Club, where he served as chairman for over two decades.
The BBC reported that theaters paid tribute in other cities across the UK, including Darlington, London, Blackpool, Brighton and Sheffield.

It’s December in Mexico City in “El Sabor de la Navidad,” where fake Santas, queso relleno and karaoke machines are all just smoke and mirrors covering over the true meaning of Christmas. Helmed by Alejandro Lozano, this endearing Spanish-language Christmas film intertwines three separate stories of families and friends grappling between tradition and progression, trying to discern which is most important.
Ahead of the film’s global premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, producers Salma Hayek Pinault and Jose Tamez spoke with Variety about Ventanarosa, their production company, which is behind the film, creating films for Spanish-speaking audiences and their latest joint endeavor.

Warner Bros Discovery is reportedly negotiating to sell around half of the well-known Warner studio’s film and TV music-publishing assets for approximately $500 million.
As per Variety, the rights are “slightly less than half” of the catalogue, with a price of around $500 million. The assets are likely to go to a major label, with Sony said to be in the lead.
The catalogue is believed to include music from films such as ‘Purple Rain’, ‘Evita’, ‘Sweeney Todd’, ‘Rent’, several ‘Batman’ films and many more titles, as well as songs from films such as ‘As Time Goes By’ from ‘Casablanca’.
Top attorney Allen Grubman will be overseeing the deal for Warner Discovery CEO David Zaslav. Variety quoted observers as saying that many of the company’s assets are more than a half-century old and are “declining” in value and are difficult to exploit. The catalogue is currently under a multi-year administration deal with Universal Music Publishing.

Warner Bros. Discovery is in negotiations to sell about half of its film and TV music-publishing assets for an estimated price tag of $500 million, Hits and Variety report.
It’s uncertain for now which of Warner studio’s assets are being sold, but music from films such as Casablanca, Purple Rain, Evita, Sweeney Todd, Rent, and the Batman franchise are rumored to be included in the deal. Sony is reportedly the frontrunner to acquire the rights.
Some business insiders have noted that it would be a smart business move for Warner Bros. Discovery to sell right now and help pay off their $49.5 billion debt while the music catalog market is booming. But on the other hand, others observers have noted that these assets are “declining” in value and would have little opportunity to be put to good use, as many are upwards of 50 years old and no longer feel relevant in current pop culture.

After pulling in a decent, if unimpressive, showing of $9 million in Thursday previews it looks like The Flash will be another miss for the Dceu as it is tracking, as of right now, to open with just $64 million (per Deadline). To put that into perspective, Black Adam, a movie that was deemed a pretty substantial bomb, opened with $67 million back in October.
There is no sugar coating it, that number is pretty bad for what is a tent pole sized summer super hero movie. I get that The Flash is a deep roster super hero, but with a budget that is rumored to be well over $200 million, that opening just won’t cut it. The question is what tanked this release? I know many people are taking a stand against Ezra Miller in the wake of the myriad of allegations against the films star, but it is also the fact...

One of the things we love most about the dark Showtime series “Yellowjackets” is all the fantastic ’90s music. Half of the show takes place in 1996, when high school girls’ soccer team crash lands in the wilderness and half is set 25 years later, with the still traumatized adult survivors.
Season 2 features an exclusive track by Florence + the Machine, an eerie cover of No Doubt’s “Just a Girl,” Sharon Van Etten’s “Seventeen,” and such ’90s feminist icons as Tori Amos.
And of course, we love the kind of creepy main title theme, “No Return,” by Craig Wedren and Anna Waronker. The opening credits from Season 1 teased some of the things we would see unfold, and the updated Season 2 credits sequence also gives us hints at what we’ll see in upcoming episodes.

[Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for Yellowjackets, Season 2 Episode 8, “It Chooses.”]
After a riveting first season filled with sonic callbacks to the ’90s, Season 2 of Showtime’s Yellowjackets kicked off with a similarly wistful tone, thanks to the new trailer, spotlighting Florence and the Machine’s cover of No Doubt’s “Just a Girl.”
Season 1 of the series took viewers back to 1996 when a young group of soccer players survives a plane crash and the aftermath forced the characters to deal with a string of psychologically unfortunate events. Considering when the story starts, music from the era is paramount to the series. So far, we’ve heard everything from Portishead’s “Glory Box” to “Rump Shaker” by Wreckx-n-Effect in the series, with Season 2 promising to keep that same energy while jumping in between timelines.

Exclusive: King Charles III heaped royal praise on Andrew Lloyd Webber when he first heard the composer play a piano version of the coronation anthem, telling the peer that the music gave him “goosebumps and tears.”
The anthem, titled Make A Joyful Noise, was just performed in all its glory during today’s Coronation service at Westminster Abbey, as it was broadcasted and streamed to millions around the world.
Lloyd Webber revealed the King’s thoughts to us after he’d given a hush-hush preview of the anthem’s recording. He added he felt “humbled and moved” by the monarch’s “kind words.”
The musical theatre giant was specially commissioned to compose the anthem for their majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla. “I mean, he could have said that he hated it and I would have had to have started it all over again,” Lloyd Webber joked.

This post contains spoilers for "Yellowjackets," season 2, episode 5, "Two Truths and a Lie."
Sure, Misty Quigley has been known to drug and kidnap people on Showtime's "Yellowjackets," but we all need a friend -- which is what makes it so sad to see how Misty's first true friendship plays out in season 2. As always, there are two Mistys this season: the one in the present, played by Christina Ricci, and the one in the past, played by Samantha Hanratty. Both Mistys have had friendships of convenience with the other Yellowjackets, but they've shown signs of an improved social life in recent weeks; present-day Misty has buddied up with Elijah Wood's new character, Walter, while past Misty has struck up a genuine friendship with Crystal (Nuha Jes Izman).
While stranded in the Canadian wilderness, Misty and Crystal bonded over show tunes, performing one from the Andrew Lloyd Weber musical "Evita.

Generationally wealthy royals: they're just like us!
Queen Elizabeth II's favorite movie was reportedly Mike Hodges' gloriously campy "Flash Gordon." Her son, King Charles, is apparently a fan of morose singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. When Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud isn't ordering the mutilation of journalists, he evidently enjoys pro wrestling.
Entertainment is essential. It's what gets us through the drudgery of day-to-day life, and even the most monstrous people who've ever existed require this escapist outlet. Adolf Hitler was a cinephile. So was Joseph Stalin. Donald Trump reportedly loves Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Evita."
King Abdullah II of Jordan is no exception. In 2002, the first child of King Hussein visited Hollywood, and, keen on meeting Steven Spielberg, visited the set of "Catch Me If You Can." He was also a fan of "Shrek," which prompted Jeffrey Katzenberg to give Abdullah II a tour of DreamWorks Animation...

Brace yourself for a broken record.
How can this show keep getting better and better when it's so good already? On Schmigadoon! Season 2 Episode 5, the hits start right off the bat, and they just keep coming.
Everyone on screen and behind the scenes is a master of their craft. It's that simple, folks!
Tituss Burgess gives us a sinister Sweeney-esque recap of where we're at with our various plotlines, and even though he's fantastic here, it can't compare to his big number that comes a little later in the episode.
Melissa has truly come into her own, and Cecily Strong is there right along with her.
Dropping the Funny Girl costume (and schtick), Strong goes full-on torch singer with "My Turn Now," an homage to the magnificent "Maybe This Time" from Cabaret.
Vocally, she's never sounded better, which a strong belt and confident mixed voice that soars. No wonder the audience loves her!

Madonna has dated quite a few celebrities during her long tenure in the spotlight. The multi-platinum artist once hoped to add Antonio Banderas to her history of boyfriends. But Banderas refused to reciprocate the singer’s feelings out of fear.

Madonna has always been open about the intense crush she had over actor Antonio Banderas. But Banderas was married at the time when she pursued him at a party. In the Madonna documentary Madonna: Truth or Dare, she shared her disappointment in Banderas’ newly discovered relationship status.
A few years later, Madonna would find herself working alongside Banderas in her passion project Evita. By then, Banderas was married to his second wife Melanie Griffith. But even as time passed, Griffith claimed that Madonna’s crush on Banderas was as strong as ever.

Broadway legend Patti LuPone has claimed she was snubbed from starring in Apple TV Plus’s Schmigadoon! because she was “too old”.
Currently in its second season, the musical series stars Keegan-Michael Key and Cecily Strong as a backpacking couple who stumble upon a town living in a 1940s musical and learn they can’t escape until they find true love.
While the absurdist show features several well-known singing sensations, including Kristin Chenoweth, Alan Cumming, Ariana DeBose, and Jane Krakowski, the 74-year-old Tony winner LuPone said she was denied a part due to her age.
“I wanted to be in Schmigadoon!, and I was too old,” LuPone told Mashable in a recent interview.
When asked to clarify what she meant, she responded: “Exactly what I said. We reached out to them and said I want to be in Schmigadoon!. They said, ‘Sorry. You’re too old.’”

"Yellowjackets" spoilers follow.
We first got hints that Misty was a fan of musicals in season 1 of "Yellowjackets" when she listened to the "Overture" and "The Music of the Night" from "The Phantom of the Opera." She also teased Nat by listening to "Mr. Mistoffelees" from "Cats" while driving. In season 2, we discover that Misty's relationship with musicals has a lot to do with Crystal, a theatre nerd who also survived the plane crash.
Walter, the other half of her detective duo, also enjoys musicals. During their road trip to find the cult, Walter gives Misty a set of cassette tapes that include "Singin' in the Rain," "The Wizard of Oz," "Les Miserables," "Rent," and more. Misty dismisses "Starlight Express" before she turns on "Rainbow Tour" from "Evita": "Oh, let's tell the story of Cinderella, except every character's a train? Ugh." In flashbacks, we see that she and Crystal...

Now that we've recovered from yet another bleak visual set to a Tori Amos song, "Yellowjackets" season 2 episode 4 picks up in 1996. Tai's sleepwalking is continually sending her to trees with the symbol carved into them, but she's still claiming she has no recollection of doing it or why. "Something in you knows that these trees are here," says Van. As one of Lottie's disciples, Van wants Taissa to at least talk to her about what's going on, but Tai firmly puts her foot down. Always the logical one, that Taissa. Van has been keeping maps of all of the places Taissa has taken her while sleepwalking, trying to find a pattern. It's clear that a rift is forming between the two, solely based on whether or not they believe in Lottie's so-called "powers." It's only a matter of time before the rest of the team follows suit.

Andrew Lloyd Weber has long been known as the king of Broadway with his mega-hits Evita, Cats and Jesus Christ Superstar – just to name a few. Now, he’s back with a reinterpretation of a fairy tale classic in Bad Cinderella, an unexpectedly raucous and sexy second act for Llyod Webber.
In this version, anti-heroes Cinderalla (Linedy Genao) has a secret friendship with Prince Sebastian (Jordon Dobson). Sebastian becomes the heir apparent after his brother Prince Charming goes missing. Cinderella decides to let her feelings be known at the inevitable ball, but of course, things don’t play out quite as expected. Though Bad Cinderella has moments of subversive fun, it too often reverts back to cliche instead of going for something braver.
Now playing at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway. Get tickets here!
