Capt. Vasili Borodin : I will live in Montana. And I will marry a round American woman and raise rabbits, and she will cook them for me. And I will have a pickup truck... maybe even a "recreational vehicle." And drive from state to state. Do they let you do that?
Captain Ramius : I suppose.
Capt. Vasili Borodin : No papers?
Captain Ramius : No papers, state to state.
Capt. Vasili Borodin : Well then, in winter I will live in... Arizona. Actually, I think I will need two wives.
Captain Ramius : Oh, at least.
-
Capt. Vasili Borodin : I would like to have seen Montana.
-
Captain Ramius : Re-verify our range to target... one ping only.
Capt. Vasili Borodin : Captain, I - I - I just...
Captain Ramius : Give me a ping, Vasili. One ping only, please.
Capt. Vasili Borodin : Aye, Captain.

[the Russian Alpha submarine shoots a torpedo at the Red October]
Capt. Vasili Borodin : Torpedo impact, 20 seconds.
Captain Ramius : [to Ryan] What books?
Jack Ryan : [confused] Pardon me?
Captain Ramius : What books did you write?
Jack Ryan : I wrote a biography of, of Admiral Halsey, called "The Fighting Sailor", about, uh, naval combat tactics...
Captain Ramius : I know this book!
Capt. Vasili Borodin : Torpedo impact...
Captain Ramius : Your conclusions were all wrong, Ryan...
Capt. Vasili Borodin : ...10 seconds.
Captain Ramius : ...Halsey acted stupidly.
[Ryan is dumbfounded that Ramius' mind is about book criticism, while they are about to be hit by a torpedo within a few seconds]
Capt. Vasili Borodin : 9, 8, 7, 6...
[Ryan looks worriedly at captain Mancuso]
Capt. Vasili Borodin : 5, 4, 3, 2...
[everyone prepares for the impact]
Capt. Vasili Borodin : Torpedo impact... now.
[the torpedo slams into the bow of Red October and breaks up harmlessly on impact. The Red October is unharmed. The broken shards of the torpedo drift away]
Capt. Bart Mancuso : I'll be damned.
Jack Ryan : What happened?
Capt. Bart Mancuso : Combat tactics, Mr. Ryan. By turning into the torpedo, the Captain closed the distance before it could arm itself.

Slavin - Red October : Before we begin, Captain, I'd like to know exactly what happened to Putin. He didn't slip on his tea, did he?
Capt. Vasili Borodin : I don't think I like your tone, Slavin.
Slavin - Red October : What the hell's my tone got to do with it? We're risking our lives here.
Capt. Vasili Borodin : Look, Putin could have caused complications. What did you think, he would just go away and sulk while we carried out our plans?
-
Capt. Vasili Borodin : Captain, I would never disagree with you in front of the men, you know that. But in this case, Victor is right. It would have been better if you had not informed Moscow.
Captain Ramius : Oh, Vasily. Moscow is not the worry, nor the whole Soviet navy. I know their tactics. I have the advantage. No. The worry is the Americans. If we meet the right sort, this will work.
-
Capt. Vasili Borodin : [reading aloud the morse-code message from the approaching US warship] Red October. Red October. Halt and stay where you are. Do not attempt to submerge or you will be fired upon...
Capt. Vasili Borodin : [to Ramius] Captain! I think he means to board us!
-
Slavin - Red October : Sonar contact, Captain. Port quarter. Close aboard. American, Los Angeles-class.
Capt. Vasili Borodin : American. Captain, we...
[Ramius gestures for silence]
Slavin - Red October : Course, 3-1-0.
Captain Ramius : Is the American turning to follow us?
Slavin - Red October : No, Captain. The American is continuing in his original course. He's continuing northwest.
Captain Ramius : He can't hear us.
-
Lieutenant Melekhin, Engineer - Red October : I found out what happened to the caterpillar. The buffer circuit has been torn out. It was only a matter of time before an overload shut down the whole caterpillar.
Captain Ramius : What are you saying?
Lieutenant Melekhin, Engineer - Red October : Whoever did this knew how to cripple a caterpillar in a way not easy to find.
Capt. Vasili Borodin : Captain, we have a saboteur on board.
Captain Ramius : It can't be any of the officers. They had all the time in the world before we put to sea. Must be a member of the crew.
[to Vasili]
Captain Ramius : Go below, Putin's cabin. Check his files for information on the crew. We may have to put them off before we planned.
-
Capt. Vasili Borodin : What happened?
Lieutenant Melekhin, Engineer - Red October : The cryogenic plant! The magnets aren't being cooled. And the temperature in the caterpillar is 50 degrees above red line and rising. If we don't shut it off, it'll melt!
Capt. Vasili Borodin : Kill it! Shut it down!
[Melekhin whistles and non-verbally relays the order]
Capt. Vasili Borodin : [calling on the comm] Captain?
Captain Ramius : What happened?
Capt. Vasili Borodin : The cryogenic plant failed.
Captain Ramius : Reactor damage?
Lieutenant Melekhin, Engineer - Red October : There was a power spike, but the reactor scrammed automatically.
Dr. Petrov : Was there any core damage? Was there any radiation leakage?
Lieutenant Melekhin, Engineer - Red October : I don't know yet, damn it!
Capt. Vasili Borodin : How long will it take to fix?
Lieutenant Melekhin, Engineer - Red October : I gotta find out what's wrong first. Could be a problem with the liquid helium, or maybe the superconductors.
Capt. Vasili Borodin : Captain, we will have to stop until we can make repairs to the caterpillar unit.
Captain Ramius : Negative. We'll run on normal propulsion.
Capt. Vasili Borodin : Captain, we will not be silent.
Captain Ramius : Make revolutions for 20 knots and engage the propellors.
