Todd Haynes' "May December" is the most deliberately uncomfortable movie of 2023, but you owe yourself a viewing. Gracie Atherton-Yoo (Julianne Moore) is a middle-aged woman with a husband, Joe (Charles Melton), less than half her age; they met when he was in 7th grade and she groomed him.
Before you ask, no, depiction is not an endorsement here. Gracie is self-pitying and manipulative, Joe is trapped in arrested development, and the movie hammers in how destructive their "relationship" has been for him; part of him wants to escape but doesn't know how. "May December" enters murky waters to ask tough questions about the audience's relationship to sensationalism.
As Haynes has acknowledged, Samy Burch's screenplay is loosely inspired by the life of Mary Kay Letourneau, a real predator who married her victim Vili Fualaau after being convicted in 1997. These events were a media sensation and have been echoed in film before,...

When Joel Kim Booster first set out to write what would become “Fire Island,” he knew he wanted to write about the nearly decade long friendship he’s had with his co-star Bowen Yang. The two were connected by a mutual friend shortly after Booster moved to New York. “They couched it though in, ‘You know, there’s this other gay Asian comedian that you should know.’ Because that’s how it was presented to us, we were both sort of hesitant to meet because we didn’t want that person to be right,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the exclusive video interview above).
But when the two did actually meet, the pair had an instant connection that came from shared experiences coming from marginalized communities. “It was very immediately apparent to both of us that we needed each other to a certain extent and we...

I had a chance to watch the first three episodes of the new Netflix limited series “Beef” last night, and it didn’t take long before I was hooked. It came inside of 10 minutes. Steven Yeun (as the suicidal contractor Danny Cho) and Ali Wong (as the wealthy but tortured boutique entrepreneur Amy Lau) are brilliant and deserving of all the praise that’s already been heaped upon them, and the narrative and production are irresistibly intriguing and discomforting. But what struck me was how quickly I forgot I was watching a production filled almost exclusively with Asian American actors. It all became rather seamless, even as the storyline alluded the players’ ethnicity.
The reception greeting the series that despite its title deals with beef mostly metaphorically (stemming from a road rage incident leading to an elongated feud that makes the protagonists feel alive) has been deservedly exalted, bolstered by major word of mouth.

Soon after wrapping four seasons of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, the cult CW musical that saw her segue from screenwriter to showrunner, Aline Brosh McKenna decided to revisit her past before turning her attention to the future. She rented the garden apartment in the same Larchmont-adjacent duplex she and her now-husband shared during the mid-’90s, not too far from the home where they now live. “We’d always look down at this unit and say, ‘Ugh, we wish we had that,’ ” she says of her shingle’s headquarters. “Now this is my office, which feels wonderfully full circle.”

Sarah Michelle Gellar is talking about how Dolly Parton was a producer on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
During a visit to The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon, Gellar was asked about Parton being an uncredited producer on the show she starred in for seven seasons.
“Yes, little known fact, the legend Dolly Parton was a producer,” she said on the NBC late-night show. “We never saw her [but] we’d get Christmas gifts in the beginning that would have our name, and I would think, ‘She doesn’t even know who I am.’ And then one day, someone asked her about it, and she complimented the show and my performance. I was like, ‘Oh, I can die now. Dolly Parton knows who I am and thinks I’m good.'”
Sandollar Productions, which Parton started with her then-business partner Sandy Gallin, was behind the supernatural drama, alongside Mutant Enemy Productions and 20th Century Fox Television.

Slapdash, direct-to-video horror sequels cropped up like weeds in the 2000s, but no title from this particular era continues to receive as much flak as American Psycho 2 (sometimes subtitled All American Girl). As people probably know by now, this began as an original movie called The Girl Who Wouldn’t Die before someone at Lionsgate had the bright idea to make it into a sequel to American Psycho. To say critics and audiences back then hated the decision would be an understatement. Yet in this time of constant reevaluation of overhated cinema, maybe Morgan J. Freeman‘s American Psycho 2 isn’t a complete misfire. Beyond the panning and massive studio meddling sits a dark and sometimes fun comedy that was never given a fair chance.
“Angrier, deadlier, sexier” says the tagline for American Psycho 2, but this lambasted sequel is far less lurid than its poster suggests. Before the present-day plot begins,...

HBO Max has added four great actresses to the second season of its acclaimed comedy “Hacks,” with Laurie Metcalf, Martha Kelly, Ming-Na Wen and Margaret Cho coming aboard.
While details about their roles have not been disclosed, Metcalf, Kelly and Wen will each join as recurring guests, and Cho will make at least one guest appearance.
Per the “Hacks” Season 2 logline, “The dark mentorship between legendary Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and her young, entitled writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder) continues to evolve as the two travel across the country workshopping Deborah’s new stand-up act.”
Of course, if you remember what happened just before the cut to black at the end of Season 1, you know things are probably very, very awkward between Deborah and Ava.
A three-time Emmy-Winner for “Roseanne” and Best Supporting Actress Oscar-winner for “Lady Bird,” Metcalf has also won eight Tony awards among her many accolades.

Spoiler alert: This post contains massive spoilers from “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”
“Shang-Chi and the Legends of the 10 Rings,” Marvel’s first film with an Asian lead and cast, is full of cultural and mythological references.
While the titular “Legend of the 10 Rings” is a tale created for the film, other elements are rooted in Chinese culture — both traditional and modern.
Here are the Chinese customs from “Shang-Chi” explained, in order of appearance:
Breakfast porridge
When Shaun (Simu Liu) visits Katy (Awkwafina), he joins the family for breakfast. Rather than cereal, they eat rice porridge, also called jook or congee. A simple and plain dish, jook is often paired with youtiao (Chinese donuts). Before entering their house, Shaun removes his shoes outside — a common custom in Asian households. The reason? To not track in outside dirt and grime. Oftentimes, residents will wear house slippers for use indoors only.

Without Fresh Off the Boat, the current Asian American boom in Hollywood wouldn't — couldn't — look like it does today. When the TV landscape was much smaller and lily-white, any series that centered on minorities had to shoulder an unfair burden of representing that entire group. Margaret Cho’s short-lived Nineties series All-American Girl couldn’t just be a goofy family sitcom, because it was also the very first one about an Asian-American clan. With the release of Crazy Rich Asians right around the corner (Aug. 15 to be exact), the film’s star Constance Wu sent out a heartfelt and inspirational message about her journey to Hollywood and how the Jon M. Chu-directed romantic comedy, like ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat, is breaking ground and blazing trails when it comes to inclusion of Asian Americans in film and TV.
Wu took to Twitter with a detailed post about how she went from waiting tables to starring in Fresh Off the Boat, which is heading to a fifth season, and playing the leading lady in Crazy Rich Asians. The two projects are a significant milestone for Asian American representation. Fresh Off the Boat is the first network TV show spotlighting Asian Americans since Margaret Cho’s sitcom All-American Girl in 1994 while Crazy Rich Asians is the first Hollywood studio film in over 25 years...

Because of ingrained racism, Sandra Oh didn’t even initially think she was being offered the lead role on BBC America’s “Killing Eve,” but on Thursday, she earned herself an Emmy nomination for it. On the show, the actress plays security operative Eve Polastri, who is hunting down an elusive but flamboyant international assassin.
Oh’s nomination is significant on a number of levels, since she has been overdue for good roles after playing Cristina Yang on “Grey’s Anatomy.” “Killing Eve” has been worth the wait because it showcases her dramatic and comedic talents in equal measure: IndieWire has made no secret that “Killing Eve” is a favorite for its killer performances, dialogue, action, and style. Much credit goes to “Fleabag” creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who was also nominated for writing the first episode of “Killing Eve,” for the show’s unique point of view and tone.

Ten years ago the TV landscape didn’t much lend itself to diversity. Straight, white, able-bodied men dominated the medium. Today, however, the TV terrain is slowly diversifying with women of color, people with disabilities and queer characters — and in the comedy genre especially, stories are becoming more inclusive.
“Any kind of storytelling that seeks to tell fundamental truths about the human condition can be inclusive,” says Justin Simien, who executive produces “Dear White People” for Netflix. “Comedy does have a unique power, however, in that laughter can be so seductive. It allows us to think about and explore those forbidden and difficult little topics that we might not otherwise, by taking the pressure off a bit.”
While “Dear White People” explores racial relations and political activism in a college campus setting, Kenya Barris’ ABC comedy “Black-ish” takes on the topics of slavery, police shootings and the general black experience...

Starting out in 1939 as the little studio that could, Hammer would finally make their reputation in the late fifties reimagining Universal’s black and white horrors as eye-popping Technicolor gothics – their pictorial beauty, thanks to cameramen like Jack Asher and Arthur Ibbetson, was fundamental to the studio’s legacy. So it’s been more than a little frustrating to see such disrespect visited upon these films by home video companies happy to smother the market with grainy prints, incoherent cropping and under-saturated colors. The House of Hammer and the film community in general deserve far better than that.
Thanks to Indicator, the home video arm of Powerhouse films based in the UK, those wrongs are beginning to be righted, starting with their impressive new release of Hammer shockers, Fear Warning! Even better news for stateside fans; the set is region-free, ready to be relished the world over.

Gigi Hadid seems to have it all: more magazine covers than any other model this year, every major catwalk under her belt, a standing invitation to walk the Victoria’s Secret runway and pose for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue, a killer squad of fellow models, a cute boyfriend who lets her wear his shoes … we could go on. She’s even moved into the role of muse for Tommy Hilfilger, collaborating with him on a clothing line and serving as the face of his fragrance. But things weren’t always so golden for the model and the designer.

“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” is an odd TV series. A comedy with dramatic elements, it’s a musical that expresses the feelings of its lead character, Rebecca Bunch (YouTube star Rachel Bloom), via original songs. The ratings aren’t amazing and the show is an Emmy longshot, but people are finding it, and the fans are passionate. It’s unlike anything you’ve seen before; the question is, how many Emmy voters will see it.
At a recent Fyc Emmy event, Bloom bounded out in bra and Spanx to perform an opening number and then returned dressed for an informative Q & A panel. The audience, packed with fans, whooped and hollered; everyone on stage enjoyed playing to the room. That’s the feeling you get from the CW show itself: as hard as it is to pull off, everyone is having a blast.
So how did this crazy show come about? While...

It was just one year ago that Fresh off the Boat premiered on ABC, becoming the first sitcom about an Asian-American family to air on broadcast television since Margaret Cho’s All-American Girl in 1994. And while this achievement is bewildering in its simplicity, so is the next one: Last night, during its midseason return, Fresh off the Boat become the first show to celebrate Chinese New Year. “Obviously every holiday has been done a thousand times. There’s been a million Christmases, a million Thanksgivings, a million Halloweens,” showrunner Nahnatchka Khan said. “But I’d be surprised if there was a show that has ever done Chinese New Year because there just hasn’t been the opportunity or awareness that we have on our show.” Khan knew she wanted to do Chinese New Year when they they got a second season order. At the time, ABC had only ordered 13 episodes,...

It's been over 20 years since Margaret Cho starred in the first Asian-American family sitcom on network television, All-American Girl, but it looks like she might be coming back with her own show on Amazon. Deadline reports that Cho has an hour-long dramedy in the works at the streaming/selling-you-everything giant called Highland, where her character must attend court-ordered rehab and move in with her family, which now runs a pot dispensary. Unlike All-American Girl, Cho will have some creative control: She'll be executive-producing the show alongside the writer Liz Sarnoff. It's a long way from the bookstore in San Francisco, but hopefully there are still copies of Ass Master lying around.

ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat” is only the second sitcom about Asian-Americans, and the first since Margaret Cho‘s All-American Girl in 1994. It has also proven to be a showcase for actress Constance Wu, who plays the wife in a Taiwanese family who move to Orlando to open a restaurant. Wu’s previous roles were mostly in support in projects like “Stephanie Daley” and “Law & Order: Svu.” “I think that it’s great that we’re claiming our identity as Asian-Americans,...

Thank you, David Robert Mitchell, because I now have a way of avoiding that awkward “Birds and the Bees” chat when the time comes for my bewildered offspring, as I’ll just pop on It Follows and let your sinisterly sexual horror flick work its magic!
We’ve all seen our fair share of high school slashers where hormone-ravaged teens can’t keep it in their pants long enough to evade the clutches of Jason, Freddy, Michael, or any of the usual suspects, but Mitchell’s hanky-panky fueled genre-bender creates a new game that turns premarital sex into an orgasmic death sentence. Being a slow-burn cat-and-mouse thriller in the simplest sense, It Follows trounces the vilest of STDs by creating a post-sex monster who hunts down the unluckiest of fornicators. There are rules to Mitchell’s scenario, rules...

Based on his memoir, "Fresh Off The Boat" is Eddie Huang's story. It's certainly not my story. I've never been an 11-year-old son of Taiwanese immigrants moving from Chinatown in Washington, DC to the suburbs of Orlando. "Fresh Off The Boat" can't be my story. But I hope Eddie Huang would forgive my feeling that, at least to some degree, "Fresh Off The Boat" is absolutely my story. In the early '90s, I was a 13-year-old son of Canadian immigrants living in Mississippi, going to a middle school in which I was one of a dozen white kids and the only Jewish kid. I didn't have to explain stinky tofu to my colleagues at lunch, but I assure you that my bagels were plenty confusing. I spent a lot of time being called Bud Bundy, because at the time, all of my classmates were watching a lot of Fox...

Midway through the press tour panel for ABC's "Fresh Off the Boat," actress Constance Wu argued, "Progress arises out of conflict, not out of pretending everything's hunky-dory." "Fresh Off the Boat" — the first network sitcom with a predominantly Asian-American cast in 20 years, since ABC's "All-American Girl" with Margaret Cho — is a clear sign of progress, as well as one of the funnier comedies debuting over the next few months. (Its first two episodes air on Wednesday, February 4, before moving to Tuesdays at 8 on February 10.) It's also a show with a fair amount of conflict. Yesterday, New York Magazine published a first-person essay by Eddie Huang, who wrote the memoir on which the show is based, and serves as both a producer and the adult narrator of the '90s adventures of young Eddie (Hudson Yang). The essay goes on at length about his discomfort with the attempt to homogenize his...

Margaret Cho has been a killer standup presence for over two decades, and today on her 45th birthday, allow us to highlight all of the qualities that make her a living legend, a dependable source of progressive thought, and the kind of performer who has never, ever shied away from discussing gay issues in her act. I’ve ranked my favorite Cho things, and the good news is there are tons more to choose from.
10. Her reconciliation with her sexuality: “I had this whole thing: Am I gay? Am I straight? Then I realized: I’m just slutty.”
9. She’s been hilarious since the second she set foot onstage.
8. Her activism and blogging, particularly her piece about the weird homophobia of Michelle Shocked.

In a competitive situation, Showtime has landed Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, a half-hour comedy with musical elements from top feature writer Aline Brosh McKenna and CBS TV Studios. The project, written by McKenna and Rachel Bloom, centers on a girl who upends her life to stalk an ex. I hear the commitment from Showtime is equivalent to a put pilot. This marks a return to TV for McKenna, who started on the ABC comedy All-American Girl before segueing to features. She made her mark writing The Devil Wears Prada and most recently co-penned the upcoming Annie and Cinderella.
