Bill Skarsgård reveals that audiences might not be ready for his transformative role in Robert Eggers’ upcoming Nosferatu. It took its toll,” he said of the character. “It was like conjuring pure evil. It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me. Bill Skarsgard says audiences may not be ready to see him in Nosferatu. The actor said this week his role in Robert Eggers’ upcoming remake of the silent vampire film “took its toll.”
“It was like conjuring pure evil. It took a while for me to shake off the demon that had been conjured inside of me,” Skarsgard told Esquire.
Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror was a 1922 silent film directed by F. W. Murnau, which was an unauthorized adaptation of Dracula that later became a cult classic. Eggers’ remake of the pic is set for release this Christmas. Nicholas Hoult, Lily-Rose Depp, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson, Simon McBurney and Willem Dafoe also star.
Skarsgard will play Count Orlok, the vampire antagonist. His costume and makeup have remained secret, but Skarsgard says he’s not sure audiences will recognize him. “He’s gross,” he said of the character. “But it is very sexualized.

Now that "Dune: Part Two" has crossed box office milestones and set up director Denis Villenueve to keep the spice flowing with a forthcoming "Dune 3," we can forget all about claims that Frank Herbert's original "Dune" novel was "unfilmable." We no longer need to worry that Villeneuve's adaptation would be too arcane and dense with sci-fi lore to appeal to mass audiences. We can simply take in his "Dune" duology for the breathtaking spectacle that it is.
The "Dune" discourse will likely veer toward the forthcoming threequel and the "Dune: Prophecy" series, set to hit Max this fall, but in the meantime, Villeneuve can simply revel in his latest blockbuster's success. But this isn't just a commercial win for Villeneuve. CinemaCon 2024 is well underway and the latest film to be given the sneak peek treatment is Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu." The upcoming horror remake from the "Northman" director will star Bill Skarsgård as the titular vamp, alongside Lily Rose-Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and Willem Dafoe. Until now, there's been no footage from the film or trailers released, but after the Universal presentation at CinemaCon, that's all changed.
Following in the footsteps of Werner Herzog's 1979 effort "Nosferatu the Vampyre," Eggers' film will reinterpret F.W. Murnau's 1922 "Dracula" adaptation "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror." The director has promised a gothic horror movie that will actually scare audiences, which is exactly what we were hoping to hear. But the real test for "Nosferatu" will be whether it can succeed where so many modern vampire films have failed — namely, at the box office. Still, with Eggers at the helm, this surely won't be another "Last Voyage of the Demeter...

Primetime Emmy-nominated composer Christopher Young has one hell of a resume in the horror world, lending his musical talents to fan-favorite films including A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Hellraiser, Hellbound: Hellraiser II, The Fly II, Tales from the Hood, Urban Legend, Drag Me to Hell, Sinister, and more recently 2020’s The Empty Man.
The legendary composer is back here in 2024 with Christopher Young’s Nosferatu – A Symphony of Horror, taking to Kickstarter to fan fund a Double CD release of his own award-winning orchestral score for the 1922 horror classic directed by F.W. Murnau.
The Kickstarter campaign previews, “In 2022, Christopher Young was engaged by Europäische FilmPhilharmonie to compose original music for the film in celebration of its 100th anniversary…the results were spectacular. How did you come to know our lord and savior, Count Orlok? If you're of a certain age, your first exposure might have come from the "SpongeBob SquarePants" episode "Graveyard Shift," in which the rascally vampire kept secretly flickering the lights during the night shift at the Krusty Krab. Or maybe you watched "Shadow of the Vampire," E. Elias Merhige's darkly comedic 2000 fictional account about the making of F.W. Murnau's 1922 German Expressionist classic "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror." Or perhaps you even saw Murnau's unauthorized "Dracula" adaptation itself or Werner Herzog's 1979 remake "Nosferatu the Vampyre" (which did away with any pretenses and just referred to Orlok as Count Dracula).
Whatever the case, Orlok has sunk his fangs deep into our collective pop-cultural consciousness these last 100-plus years. With his pallid visage, sunken eyes, and bald head, he just stands out from all those other blood-suckers, straddling the...

Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu will hit US cinemas on the 25th December, but the film currently has no UK date.
Nosferatu is going head to head with Sonic The Hedgehog 3 and Barry Jenkins’ Mufasa for the battle of the Christmas box office with a Christmas Day 2024 release date as reported by Deadline. That’s one heck of a triple bill, but one we are very excited for.
There’s no UK release date currently set for Nosferatu. Both Mufasa and Sonic 3 are in cinemas on 20th December in both US and UK so we can only hope that Nosferatu would also appear on the coveted 26th December release date as UK cinemas will be firmly closed on Christmas Day. We fear the film might get pushed to early 2025 though, but we’re trying to stay positive.

While vampire films have struggled to take a bite out of the box office lately, the patriarch of blood-sucker cinema, "Nosferatu," is coming back to show all those fanged foundlings how it's done. This new re-imagining of F.W. Murnau's officially unauthorized 1922 "Dracula" adaptation "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror" (the second of its kind after Werner Herzog's 1979 horror film "Nosferatu the Vampyre") hails from writer/director Robert Eggers -- and if the filmmaker is to be believed, this will be a truly terrifying affair to help wipe away the memories of all those lackluster movies about creatures of the night.
Eggers made a splash terrorizing audiences with his feature-length debut "The Witch" before helming "The Lighthouse" and "The Northman," both of which are frequently trippy and full of bizarre visuals and ghastly violence but aren't really trying too hard to scare you. That won't be the case with "Nosferatu,...

Johnny Depp once noticed a pattern with contemporary vampire films like Twilight that he wasn’t particularly fond of. So much so that he wanted to salvage his vision of the vampire sub-genre with his own film.
Johnny Depp hoped to create a real vampire movie with ‘Dark Shadows’ Johnny Depp | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
Depp felt the direction vampire films were headed in contradicted what the creature features were originally supposed to be about. He wanted to pay homage to the less glamorous vampires he grew up seeing on screen. The 1960s television series Dark Shadows had exactly the type of grotesque blood-suckers that he hoped to modernize.
”I remember sprinting home from school to see it. I loved it, this soap opera with gothic vampires. Jonathan Frid, who originally played Barnabas, was such a striking presence – there’s a sliver of him in there,” Depp once told Total Film...

Bad Bunny has teamed up with Steve Buscemi in a new music video for his song “Baticano,” based on the iconic 1922 silent horror film Nosferatu. Watch the video below.
Beginning with Buscemi working as a mad scientist in a lab, the video follows the wandering of his creation: the vampire Nosferatu, portrayed by Bad Bunny himself. Lip-syncing to the song, the Puerto Rican megastar moves through elegantly striking black-and-white sets, recreating shots from the F. W. Murnau-directed German Expressionist source material. As the video ends, Buscemi warns Nosferatu that Earth is “cruel” and “not ready” for him, as he is “too perfect for this world.”
But beyond being a fun, spooky romp, the “Baticano” video has a few strong messages illuminating some of the contradictions of society. At one point, a portrait of Jesus is shown hanging behind a man who is engaging in domestic violence. At another point,...

The legend of Dracula is explored from a new angle with The Last Voyage of the Demeter, based on “The Captain’s Log,” the seventh chapter in Bram Stoker’s influential novel.
The film’s home video release includes an audio commentary with director André Øvredal and producer Bradley J. Fischer, among other special features.
Here are eight things I learned from the Last Voyage of the Demeter commentary:
1. The Last Voyage of the Demeter spent 21 years in development.
Phoenix Pictures acquired the rights to the film, originally titled Demeter, over two decades before the movie made its way to the screen.
“It’s been a solid 21 years since my producing partners, Mike Medavoy, Arnie Messer, and I, optioned the screenplay that we adapted into this film,” Fischer explains at the beginning of the commentary.

The film’s home video release includes an audio commentary with director André Øvredal and producer Bradley J. Fischer, among other special features.
Here are eight things I learned from the Last Voyage of the Demeter commentary:

Some cliche somewhere said that ‘a picture is worth a thousand words.’ This has proven to be the case for me and especially when it comes to fan art. I have always sought out great fan art and have wanted to share it with as many people as possible. “Awesome Art We’ve Found Around The Net” is the outlet for that passion. In this column, I will showcase the kick-ass artwork of some great artists, with the hopes that these artists get the attention they deserve. That’s the aim. At 81 years of age, over 60 films and as many years into his career, Werner Herzog is a man who has seen some stuff. Here is a man who has dragged a ship over a mountain for Fitzcarraldo, climbed a volcano set to erupt, had an entire cast hypnotised on Heart Of Glass, eaten his own shoe after losing a bet, and been shot at by an air-rifle wielding sniper mid-interview – and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Speaking of which, he’s also made a movie in actual Antarctica, where the sun rises and sets only once a year. But if, like us, you’d imagine all these incredible experiences must make for some even wilder dreams, then you’d be very wrong. Werner Herzog hardly even dreams at all.

Melissa Barrera, star of the hugely successful recent Scream reboot, is set to lead the cast of The One, described as an “erotic nightmare” set within the confines on the reality dating show, which Riley Keough is set to produce.
The film, from writer-director duo Kevin Armento and Jaki Bradley, will see Barrera (whose upcoming projects also include Your Monster and The Collaboration) star alongside Nicholas Hoult (The Great, upcoming Nosferatu for Robert Eggers and Clint Eastwood’s Juror #2) and Lana Condor (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken).
The One follows Taylor (Barrera), who makes a last-ditch effort to find love by becoming a contestant on a reality dating show. Now down to just herself and two other women competing to win the heart of Mason (Hoult), Taylor begins to feel the artifice of the show fade, and the game becomes terrifyingly real. Nicolas Cage (Renfield) and writer-director Andrew Niccol (Anon) will reteam with Vendôme Pictures, the Academy Award winning studio behind Coda, on Lords of War — a sequel to the 2005 crime thriller Lord of War, which starred Cage as Yuri Orlov, a composite character based on numerous arms dealers.
Bill Skarsgård (John Wick: Chapter 4) is also on board to star as Orlov’s son, with FilmNation Entertainment to rep international sales and introduce the film at Cannes, and CAA Media Finance to handle domestic rights.
In Lords of War, Yuri Orlov (Cage), the world’s most notorious gunrunner, discovers he has a son, Anton (Skarsgård), who isn’t trying to right his father’s wrongs — he’s trying to top them. Not only selling guns but the “trigger pullers” too, Anton is amassing a mercenary army to fight America’s Middle East conflicts. This is the story of Yuri and Anton’s...

Nicholas Hoult had to do something that few Hollywood people ever dream of: turn down Tom Cruise.
The “Renfield” star revealed that after initially being cast as the main villain in “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” in January 2020, he had to part ways with production to finish Hulu series “The Great” Season 3. “Bad Boys” actor Esai Morales went on to replace Hoult in the blockbuster sequel.
“I screen-tested for ‘The Batman’ and didn’t get it. Screen-tested for ‘Top Gun,’ didn’t get it,” Hoult told The Guardian. “Then I got the call from Tom Cruise, ‘Hey, how about “Mission: Impossible”?’ Ok. Got it. Then I had to drop out because I was already attached to do some more of ‘The Great.'”

Legendary actor and filmmaker Clint Eastwood is closing in on his next project, with plans to direct “Juror No. 2.”
The legal drama is set up at Warner Bros., with Nicholas Hoult and Toni Collette circling the lead roles. Eastwood will direct from a script by Jonathan Abrams. He will also produce the project alongside Adam Goodman, Tim Moore, Jessica Meier and Matt Skiena. Executive producers are Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Jeremy Bell.
“Juror No. 2” will take place during a murder trial and follows a juror (Hoult), who realizes that he may have caused the victim’s death. He must decide whether to manipulate the jury to save himself, or reveal the truth and turn himself in. Collette would play the prosecutor.
Warner Bros. is nearing a green light on the project, with a production start eyed for June, following Eastwood’s 93rd birthday on May 31.

Although first inclinations might caution one to expect some wildly over-the-top performances in something like Renfield, especially given some of the talented names involved, the film manages to deliver a uniquely entertaining comedic/horror experience that never strays too far from the essence of both genres.
This modern take on the classic monster tale follows Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) as he serves as the preparer of his master’s – who happens to be Dracula (Nicolas Cage) – meals and the procurer of his other needs and wants. Now, however, after attending a support group for victims of codependency in an effort to gather victims for his master, Renfield begins to believe that perhaps there may be a life for him that doesn’t depend on his never-ending servitude to The Prince of Darkness.

Vampire movies go back over 100 years, offering audiences a wide assortment of different takes on the mythical creatures. From horror to comedy, and a delightful blend between the two, these blood-sucking creatures have remained a part of mainstream cinema for many years. The fantastical horror comedy Renfield brings a new twist to the Dracula and Renfield relationship, but here are five vampire movies to check out along with it and where you can watch them.

The original 1931 Dracula is one of the classic Universal Horror movie monsters, making the titular character one of the most iconic images when it comes to vampire movies. It seemed great on paper. Nicolas Cage as Dracula? It’s a role he was born to play; it’s a wonder it hasn’t happened before now (sorry, Vampire’s Kiss doesn’t count).
Renfield, Dracula’s long-suffering servant — or in vampire parlance, “familiar” — plagued by co-dependency issues and seeking help in a support group? Sounds hilarious. An original story by Robert Kirkman, creator of The Walking Dead? I’m there.
So why does Renfield downplay those promising aspects and turn out to be such a bloody mess?
The film, stemming from Universal’s understandable continuing attempts to capitalize on its classic monsters IP, certainly starts out promisingly. Renfield, played by Nicholas Hoult, provides background information about his relationship with the vampire in his life, illustrating his narration with nothing less than scenes from the 1931 classic Tod Browning film Dracula. Cage and Hoult are digitally inserted into the footage, replacing...

With the exception of the Count himself, Renfield is the most dynamic character in the Dracula story. Originally conceived as a madman in Dr. Seward’s sanitarium with a mysterious connection to his vampire overlord, Renfield has evolved with the ever-extending mythos that has arisen around Stoker’s original creation.
Since the earliest Dracula films, the character has changed and deepened, become more and less integral to the story depending on the focus of the filmmakers, but has always been an opportunity for great character actors to let loose and give some of the most memorable performances in horror cinema.
This week, Renfield will finally get his moment at center stage, with Nicholas Hoult becoming the latest actor to bite into the role. In anticipation of his starring turn, here is a look at some of the very best depictions of everyone’s favorite fly-eating maniac.

As the upcoming "Ahsoka" live-action series hovers on the horizon, the recent Star Wars Celebration announcement of Lars Mikkelsen taking up the blue make-up to reprise his legendary animated voice role in the full-bodied flesh sent waves of excitement through Star Wars fans. A main baddie for the final half of the "Star Wars Rebels" animated series created by Dave Filoni (showrunning again for "Ahsoka"), the ice-blue Chiss Admiral proved to be a formidable and terrifying threat to the Ghost crew. Mitth'raw'nuruodo's (Thrawn's Chiss name) epic (re)entrance into the public consciousness provided fond memories for Celebration attendees back in 2016, especially for the generation who grew up with the Legends novels that started with Timothy Zahn's 1991 "Heir to the Empire." That book kicked off an enduring Legends reign for Thrawn as an intelligent Imperial tactician who had no nonsense for Imperial stupidity.

One of the highlights of this year’s Overlook Film Festival was attending the premiere of Renfield, with Nicolas Cage and director Chris McKay in attendance. Having seen the film, I can confidently say that horror fans are going to have a lot of fun with this one. This film has a great energy to it, with an equal mix of horror, comedy, and action that reminded me a lot of the tone of Ash vs. Evil Dead.
Not only did I have a chance to catch up with both Nicolas Cage and Chris McKay on the red carpet prior to the screening, but they took part in a post-screening Q&a. Highlights from both events are below and I’ve kept this spoiler free, only loosely referencing elements that have been shown in the trailer.

Eight years after the project was first announced, writer/director Robert Eggers‘ remake of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu (watch it Here) is finally in production, with filming taking place in Prague. The Witch and The Northman director Robert Eggers is already hard at work shooting his next film, but that doesn't mean there aren't casting announcements to report. According to Deadline, Aaron Taylor-Johnsonis aboard Eggers' Nosferatu.
A new version of the vampire tale originally shot by Fw Murnau in 1922, this Nosferatu already stars Lily-Rose Depp, Bill Skarsgard, Nicholas Hoult, Willem Dafoe and Emma Corrin.
The story is a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman (Depp) in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire (Skarsgard) who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.
And Taylor-Johnson isn't alone in joining the cast – Eggers is also adding Simon McBurney and reuniting with Ralph Ineson, who appeared in both The Witch and The Northman. The director is filming in Prague, but the movie has yet to lock down a release date.
