Paul Verhoeven's 1990 film "Total Recall" takes place in the distant future of 2084. Mars has not only been colonized, but it has also fallen under the rule of an evil governor named Vilos Cohaagen (Ronny Cox). The planet is rich with a rare, valuable ore called turbinium, but mining it has caused widespread pollution and radiation. Many of the Martian citizens have mutated as a result, their bodies sprouting extra body parts or sporting unusual growths. In many cases, mutants are also mildly psychic. To combat Cohaagen's corruption, a Mutant Resistance has formed, led by the mysterious and difficult-to-find Kuato (Marshall Bell).
The protagonist of "Total Recall" is Quaid (Arnold Schwarzenegger), a former agent for Cohaagen who had his memory erased and his identity changed. It takes a long while for Quaid to understand what happened to him, but he eventually discovers that he has to combat Cohaagen and help the Mutant Resistance.

Logan “Stan” Garner, a train coordinator for movie and TV productions who often played a train conductor on film, died May 20 in Arizona. He was 83.
Born in Pasadena, he lived in Southern California until moving to Arizona in 2007. Garner was a founding partner with Short Line Enterprises, where he restored and operated 19th century steam locomotives and passenger cars for museums and excursion trains.
After film and TV producers began requesting trains, the company created a movie railroad backlot, which was used for productions until the late 1980s. As owner of the Train Source, he became a sought-out train coordinator, assembling locomotives, providing passenger and freight cars, creating sets for train crossings, tracks and stations and providing personnel for TV productions.
He became a SAG member and was often cast as a train conductor or railroad worker in productions.
Garner worked on over 300 feature films, TV episodes, movies of the week and music videos.

After a stellar 1989, the Hollywood box office of 1990 was expected to be even better – but the film industry got taught some tough lessons.
Browsing the worldwide box office charts for 1989, and many a major studio executive would have been stroking their chin with some degree of comfort. The same old was working. The new things were working. Everything was getting better. The Christmas party was clearly going to be on the impressive side.
What 1989 had proven, after all, was the growing feeling that big stuff worked too. Tim Burton’s Batman had firmly introduced the idea of the huge opening weekend at the box office, and that a movie could become a cultural phenomenon. That patrons would leave the cinema and promptly seek out the soundtrack, the computer game, the book, the T-shirt, the novelty undercrackers.
But it wasn’t just Batman. 1989 proved to Hollywood that, for the most part,...

The "Back to the Future" films are incredibly beloved, with a unique impact on pop culture that's almost hard to quantify. Robert Zemeckis' 1985 film "Back to the Future" spawned two sequels, a video game, and even a musical, as well as providing the genesis for the adult cartoon "Rick and Morty." The first movie is a zany tale of down-on-his-luck teenager Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) who ends up traveling through time in a DeLorean with the help of mad scientist Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd), wreaking havoc on the timeline and engaging in all kinds of silly time travel tropes along the way. The second film is a direct continuation of the first, with time travel to 1955 and 2015 to try and create the best future for Marty and his family. It's not as beloved as the first movie, but folks are still pretty fond of it. Then there's the "Back to the Future Part III,...

"Bones" fans will surely recall that "Angela Montenegro" was not the birth name of the character played by actress Michaela Conlin. The origin of her true full birth name was one of the show's longest-running mysteries, and showrunner Hart Hanson and the "Bones" writers held onto that secret until the 10th season's 21st episode, "The Life in the Light," where it was revealed that "Angela" was actually born with a far more ... unusual name: Pookie Noodlin Pearly-Gates Gibbons.
That delightfully unconventional name makes a little more sense when you remember that Billy F. Gibbons, the guitarist and lead singer of rock band Zz Top, played Angela's father on the show, and he was essentially playing a heightened version of himself. But the writers took things a step further and embedded a hidden reference into the relationship between Gibbons and Angela that only hardcore Zz Top fans would know.

Back to the Future is considered to be one of the greatest time travel films ever made. Having become a hit in the mid-’80s, the sci–fi classic has been discovered by fresh eyes in the four decades since its release with each new wave of fans fascinated by its behind the scenes trivia.
Do you remember the first time you heard that Michael J. Fox wasn’t originally cast as Marty McFly? Do you recall how weird it was seeing footage of Mask star Eric Stolz as Marty, or finding out that the film would have been called Space Man from Pluto if producer Steven Spielberg hadn’t stepped in to stop studio exec Sid Sheinberg from changing the title? Did you know that Marty’s mentor Doc Brown was supposed to have a pet chimp instead of a dog called Einstein?

The concept of time travel, though usually lumped in with science fiction, is actually far closer to fantasy. The notion is rooted in nostalgia, the collective unconscious assumption that there was such a thing as "the good old days." It's also borne out of an interest in history, which as "The Holdovers" so recently and succinctly stated, is really an interest in knowing more about ourselves. While actual time travel will likely never exist, a particular form of it has already existed for over 100 years: cinema.
If poring through film history allows a viewer to ostensibly travel through time, then it only follows that cinema would be a natural tool to examine history and time travel as well. When co-writer and producer Bob Gale hit upon his father's old high school yearbook one day and wondered if he and his father would've been friends (let alone like each other) had...

The Story: H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) does the impossible – after writing about a time machine he actually builds one. Too bad then that one of his dearest friends is secretly Jack the Ripper (David Warner) and uses the machine to escape justice by going into the future – 1979 San Francisco to be exact. Left with no choice and believing that he’s unleashed a monster upon a utopia (ha!), Wells pursues him through time, but winds up being a lot more out of his element than his nemesis.
The Players: Starring Malcolm McDowell, David Warner & Mary Steenburgen. Written and directed by Nicholas Meyer.
Oh, I love that part. I love that film, actually. Well of course, I was in love during the filmmaking—how could you not love the damn film? And I’ve always loved San Francisco since. – Malcolm McDowell – Random Roles

If Hollywood ever opts to reboot “Back to the Future” without the original cast, Michael J. Fox says he’s at peace with the decision.
“I’m not fanatical,” Fox told Variety for a recent cover story on his life and career. “Do what you want. It’s your movie. I got paid already.”
But that doesn’t mean he thinks it’s a good idea. Fox also believes that Robert Zemeckis, the trilogy’s director and writer, and his co-writer, Bob Gale, wouldn’t be down with it either.
“I don’t think it needs to be,” Fox added. “I think Bob and Bob have been really smart about that. I don’t think it needs rebooting because are you going to clarify something? You’re going to find a better way to tell the story? I doubt it.”

One of the most endearing friendships ever to grace the silver screen is between Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown in the legendary trilogy of the Back to the Future movies. In real life, Michael J. Yes, they decided to make a sequel to R.I.P.D., the wacky supernatural action movie from 2013 that ended up bombing when it opened. Considering it took them almost 9 years to make this sequel, it seems to be a cash grab move for the studio, bringing back an existing IP for more "content" instead of making anything new. Like Back to the Future Part III, this sequel is set in the Old West in 1876. The Wild West has gone to Hell, literally, and the world's best hope of being saved lies in the gun-slinging hands of Sheriff Roy Pulsipher as he becomes the newest officer for the Rest In Peace Department enforcing the afterlife's laws. Jeffrey Donovan stars with Penelope Mitchell, Jake Choi, Richard Brake, and Kerry Knuppe. At least the trailer is free to watch,...

Doctor Emmett Brown and Marty McFly reunited for one more whirlwind adventure at New York Comic Con on Oct. 8. As part of a "Back to the Future" reunion panel at the convention, Christopher Lloyd and Michael J. Fox sat down to reminisce about their days in the DeLorean. Before the actors could even take their seats, they were met with thunderous applause from the audience, who were delighted to see the iconic sci-fi heroes reconvene 37 years after the original 1985 "Back to the Future" film.
During the panel, Lloyd and Fox happily joked about their days filming with each other and their instant chemistry behind the scenes. When asked about the first time they met, Lloyd explained that it was the first day of shooting. Fox added, "It was the first day of shooting. You were literally outside of the DeLorean. [The director] said, 'Here's Chris. [Here's] Mike. Go.'" Lloyd added, "There was immediate chemistry,...

Tommy Morgan, a harmonica soloist who contributed to hundreds of movie and TV shows including “Roots” and “Dances With Wolves,” died June 23. He was 89.
Morgan played on film soundtracks and record dates going back to the early 1950s. His estimated 7,000 recording sessions, according to statistics on his website, suggest that more people have heard his harmonica work than that of any other player of the instrument.
That’s Morgan’s harmonica on Quincy Jones’ “Sanford and Son” theme, Mike Post’s “Rockford Files” theme and the scores for numerous shows including “Maverick,” “The Waltons,” “The Dukes of Hazzard,” “China Beach,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Family Guy.”
He played on the Emmy-winning score for “Roots” and its sequel, “Roots: The Next Generations.” And his bass harmonica was the signature sound of Arnold Ziffel, the pig on “Green Acres.”

David J. Negron Sr., a conceptual painter, illustrator and storyboard artist with credits including Indiana Jones, Ghostbusters and Jurassic Park, died peacefully in his sleep on October 12, his family tells Deadline. He was 85.
“He was an inspiration to the Motion Picture community and the fine arts world,” the Negron family said in a statement. “We have lost a loving father, grandfather and a beautiful soul.”
Negron embarked on his career as a conceptual painter in the mid-1960s, going on to collaborate with Steven Spielberg on Indiana Jones and the Raiders of The Lost Ark and Jurassic Park, visualizing iconic scenes including the Giant Boulder chase for the former, along with various dinosaur environments for the latter. Since then, they've expanded into the sequels with figures, vehicles and accessories inspired by "Back to the Future Part II." But one of the most fun Playmobil releases for the time traveling franchise was the advent calendar released before the holidays last year that included a cardboard diorama of the Hill Valley clock tower and a bunch of cool pieces to recreate some of the film's most memorable scenes. This year, Playmobil is releasing another advent calendar, and it will be packed with items inspired...

There’s never a bad time for a new superhero show, mind you. But with Amazon’s brilliantly bloody The Boys having been off air for five or so months now, the streaming world is particularly due for a new supe. With its list of new releases for March 2021, Amazon is going to be rectifying that.
The animated adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s comic series Invincible is set to arrive on Amazon Prime this March 26. Kirkman’s comic series is a colorful, thrilling, and violent take on superhero myths and the series that it inspired will feature a truly impressive cast. Take that all into account and this will be an important addition to the streaming superhero canon.
Also arriving in March is another big ticket item for Amazon. The long-awaited Coming to America sequel, Coming 2 America, will premiere on March 5. Eddie Murphy returns as Prince Akeem Joffer who...

In his original review for Back to the Future Part II, Roger Ebert (the Alpha and Omega of film criticism) called the movie “an exercise in goofiness, an excursion into various versions of the past and future that is so baffling that even the characters are constantly trying to explain it to each other.”
Although his review was largely a positive one, his sentiments echoed those of audiences who felt that Part II was an exercise in contrivance — one marked by baffling character choices, strange plot details (ditching Jennifer from the story), and the overwhelming darkness of the alternative 1985 sequence, and a cliffhanger ending that sidelined the feel good elements of the first film for something strange and unfamiliar. Which is exactly what a sequel should do, i.e. The Empire Strikes Back.
Cut to 2020 and all of us are living in the Biff Tannen’s Pleasure Palace timeline, so...

After collaborating on the inventive (but underperforming) films I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Used Cars, Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale struck creative gold in 1985 with Back to the Future, easily the most popular sci-fi comedy in history.
But then again, what even is history? As the popular franchise — which also included 1989’s dark and weird time-jumping odyssey Back to the Future Part II and 1990’s charming Western Back to the Future Part III — illustrated how time is more mutable than any of us could possibly imagine. So maybe this explains how it seems like Marty and Doc have been with us forever, a feeling that is heightened by the release of Back to the Future: The Ultimate Trilogy. This new 4K Ultra HD set features stunning A/V and enough archival and new special features to ensure that your, um, time is well spent. In conjunction with this release,...

September marks the start of the traditional TV season. For many networks and cable channels, however, this will be an usual season with the coronavirus pandemic halting production leaving behind paltry fall lineups. Over on Netflix, however, things continue to operate at high capacity.
Netflix is rolling out quite a few original series and movies for its new releases in September 2020. The Hillary Swank-starring space drama Away premieres on September 4. That is followed by a whole host of intriguing concepts including Julie and the Phantoms (Sept. 10), Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (Sept. 18), and even the Nurse Ratched origin story series called Ratched (Sept. 18).
The film side of things is just as packed. Romantic comedy Love, Guaranteed premieres on Sept. 3, Charlie Kaufman’s latest effort I’m Thinking of Ending Things arrives on Sept. 4, and the Tom Holland-starring thriller The Devil All the Time bows on Sept. 16. That’s not even to mention Enola Holmes on Sept.
