Sean Baker's latest sex-worker comedy, Anora, screens at Cannes this week and this is a chance to catch up with his Oscar-nominated comedy drama about a precocious six-year-old and her mum. The Magic Castle hotel might not hold many tricks up its sleeve for single mum Hallee (Bria Vinaite) but it's an enchanted playground so far as little Moonee (Brooklynn Prince) and her friends are concerned. They run – and skip and frolic – through the film with an infectious energy, while illustrating the unique pressures that exist for families who live in these sorts of circumstances. Young Prince is a natural and it's a treat to see Willem Dafoe in a warmer role for once, as the benevolent Magic Castle manager Bobby trying to nudge the older members of the community into line. Fusion Entertainment has signed Bria Vinaite, an actress who got her breakout role as a woman living on the economic fringes in Sean Baker’s “The Florida Project.”
The Lithuania-born actress was discovered by filmmaker Baker when she was working in the fashion industry and cast in the lead part of a struggling single mother raising her daughter in a motel. Her performance earned Vinaite multiple award nominations from critics groups including Chicago Film Critics Association and San Diego Film Critics Association.
Since “The Florida Project” debuted in 2017, Vinaite has gone on to act in TV series including “The Oa” and films such as “Balance Not Symmetry” and “Lost in Transmissions.” Next year, she will star in “Pandemonium,” the latest feature from Icelandic filmmaker Anton Sigurdsson. Exclusive: Sugar23 has signed rising star Brooklynn Prince, on the heels of her new film Cocaine Bear‘s opening weekend triumph, with a current worldwide gross of $28M+ at the worldwide box office, against a production budget of roughly $30M.
The R-rated horror-comedy directed for Universal by Elizabeth Banks has broken out as one of the early success stories of 2023, affirming that original features, and those in the comedy arena, can certainly still perform in today’s marketplace. Based loosely on real events that took place in 1985, the film watches as a duffel bag’s worth of cocaine drops from a drug smuggler’s plane and winds up in a Georgia forest, becoming a favorite snack for a hulking black bear. An electric set of unfortunate souls, including Prince, Keri Russell and Christian Convery, are then subject to the animal’s murderous rampage.

Few movie endings over the last several years have proven to be as divisive as “The Florida Project,” Sean Baker’s 2017 drama about a single mother and her young daughter living in a Florida budget motel on the outskirts of Walt Disney World. The film, now streaming on Netflix, world-premiered to universal acclaim at Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes, but even admirers of Baker’s slice-of-life vision have found the film’s last one minute sequence to be tough to swallow. Baker makes such a jarring filmmaking shift that it’s hard to enjoy “The Florida Project” finale, and yet it’s without a doubt one of the most perfect and most fitting movie endings in recent memory.

This premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, and also stopped by the Shanghai, Nashville, Whistler, and Glasgow Film Festivals. When an acclaimed music producer goes off his meds for schizophrenia, a young songwriter chases him though La's music scene trying to get him psychiatric care, revealing the troubling inadequacies of our mental health care system in the process. Based on a true story, Lost Transmissions is an intimate look at human emotions and the devastating reality of treating mental illness in a system that doesn’t seem equipped to deal with it. Starring Simon Pegg and Juno Temple, with Jamie Harris, Tao Okamoto, Rebecca Hazlewood, Bria Vinaite, and Alexandra Daddario. Looks a bit cheesy but might be alright. Here's the...

Bria Vinaite again proves her star quality in this earnest coming-of-age film co-scripted by Biffy Clyro frontman Simon Neil
There are moments you may have to bite your lip very hard to stifle harrumphs of exasperation watching this drifty on-the-the-fly Glaswegian indie drama about a young woman grieving for her dad and struggling to finish her art-school graduation show. Before Bria Vinaite landed her breakout role in Sean Baker’s Oscar-nominated 2017 film “The Florida Project,” she was selling marijuana-themed outerwear on Instagram. Raised in Brooklyn and born in Lithuania, she had the specific kind of no-nonsense vibe Baker was seeking for the role of Halley, a single mother and sex worker living with her daughter in a rundown Florida motel next to Disney World. Along with Brooklynn Prince, another Baker discovery who played Halley’s daughter, Moonee, Vinaite earned unadulterated praise for her raw and charismatic performance. Once the film entered the awards race and picked up a slew of accolades, Vinaite’s life changed drastically, launching a burgeoning acting career for which she had very little preparation.

Edinburgh International Film Festival has today announced Jamie Adams' drama Balance, Not Symmetry will be this year's People's Gala, while animated musical adventure UglyDolls, starring Kelly Clarkson, will be the Family Gala.
Organisers describe Balance, Not Symmetry as "a beautiful cinematic tribute to art, music and Scotland (and Glasgow in particular)".
It was made in close conjunction with the Scottish band Biffy Clyro, who worked on both the storyline and the score and stars Laura Harrier (Spider-Man: Homecoming) as a Scottish-American art student who is studying at Glasgow School of Art, and whose privileged existence is thrown into a spin when her father unexpectedly dies. Torn between supporting her mother (Kate Dickie) and dealing with her own sense of loss, she finds herself re-examining her life and friends. She finds inspiration from provocative fellow student Hannah.

How much can a pair of tremendous performances elevate a feature? Is a movie ultimately flawed if the acting is what makes it worth seeing? On the flip side, can a duo on screen drag a film across the finish line? If you’ve read my reviews in the past, you’ll know I think that performance can overcome other flaws, so Lost Transmissions is in luck. One of the titles to have just played at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival, it’s a flick that needed the acting within it in order to survive. Just what do I mean? Well, read on for more… The film is a melodrama about two troubled individuals, though one is struggling way more with mental illness. For Hannah (Juno Temple), life is hard, but she’s not suffering like Theo Ross (Simon Pegg). When they meet at a party, she’s charmed by the music producer.

The 2017 Cannes Film Fest was of a great year for films full of non-actors. Sean Baker’s “The Florida Project” introduced us to the excellent talents of Brooklynn Prince and Bria Vinaite. Then Chloe Zhao’s “The Rider” uniquely told South Dakota cowboy Brady Jandreau’s real-life story with him playing a fictional version of himself.

Bria Vinaite, who broke out as the lead actress in “The Florida Project,” will portray a musician in the feature drama “Violent Delights,” Variety has learned.
The project will be introduced to buyers in the fall. Taylor DeVoe is directing and writing “Violent Delights,” the story of three young musicians whose inner demons threaten to derail their budding careers as the European leg of their band tour kicks off. The trio — disenchanted Dillon, addiction-plagued Felix and new-age misfit Skipper — hope to rekindle past relationships and find meaning while in Paris but find themselves instead in middle of a mass shooting.
Vinaite portrayed the role of Halley, a former stripper and single mother living with her six-year-old daughter in a budget motel, in “The Florida Project.”
“Bria brought such an unfettered honesty to her debut performance in ‘The Florida Project’; everyone was just blown away by her,” said DeVoe. “Because this...

Acting is pretending. Great acting is doing it in such a way that audiences forget the artifice and buy into the reality of the character completely. Not many are likely to mistake what Marion Cotillard does in “Angel Face” for great acting, as the glamorous French star gives a performance so phony it feels like a “Saturday Night Live” parody of a white-trash trainwreck, downright pathetic in its attempt to achieve what came so naturally to relative amateur Bria Vinaite in last year’s “The Florida Project.”
Buried under garish makeup and a ton of glitter, this Côte d’Azur project looks suspiciously as if first-time director Vanessa Filho caught Sean Baker’s ebullient unfit-mother movie last year at Cannes and tried to do the same thing, with markedly less convincing results. In France, Cotillard isn’t taken all that seriously to begin with, which won’t help the film’s domestic chances,...

As promised, Drake dropped a new song Friday night, a Lauryn Hill-sampling smooth groove called “Nice for What.” Along with the song came a video that features 20 famous (and kind-of famous but fabulous) women, most of them actresses or musicians: Olivia Wilde, Misty Copeland, Issa Rae, Rashida Jones, Jourdan Dunn, Tracee Ellis Ross, Tiffany Haddish, Yara Shahidi, Zoe Saldana, Letitita Wright, Bria Vinaite, Emma Roberts, Syd, Michelle Rodriguez and Elizabeth and Victoria Lejonhjarta. All are filmed separately.
Directed by 22-year-old Toronto native Karena Evans — who also helmed Drake’s clip for “God’s Plan,” which featured him giving away $1 million to various people and organizations in need — the clip doesn’t have a plot, just Drake performing while the ladies groove.
The song samples “Ex Factor,” one of the most popular tracks from the 1999 classic “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” Drake previously sampled Hill’s “Doo Wop (That Thing),” from the same album,...

New Indie For a straight white guy, writer-director Sean Baker tells some of the most compassionate and empathetic stories about marginalized communities. The man behind Tangerine and Starlet returns with The Florida Project (Lionsgate Home Entertainment), a powerful tale of a young girl (played indelibly by Brooklynn Prince) and her barely-getting-by mother (Bria Vinaite) as they eke out a day-to-day existence in a Crayola-colored motel in the shadow of Walt Disney World. Willem Dafoe received richly deserved Oscar and Independent Spirit nominations for his turn as the hotel’s compassionate manager. Not always an easy watch – and I love the ending, even though it’s been divisive – this is a powerful and heartfelt story of people just trying to make it in...

The Florida Project tells the story of Moonee (Brooklyn Prince), a precocious six-year-old and her ragtag group of friends. The children’s summer break is filled with wonder, mischief and adventure while the adults around them struggle with hard times.
The story takes place just outside of Orlando, the vacation capital of the world and home to “The Most Magical Place on Earth.” Along the main highway that runs through the land of theme parks and resorts, budget motels that once attracted tourists by exploiting the Disney mystique, now house homeless families.
Moonee and her twenty-two year old mother, Halley (Bria Vinaite), live at one such establishment — The Magic Castle Motel. The closest thing Moonee has to a father is Bobby (Willem Dafoe), the motel’s manager,...

“The Florida Project” centers around a group of lovable kids who have no problem dreaming big, and the same could be said for their acting counterparts. The young actors Brooklynn Prince, Valeria Cotto, and Christopher Rivera recently joined “The Florida Project” distributor A24 for a group discussion about their dream film projects, and let’s just say these little kids have got major vision.
Prince, whose star turn as the troublemaker Moonee made her one of the breakthrough talents of 2017, told A24 she’s been cooking up a Broadway-set musical romance starring herself opposite Emma Watson and John Boyega. How’s that for a pitch? Watson proved her singing chops in Disney’s blockbuster live action “Beauty and the Beast.” Prince estimates the film will need a budget of “$14,000 or $1,400.” She wants to direct the film but fully expects to ask Sean Baker for lots of filmmaking advice.

Sean Baker is one of independent cinema's most audacious directors.
Often focusing on stories rarely told, and representing groups who we don't typically get to see on the big screen, Baker's interests lie in the undiscovered and under-represented. Take for example his last film, Tangerine, which followed two African-American trans-gendered prostitutes, and starred two trans actresses.
With The Florida Project, Baker takes a perspective that is hard to execute successfully, as he channels childhood in a way unlike anything we've ever experienced. Told through the eyes of six-year-old Moonee, The Florida Project deals with poverty in an almost surreal way. It does so brilliantly, and therefore is one of our favourite films of the year.

Sean Baker may be a new name to Oscar voters, but IndieWire readers have long been aware of his unique approach to filmmaking. “The Florida Project” has introduced Baker to a wider audience, many of whom were blown away by his latest film’s raw emotion and unparalleled naturalism. Ardent admirers would be wise to revisit Baker’s earlier works, such as “Take Out” (2004), “Prince of Broadway” (2008), and of course, the highly acclaimed “Tangerine” (2015). “The Florida Project” is the culmination of many of the skills Baker honed in his earlier work; he has perfected the quality issue film, exploring social themes with insightful and nuanced filmmaking without sacrificing artistry.

IndieWire recently reached out to a number of directors to share their lists and thoughts on the best of the year. 42 filmmakers responded, supplying a wide range of interesting insights into the best of 2017, but few were as eloquent and effusive as the great Spanish auteur and noted cinephile Pedro Almodóvar.
In writing about the films he loved this year, Almodóvar not only got at the heart of what makes each film great, he often put the directors’ work in a larger context with historical comparisons that are meant as the highest form of praise. For example, in discussing Yorgos Lanthimos’ direction of “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” he wrote the “weird, unsettling, original, uneasy film” reminded him “of the best of Kubrick” and how “Nicole Kidman shines in her role of mother and wife, in the same abstract tessitura as in ‘Eyes Wide Shut.'”

“For me, Spike Lee was always one that really did it right,” Baker said. “He would have big A-list stars in his films, and then he would always give fresh faces to some of the bigger supporting characters. He would be introducing so many new faces to the world, new talent to the industry, which is I think really important.”
“The Florida Project” has received glowing reviews (IndieWire gave it an A-, and it’s currently rated 95 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and received multiple awards, including Golden Globes and SAG nominations for Dafoe.

As this is the actors guild, it's a special honour to be nominated here because all of the voters are fellow thespians, and this is the one awards show that exclusively has actors voting in their favourite performances of the year. Some notable omissions from this list of nominees includes Armie Hammer, who seemed like a lock for a Best Supporting Actor nomination for Call Me By Your Name, Jessica Chastain for Molly's Game, Brooklynn Prince and Bria Vinaite from The Florida Project, and nobody from The Post.

Chicago – The eclectic coming-of-age love story, “Call Me By Your Name” topped the nominations list with eight for the 2017 Chicago Film Critics Association (Cfca) Film Awards, to be announced on Wednesday, December 13th. Director Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of Andre Aciman’s novel garnered nods for Best Picture, Guadagnino for Best Director, and acting noms for Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg and Timothee Chalamet.
The rest of the field for Best Picture has a variety of genres and themes. Christopher Nolan’s epic “Dunkirk” shares the stage with Greta Gerwig’s intent autobiographical “Lady Bird,” Guillermo Del Toro’s magical “The Shape of Water” and the strange-but-heralded “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The symbolic horror of “Get Out” got first time director Jordan Peele a nomination (joining first timer Greta Gerwig), the late Harry Dean Stanton was recognized for Best Actor in “Lucky,” and Willem Dafoe got a Best Supporting Actor nomination for “The Florida Project.
