Shelley Duvall has been through the ringer. Once a staple in the works of Robert Altman – she didn’t work with another director between her 1970’s Brewster McCloud and 1977’s 3 Women – Duvall then had parts working for Woody Allen in Annie Hall and Stanley Kubrick in The Shining. But things sort of just fell apart and Duvall became a punchline, eventually retreating from the movie business entirely, spending the bulk of her time in Texas. Now, with her first movie in 20+ years, The Forest Hills, under her belt, she has some thoughts about the industry.
In a terrific new piece in The New York Times, Shelley Duvall said she was more or less betrayed by Hollywood. “I was a star; I had leading roles…People think it’s just aging, but it’s not. It’s violence.” Duvall doesn’t mean physical violence, however, adding, “How would you feel if people were really nice,...

Shelley Duvall is one of a kind. Upon seeing her work in Altman's 3 Women, Andrew Sarris compared her to "a young Katharine Hepburn," while Pauline Kael said she was the "closest thing we've ever come to a female Buster Keaton." And yet, the critic would also inevitably arrive at the same conclusion that she was unique. "There are no forebears or influences that would help to explain Shelley Duvall's acting; she doesn't seem to owe anything to anyone." And so, it's a tragedy that, nowadays, she's mostly remembered as the woman broken by Stanley Kubrick during The Shining's grueling shoot, a pop psychology misreading that's spread through social media despite Duvall's own words on the matter.
Infuriating, it's condescending to a great multi-hyphenated artist whose independence and ambition defined a decades-spanning career in entertainment. Let's keep the wonders of Duvall's work alive and bright,...

“You’re a fucking murderer, Rico!”
That is the first line of dialogue fans of Shelley Duvall can hear her speak after a 20-year absence from the screen, in a new trailer for The Forest Hills, which The Hollywood Reporter is debuting exclusively.
The actress, 73, who captivated audiences with idiosyncratic characters like Millie Lammoreaux from 1977’s Three Women and Wendy Torrance in 1980’s The Shining, has returned to acting with a surprise cameo in the indie horror film, written and directed by Scott Goldberg.
The part is Duvall’s first since 2002’s Like Manna From Heaven.
Forest Hills also features Dee Wallace, who played Elliott’s mother in 1982’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and Edward Furlong, who shot to fame playing John Connor in 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day.
In the trailer, Rico (Chico Mendez) is a tormented man wandering the forests of the Catskills Mountains.

The star of Carrie, Badlands and Coal Miner’s Daughter talks about losing her brother, working with Hollywood’s greats and infuriating Harvey Weinstein
‘Hey there! How are you!” hollers Sissy Spacek, as if she has just come across an old friend in the shopping mall. We’ve never met; I’m half an hour late for our video meeting and in a cold sweat. She is totally chilled and chuckles kindly at my incompetence.
Spacek has been one of my favourite actors for half a century. From the off, she starred in a series of fabulous films made by great directors: as 15-year-old Holly, who goes on a killing spree with her boyfriend in Terrence Malick’s brilliant debut Badlands; as the manipulative identity thief Pinky Rose in Robert Altman’s 3 Women; as blood-soaked Carrie in Brian De Palma’s classic adaptation of the Stephen King novel; as...

I have some good news and some bad news for those of us who are still actively mourning the cancellation of "Glow."
The bad news is, "Glow" is still canceled and there's probably nothing we can do to make it uncanceled. The good news is that the wrestling queen of mean, Betty Gilpin, is working on a new TV show. Showtime has ordered “Let the Right One In,” an adaptation of the 2008 Swedish movie (itself adapted from a novel), to series. This version will star Demián Bichir, Anika Noni Rose, Grace Gummer, Madison Taylor Baez, Kevin Carroll, Ian Foreman and Jacob Buster.
Andrew Hinderaker wrote the pilot and will serve as showrunner. He’ll executive produce along with Seith Mann, who directed the pilot and will also direct additional episodes.
“Let the Right One In” has a 10-episode order. It will begin production in New York City in early 2022.
The series version centers on Mark (Bichir) and his daughter Eleanor (Baez), whose lives were changed forever 10 years earlier when she was turned into a vampire. Locked in at age 12, perhaps forever, Eleanor lives a closed-in life, able to go out only at night, while her father does his best to provide her with the human blood she needs to stay alive.

Wise joins previously announced cast member Shailene Woodley. In the series, three women are on a crash course to radically overturn their lives.
Wise will play Sloane, a glamorous entrepreneur in a committed open marriage until two sexy new strangers threaten their aspirational love story.
In addition to Sloane, there is Lina, a homemaker in suburban Indiana who is a decade into a passionless marriage when she embarks on an affair that quickly becomes all-consuming and transforms her life, and Maggie, a student in North Dakota who weathers an intense storm after accusing her married English teacher of an inappropriate relationship. Gia (Woodley), a writer grieving the loss of her family, persuades each of these three spectacular “ordinary” women to tell her their stories, and her relationships with them change the course of her life forever.

Shailene Woodley, star of “Big Little Lies,” The Secret Life of the American Teenager” and “The Spectacular Now,” has joined Showtime’s upcoming hourlong series “Three Women” as a lead. The drama is a book-to-television adaptation of the nonfiction bestseller of the same name by Lisa Taddeo, who also executive produces the series.
The Pushcart Prize two-time winner and recipient of the Florence Engel Randall Award in fiction (2017) made her nonfiction debut this past summer with “Three Women,” published by Simon & Schuster. It tells the true multigenerational story of three American women— in their 20s, 30 and 40s —who suffered backlash for their sexual desires as well as their public and private pursuits of sexual independence and justice. The novel, which took Taddeo over a decade to research, report and write, remains in the Top 5 of the New York Times bestseller list for nonfiction books. The show is set to begin production in the fall.
