In a Variety profile of legendary composer John Williams earlier this year, director Steven Spielberg singled out a reason why the musician's work seems to stand out among his contemporaries.
"Every score he's ever composed, and even the ones that might have the most complicated orchestrations, he always has a beautiful main theme," Spielberg said. "And I don't hear themes being written for movies as much as they used to be by Jerry Goldsmith, Elmer Bernstein, Max Steiner, Dimitri Tiomkin and Bernard Herrmann. Film composition isn't a lost art, but thematic scoring is becoming more and more a lost art. And the great thing about Johnny is, he's still got it."
Of course, to say Williams has "still got it" is something of an understatement. The prolific composer is synonymous with the type of sweeping, powerful, emotional music that helped to define blockbuster filmmaking. A crucial part of why those scores clicked with audiences,...

The Return of Legolas: 5 Ways the Elven Prince Could Contribute to The Hunt for Gollum - Main Image
A new film, The Lord of the Rings, is currently in development, and fans are already formulating theories about who will appear from the previous movies. Titled The Hunt for Gollum, the film will be directed by Gollum himself, Andy Serkis.
It is still unclear who might appear from the previous movies, but fans are sure that Aragorn will be important in hunting the creature formerly known as Smeagol.
Another figure who would likely participate in the hunt is the Prince of Mirkwood, Legolas. But what would the Elven prince's role be in the hunt?
His Abilities Are Invaluable to the Hunt
First things first, the Mirkwood Prince is possibly one of the best warriors in Middle-Earth! He makes archery look easy, and his agility allows him to keep up with the chase.

No, it's not the early 2000s. Be that as it may, not one but two "Lord of the Rings" movies found themselves comfortably in the top 10 at the box office this past weekend. Indeed, thanks to a re-release of Peter Jackson's much-beloved trilogy based on J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy saga by Fathom Events, both "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Two Towers" managed to sneak past "The Strangers: Chapter 1" to make it onto the charts.
"Fellowship of the Ring" found itself at number eight over the weekend with a $2.45 million haul, just behind "The Fall Guy" ($2.59 million). Landing at number nine was "The Two Towers," which pulled in $1.9 million. Warner Bros. and Fathom released both films on just over 1,500 screens. What's more, these were the 4K remastered, extended editions of the films, meaning they clocked in at nearly four hours each. Plus, they played just once each day across the country,...

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim is one of the most anticipated adaptations of Tolkien’s franchise without a doubt. This anime adaptation of one of Tolkien’s best stories is currently scheduled for a December 13, 2024 release, but the lucky people at the 2024 Annecy International Animation Film Festival have had the chance to actually see the first footage of the upcoming movie. We don’t know how much of it will change before the official premiere later this year, but we assume that it won’t be much, which is why the exclusive information we have from Annecy can be considered correct. So, what do we know?
In short, we can confirm that The War of the Rohirrim can indeed be considered an anime based on the production crew and staff. We can also confirm that Peter Jackson is coming back as executive producer and that...

Lord of the Rings Makes US Box Office Charts Comeback Following 4K Cinema Re-Release - Main Image
Lord of the Rings proved that it’s still hugely popular, enough that it reached the box office top 10 in the US this weekend. What makes this more impressive is that it achieved this feat with a limited re-release.
To be exact, the US box office top 10 chart over the weekend saw The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers in the eighth and ninth spots.
Even though it has been over two decades since the trilogy was initially released, the fact that they achieved box-office success again in a limited run might mean big things for the franchise moving forward.

Production on “Yellowjackets” Season 3 is well underway, and while we’ll likely have to wait until next year to watch it, star Christina Ricci does bring an exciting tease this week.

Ian McKellen Teases Return As Gandalf In The Lord Of The Rings: The Hunt For Gollum: "If I'm Alive!"
Back in March, we got word that a new The Lord of the Rings movie is set to hit theaters in 2026, with Andy Serkis on board to direct and reprise the role of Gollum.
Original Lotr trilogy director Peter Jackson and his writing partners Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens are also set to return as producers, and “will be involved every step of the way” according to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.
The movie's working title is The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, which should give you a pretty good idea of what the story will focus on! The movie will likely be set shortly before the events of Jackson's trilogy.
This time period is mentioned in both Tolkien's novels and the films, with Gandalf and Aragorn attempting to track Gollum down before he falls into Sauron's hands. In the movies, the wizard says he...

The first full weekend of June brought a modicum of hope to the summer box office, as Will Smith and Martin Lawrence reunited for the fourth installment of their popular “Bad Boys” action-comedy franchise. Read on for the weekend box office report.
“Bad Boys: Ride or Die” had been planned since 2020’s “Bad Boys for Life” became the highest-grossing blockbuster that year, partially due to Covid shutting down theaters a few weeks after its release. Opening in 3,885 theaters, including IMAX and other premium screens, “Ride or Die” received mixed reviews with 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, although it was expected to be fairly review-proof with the popularity of its two stars. It ended up making $5.88 million in Thursday previews beginning at 3pm, and $21.6 million on Friday, including those previews.

The actor-director’s second film behind the camera is a quirky spin on the genre given true grit by its magnetic heroine

Ian McKellen gave life to Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, and as Peter Jackson returns to Middle-earth with The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, many fans want to know if the actor would reprise his role.
In a new interview, McKellen has addressed if he would return to play the wizard created by J.R.R. Tolkien in the film set to be directed by Andy Serkis and due to premiere in 2026.
McKellen told The Times of London that he’s heard “stirrings in Tolkien land,” and due to his role in Player Kings, he hasn’t “shaved in months.”
“But there is no script, there is no offer, there is no plan,” he added, jokingly answering if he would be interested in reprising his role, “If I’m alive.”
In an interview with Deadline earlier this year, Jackson talked about why focusing on Gollum was interesting.

Not that long ago, we confirmed that Peter Jackson was indeed coming back to The Lord of the Rings franchise, but as a producer, and that a new movie had been confirmed for a 2026 release. The movie was soon revealed to be The Hunt for Gollum, and we also received confirmation that Andy Serkis would be coming back to the role that made him famous, but that he would also be directing the movie as well. As part of a large plan to revitalize The Lord of the Rings cinematic franchise, all of this news certainly seems interesting, and so are the casting rumors.
Serkis is the only confirmed actor so far, but we have reported recently that Viggo Mortensen is open to returning as Aragorn, and we have now received news of another cast member from the original trilogy expressing his desire to return to the franchise, but there is a very morbid catch.

In the vast and intricate world of fantasy literature, only a few names resonate as profoundly as George R. R. Martin and J.R.R. Tolkien. Martin’s successful work on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire, which inspired the hit TV series Game of Thrones, has taken inspiration from numerous popular fantasy works, one of which also includes Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

However, as much as he admires his work and admits that Tolkien has significantly influenced his work, Martin has also not refrained from openly sharing his criticism. However, despite his mixed feelings towards the author and his work, Martin has been humble enough to credit Tolkien for paving the way for the success of his own series.

Tom Bombadil, the enigmatic character from The Lord of the Rings saga, is finally stepping into the limelight. Known for his ethereal presence, nonsense songs, and brightly colored clothes, Bombadil has often puzzled fans due to his absence in both Ralph Bakshi’s 1978 animated film and Peter Jackson’s Oscar-winning trilogy. However, this unexpected twist is about to change as the Amazon Prime Video series ‘The Rings of Power’ will introduce him in its second season. A Character Cut From Previous Films Appears Rings of Power showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay shared their insights on why Tom Bombadil has been...

There's been chatter for a while now about plans for a new Wallace & Gromit movie and Aardman Animations has confirmed Vengeance Most Fowl is coming to the BBC in the UK this Christmas.
Don't worry, though, because - as we first reported on Toonado.com - it will debut on Netflix worldwide around the same time.
With a 70-minute runtime, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl will be the first feature-length adventure for these two since 2005's The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (2008's A Matter of Loaf and Death clocked in at less than 30 minutes).
The biggest news, however, is the fact this movie will feature the return of iconic villain, Feathers McGraw. The twisted penguin debuted in 1993's Oscar-winning The Wrong Trousers and, if that title is any indication, he's eager for revenge!

The BBC has officially unveiled the return of one of the U.K.’s favorite duos: Wallace & Gromit.
The pair are back and set for a brand new adventure, made by independent studio Aardman Animations, which will premiere on the BBC and BBC iPlayer this Christmas, as well as heading to Netflix worldwide this winter.
The new film, titled Vengeance Most Fowl, will be 70 minutes long and feature the return of the iconic supervillain Feathers McGraw, who is now back for revenge following his appearance in the Oscar-winning 1993 short The Wrong Trousers.
In Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, Gromit becomes increasingly concerned over Wallace’s dependence on his inventions. Things take a turn for the worst when Wallace’s creation “smart gnome” seems to develop an evil mind of its own. “As events begin to spiral out of control, it’s up to Gromit to put aside his qualms and battle sinister forces,...

“The Watchers” is the first film directed by Ishana Night Shyamalan, the 24-year-old daughter of M. Night Shyamalan. Its title refers to a race of spindly ash-gray monsters who haunt an Irish woods, gathering at night around a concrete fortress where the film’s four characters have holed up in a state of semi-permanent refuge. The building has just one room, an entire wall of which is a two-way mirror through which the Watchers peer, all because..they like to watch.
At the same time, the title could almost be referring to anyone who will watch this movie with eyes on the inevitable question of how much of a chip off the old Shyamalan block it is. Is “The Watchers” a glossy/clever mystery horror thriller? Yes. Did Ishana Night Shyamalan, whose father is one of the producers, write the movie as well as direct it? Yes (though she adapted...

Warner Bros. has announced new movies in the Lord of the Rings universe. The anime The War of the Rohirrim will be released later this year, and the main course is being prepared for 2026: the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
Andy Serkis will return to the role of Gollum, Peter Jackson will produce, and Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who worked on both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies, are among the screenwriters.
Does that sound like the biggest announcement of the year? No, it sounds like the biggest disappointment for fans of Tolkien and the original trilogy.
Who Asked For a Standalone Gollum Story on Big Screen?
It's not hard to understand why the new movie is built around Gollum – from a production standpoint. Gollum is the only central character in Lotr who hasn't aged in 20 years. Serkis can still play him,...

"Family Guy" fans will often try to claim that the show's best years were its original three-season run, but I'd argue that the show's peak was somewhere around season 6. The series' comedic style had fully found its groove by this point, not to mention that it really started to lean into the Brian/Stewie duo episodes that everyone loves so much. Best of all, this was the beginning of the show's annual "Star Wars" parody specials.
For three years in a row, we got to enjoy a version of "Star Wars" where all the characters were acting like "Family Guy" characters. It not only created a really fun guessing game of "Who are they gonna pick to play X?" but gave the writers a chance to bring their neurotic observational humor into this familiar cinematic world. It's one thing for Peter to repeatedly groan while clutching his knee; it's another...

Whether you asked for it or not, Prime Video’s epic fantasy series based on The Lord of the Rings appendices by legendary author J.R.R. Tolkien is back with its much-anticipated second season. Created by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, The Rings of Power had a pretty turbulent first season even with its massive budget of $1 billion but still it was one of the most watched shows on Prime Video, so maybe this season the creators of the series will change hearts and minds of frustrated fans.
In Season 2, Sauron has officially returned and after being cast out by Galadriel and without any allies he must rebuild his power through his cunning to oversee the creation of the Rings of Power. His ultimate plan with the rings is to bend the people of Middle-earth to his will. While the Dark Lord is rising our heroes are also getting ready for his eventual attack.

I am in a fix here with the Ross brothers’ 2023 film, Gasoline Rainbow. Usually, I admire the kind of cinema where nothing really happens; the likes of Richard Linklater’s Slacker (1991) and Jim Jarmusch’s Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) are what I’m talking about. These movies rely solely on the vibe and the conversations between characters; most of the time, I dig those. Gasoline Rainbow is a coming-of-age road-trip movie, which should remind you of movies like Andrea Arnold’s masterful American Honey (2016), a film I absolutely loved, and Harmony Korine’s super-trippy Spring Breakers (2012), which worked for me despite its erratic nature.
The reason I’m bringing up all these is because, while I thought there was a lot to love in Gasoline Rainbow, the whole thing fell quite short of my expectations. And while I convinced myself that I probably would have loved it if I saw it...

Viggo Mortensen had a career-defining role when he portrayed Aragorn in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. With the movies based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s successful novels, The Lord of the Rings joined in its successes. Combining all Box Office earnings from all three movies, The Lord of the Rings trilogy grossed a whopping $2.988 billion after its theatrical run. As one of its central characters, Viggo Mortensen became one of Hollywood’s most successful actors and recognizable faces in film’s fantasy genre. However, since the trilogy ended over two decades ago, Mortensen’s career seems to have dwindled.

Excitement for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 is heating up faster than a Helm’s Deep forge, with Tolkien fans eager to return to Middle-earth for more adventures in the beloved fantasy universe. Unfortunately, Nazanin Boniadi, who played Bronwyn, won’t return for new episodes of the Hobbit-inhabited series after briefly stepping away from acting in 2022.
For the uninitiated, Bronwyn is a human healer who gave birth to Theo (Tyroe Muhafidin) and engaged in a forbidden romance with the Silvan elf warrior Arondir (Ismael Cruz Cordova). Eagle-eyed fans clocked Bronwyn’s absence from The Rings of Power Season 2 teaser and have wondered if the character would return. When she’s not sharing her gifts on camera, Boniadi is a staunch activist, so she briefly left acting to focus her attention on the #WomanLifeFreedom movement in Iran.

On May 24, Netflix released the new sci-fi movie Atlas starring Jennifer Lopez — it immediately broke into the top 1 movies on the platform, where it still remains, and also received far from the best (or rather catastrophically bad) ratings on Rotten Tomatoes — 19% from critics and 49% from viewers.
And even though the Rt score is often out of sync with reality — there are a large number of truly worthy films with low ratings — in this case, Rotten Tomatoes score is accurately conveying the impressions left after watching the new blockbuster.
What Is Atlas About?
In the near future, humanity is using holographic interfaces, neural communication, and hypersonic engines. Scientist Val Shepherd creates an advanced android, Harlan, who accidentally gains self-awareness.
He subjugates other robots and enters into a fierce confrontation with humans, resulting in millions of casualties, after which Harlan flies to another galaxy and promises to return to cleanse Earth of humans.

After being excluded from both the classic 1978 animated movie and Peter Jackson's critically acclaimed trilogy, The Lord of the Rings will finally put the spotlight on Tom Bombadil in live-action when The Rings of Power returns for season 2 on August 29.
He first appeared in J. R. R. Tolkien's The Fellowship of the Ring, helping save Merry and Pippin from Old Man Willow, an angry tree in the Old Forest, that swallows them. In this series, we'll meet a younger version of "Old Tom" who has left Withywindle behind to make a second home in the ravaged Rhûn.
"There’s a reason why he hasn’t been in prior adaptations, because in some ways he’s sort of an anti-dramatic character," showrunner J.D. Payne tells Vanity Fair (via SFFGazette.com). "He’s not a character who has a particularly strong agenda. He observes drama, but largely doesn’t participate in it.

Big news just dropped over at Vanity Fair: a first look at a character set to appear in The Rings of Power season 2 who has to date only made it into a few older radio versions, games, and foreign-language adaptations of The Lord of the Rings—Tom Bombadil, played by Rory Kinnear. Peter Jackson’s King Kong was the ninth entry in the King Kong franchise. The film remains Jackson’s only monster movie and he didn’t return to direct a sequel film. But he was interested to see a sequel of the film from one director who has a lifelong fascination with monsters. Jackson thought it would be great if Guillermo del Toro helmed the sequel, after hearing rumors of it at San Diego Comic-Con in 2014.
