Dakota Johnson is hopping in a cab to distance herself from the Madame Web fallout for Christy Hall’s upcoming drama Daddio. Setting a destination for theaters on June 28, Daddio stars Johnson and Sean Penn in a character-driven feature about human connectivity and appreciating life’s intricate events that lead to significant changes. The highly anticipated film, written and directed by Christy Hall in her feature directorial debut, received an enthusiastic response and critical praise following its premieres at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival and Toronto International Film Festival.
Here’s the official synopsis for Daddio courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics:
Daddio celebrates the power found in those rare moments of pure human connection, even with the most unlikely person. This highly contained, yet kinetic character-study – encapsulated in one single cab ride – explores the complexities inherent to the secrets we keep, particularly the ones locked away on our phones. Last year, all four acting Oscars were taken home by first-time nominees. Michelle Yeoh (Best Actress), Jamie Lee Curtis (Best Supporting Actress), and Ke Huy Quan (Best Supporting Actor) all won for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” while Brendan Fraser claimed Best Actor for “The Whale.” This was a historical achievement as the last time this happened was back in 2006 when Philip Seymour Hoffman (Best Actor for “Capote”), Reese Witherspoon (Best Actress for “Walk the Line”), George Clooney (Best Supporting Actor “Syriana”), and Rachel Weisz (Best Supporting Actress for “The Constant Gardener”) all won on their first nominations.
But while it’s unlikely for all four acting categories to go to newbies, what about each individual acting category? Well, we’ve broken down each acting category and examined every acting winner of the last 20 years to see which category is most likely to award newbies and which is most reluctant to.

In the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, 88 films have each received nominations for both Best Actor and Best Actress. Although there have been 19 cases of two or more movies doing so in a single year, there hasn’t been such an occurrence since 1996, when both lead lineups included performers from “Dead Man Walking” and “Leaving Las Vegas.” However, according to Gold Derby’s late-stage 2024 Oscar nominations predictions, that nearly three-decade gap is set to soon be closed by costar pairs from “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Maestro.”
The vast majority of the Oscars prognosticators who’ve been shaping our odds all season agree that Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”) will all clinch academy mentions for their lead performances. The last such quartet consisted of eventual winners Nicolas Cage (“Leaving Las Vegas”) and Susan Sarandon (“Dead Man Walking”) and their respective costars,...

Two decades ago at this time, the Oscar race for Best Actor was shaping up to be a rather competitive one. We had no idea what we were in for. Allow me to backtrack just a bit.
Three-time previous nominee Sean Penn had taken an early lead for his role as a troubled ex-convict and grieving father in Clint Eastwood’s crime drama “Mystic River.” Then Bill Murray began to generate major buzz for his portrayal of an aging movie star in Sofia Coppola’s acclaimed Tokyo-set comedy “Lost in Translation.”
The Golden Globes did little to clarify things. Penn prevailed in the drama category while Murray picked up the comedy/musical award. The latter did arguably get a bit of a boost with his charming acceptance speech.
All eyes were then on the Screen Actors Guild Award, which many thought would serve as a tie-breaker. But in the ultimate awards twist,...

The Blind is now the most successful release in the history of Fathom Events, as the faith-based feature has grossed $15.7 million at the North American box office as of Monday.
The film is Fathom’s first to see a longer theatrical run than its traditional event cinema releases. Originally slated for an eight-day run as part of Fathom’s new specialty distribution model, it was extended twice, Fathom said, and held a steady position in the top 10 for the duration of its more than three weeks in cinemas.
The Blind was produced by Tread Lively and Gnd Media Group. Andrew Hyatt directs the back-story of the star of Duck Dynasty, Phil Robertson. In 1960s Louisiana, Robertson falls in love and starts a family, but his demons soon threaten to tear everyone apart. As he seeks to conquer the shame of his past, he ultimately finds redemption in an unlikely place.

Oscar winner Tim Robbins has been on the big screen for well into his fourth decade. Tour through our photo gallery above of Robbins’s 10 greatest films, ranked from worst to best.
Robbins won his Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor for playing a former child abuse victim suspected of murder in Clint Eastwood‘s “Mystic River” (2003). He also competed as Best Director for the death-row prison drama “Dead Man Walking” (1995), which brought Susan Sarandon a Best Actress trophy. But while that film is certainly worthy of consideration among his best, this gallery is focused on Robbins’s work in front of the camera, so you won’t find it in our gallery above.
Though Robbins has yet to be recognized at the Emmys, his work on the HBO film “Cinema Verite” (2011) did bring him a Golden Globe nomination as Best TV Supporting Actor. Before that the actor won a...

With her long history as an outspoken advocate for progressive causes, it’s perhaps no surprise that Susan Sarandon has plenty to say about the ongoing actors strike (not to mention joining the picket line herself).
Speaking to THR Roma via Zoom from her home in Vermont, the Thelma & Louise star made it immediately clear she would adhere to SAG guidelines and avoid any promotion of her upcoming films, which include roles in Stephen Chbosky’s The Nonnas, along side Vince Vaughn, and Tyler Perry’s Triple Eight Six. “I can’t talk about any of my films,” she says. “I understand how difficult it is right now to do promotion without the actors.”
Nevertheless, the veteran actress, who won an Oscar in 1995 for her role in Dead Man Walking, still had plenty to say about the strike, the current state of Hollywood and how “the hardest part of acting is surviving.

Ángel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer's "Blue Beetle" (check out our review here) may not have been a box office success, but the latest venture from DC Studios and one of the last films of the DC Cinematic Universe before James Gunn and Peter Safran revamp the studio is thankfully one of the most fun. Not to mention, it's also one of the rare instances where a superhero movie embraces cultural specificity, instead of just perpetuating the same ol' white stories over and over again. If you've yet to see the film, here's what to expect.

The film also has a connection to the new DC Universe as James Gunn has said that Blue Beetle is the first Dcu character. Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto told THR that the mid-credit scene could provide a clue to that Dcu future.

The Blue Beetle mid-credit scene reveals that Ted Kord, the original Blue Beetle, is still alive. As Warner Bros. didn’t tell Ángel Manuel Soto to cut the tease, he’s optimistic that it will have the chance to be continued.

While the new DC Universe won’t officially begin until the release of Superman: Legacy, James Gunn has already said that Blue Beetle is the first Dcu character. That came as a huge relief to director Ángel Manuel Soto, as he now has the reassurance that the character of Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) will continue and that all their work wasn’t in vain.
“Yeah, that was for sure one of the elements of relief. It’s the fact that all of this effort was not going to die during this regime change,” Ángel Manuel Soto told THR. “We survived regime changes throughout this whole process, and that was a testament to the hard work that everybody put into it. There’s also a belief in our characters, who are now going to be part of this new DC universe, especially Xolo’s character and his whole family and Bruna Marquezine’s character.

Two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn has excelled in a number of fields, including acting, writing and directing. But it’s his career as a performer that has brought him the most acclaim. Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films as an actor, ranked worst to best.
Penn entered the Oscar race for the first time with his performance as a death row inmate in Tim Robbins’s “Dead Man Walking” (1995), for which he competed in Best Actor. Subsequent lead nominations as a jazz guitarist in Woody Allen’s “Sweet and Lowdown” (1999) and a mentally handicapped father in “I Am Sam” (2001) quickly followed.
He hit the Oscar jackpot with Clint Eastwood’s “Mystic River” (2003), which cast him as a criminal grieving the murder of his daughter. Just five years later, he returned to the winner’s circle with his lead role in “Milk” (2008), Gus Van Sant’s...

As one of the last projects of the former Dceu, it remains to be seen what the future has in store for Blue Beetle, but James Gunn has said that while Superman: Legacy will be the first movie in the Dcu, Blue Beetle will be the first Dcu character. That would suit Xolo Maridueña just fine, as he told Entertainment Weekly that he wants “to do 12 more years of Blue Beetle.“
Xolo Maridueña added that he has spoken with James Gunn and Peter Safran about the future of Blue Beetle. “Yeah, I have had the chance to speak with them,” Maridueña said. “They’re really happy for our project and so excited for us to kick off what is to eventually become the next Dcu. But with this movie, really what we wanted to highlight was Jaime’s story and the Reyes family’s story. I’m excited to see...

The arrival of the latest DC superhero is nearly upon us, and he may make a bigger impression at the box office than we thought. Previous reports stated that Blue Beetle was tracking toward a $17 million opening at the domestic box office, but a new report has seen that number almost double.
According to Deadline, early tracking for Blue Beetle finds the DC movie eyeing a $30 million opening at the domestic box office. While that may not seem impressive for a superhero movie, especially after The Flash bombed with a $55 million opening, it’s important to remember that Blue Beetle has a significantly lower budget. The report states that the film is tracking very well with Latino and Hispanic audiences, who are eager to see DC’s first Latino superhero on the big screen.

When people transform into their superhero personas in comic-book movies, the change is rarely as disturbing as it appears to be in Blue Beetle. While speaking with Variety, Blue Beetle director Angel Manuel Soto discussed his cinematic inspirations, including looking to David Cronenberg for the main character’s transformation.
Angel Manuel Soto is a die-hard cinephile who isn’t afraid to show his influences in his work, and when it came time to show Jaime’s first transformation into Blue Beetle, he wanted to make it a more visceral experience, just like the king of body horror. “How can we do [David] Cronenberg for kids?” Soto said. “I wanted the energy to be fun but also tell the story about the movies that made me love movies.“

It’s almost time for Jaime Reyes to scuttle onto the silver screen in DC’s Blue Beetle! While promotional engagements for the film have their wings clipped because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Fandango wants superhero fans to know that Blue Beetle tickets are available for pre-order!
Blue Beetle is DC’s second-to-last superhero film before James Gunn and Peter Safran reset aspects of the Dceu, ushering in a new era of superheroics and anticipated character debuts. Angel Manuel Soto’s Blue Beetle introduces Jaime Reyes, DC’s first solo superhero film with a Latino lead. Many DC fans have expressed excitement about the film, especially after the collected release of Blue Beetle: Graduation Day, a limited comic book series from writer Josh Trujillo and artist Adrian Gutierrez.
Here’s the official synopsis for Blue Beetle: Graduation Day via Penguin Random House:
Jaime Reyes has a lot to juggle.

When Warner Bros. reached out to Angel Manuel Soto about directing a DC movie, the Charm City Kings director had other ideas about his Dceu debut. “I wanted to pitch ideas, and one of them was the Bane origin story,” Soto told Den of Geek magazine. Bane, featured in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, is a complex villain with mystery flowing through his venom-infused veins. Countless writers have tackled the Batman back-breaking behemoth in the comics, and Soto wanted his chance to explore Bane’s history. “I always thought that there was something interesting in exploring his reality and how a character like that comes to be… [but] the conversation was not about that,” said Soto about WB’s intentions.
According to Soto, WB was excited to offer him a chance to direct Blue Beetle, the studio’s first superhero film with a Latino lead. While Soto’s idea...

DC’s Blue Beetle is skittering toward an unfortunate opening at the box office if the latest predictions are accurate. According to Boxoffice Pro, the superhero film starring Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes is tracking for the lowest opening weekend in the DC Extended Universe’s history. The site predicts a $12M-$17M domestic take for Blue Beetle’s opening gambit. Analysts also expect a domestic total of $27M-$55M for the film’s domestic run, a number that places Blue Beetle on the low end of DC‘s rickety ladder. However, it’s possible that the numbers are wrong, and Blue Beetle will open stronger than anticipated. We’ve seen underdog films blow past predictions, and positive word of mouth could boost the film’s performance.

Before the new DC Universe officially kicks off with Superman: Legacy, we still have two films that were developed under the old Dceu to go — Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and Blue Beetle. The Aquaman sequel won’t be released until December, but Blue Beetle will be hitting theaters next month, and star Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) told Total Film that it has gotten the seal of approval from James Gunn himself.
“I just remember James Gunn has this really excited energy to him all the time,” Xolo Maridueña said. “But them coming into this position of the movie already being made, and then being like, ‘All right [mimes rifling through a filing cabinet as if rummaging through the movie], let’s see what we have here’ – it was very rewarding for them to actually respond well to it and enjoy it. Jaime Reyes faces off against villain Conrad Carapax aka The Indestructible Man in the final trailer to “Blue Beetle,” released Tuesday.
Landing in theaters Aug. 18, “Cobra Kai” breakout and fan favorite Xolo Maridueña stars in the title role of Jaime Reyes in “Blue Beetle,” DC Studios’ first superhero movie centered on a Latino character.
Carapax is a humanoid-insectoid creature with a tough exoskeleton that gives him incredible strength and durability. Previously, the film’s first trailer captured Reyes’ transformation from a daydreaming teenager to an unexpected hero with great responsibility. Maridueña previously described “Blue Beetle” as a combination of both a DC and Marvel superhero.

[Warning: This story contains spoilers for The Flash.]
Filmmaker Kevin Smith had a full-circle moment when watching The Flash and seeing Nicolas Cage’s cameo as Superman.
During a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the director/producer/writer said he “just about passed out” when he first learned the actor was going to be making an appearance in the Andy Muschietti-directed film as the iconic superhero.
“I finally got to see Nic Cage be Superman,” Smith said. “It has been an absolute delight for me.”
It hits close for Smith because he initially penned several draft screenplays for the infamous 1998 film Superman Lives, which was never made. Smith has been open about difficulties they faced with the film and production, including producer Jon Peters making several demands, such as Superman having to fight a giant spider. They two also disagreed on who should play the title role.
“Jon Peters was like, ‘I want Sean Penn to play Superman.

The singer is voicing the Scarab, an alien-created artificial intelligence that gives superpowers to Blue Beetle, played by “Cobra Kai” breakout and fan favorite Xolo Maridueña.
In the DC Comics, Scarab has been passed down through several of the heroes who have operated as Blue Beetle. However, it also has a mind of its own and can sometimes take control of its host, leading to conflicts and challenges for the Blue Beetle.
