For the latest season of TCM and Novel’s “The Plot Thickens” podcast, host Ben Mankiewicz became a treasure hunter. Maybe part of him always was, as the job of a film historian is often to find and showcase work that’s been lost. Taking it a step further, introducing others to any new film for the first time can make one feel like Indiana Jones discovering the Ark of the Covenant and Mankiewicz emulates that experience with “The Plot Thickens.” In Season 5, Mankiewicz examines the life and works of filmmaker John Ford, using audio conversations with Katherine Hepburn, Woody Strode, John Wayne, and others to illuminate our understanding of the masterful, yet mercurial director. But there’s an added adventure within Mankiewicz’ journey towards understanding Ford that sees the critic and personality cross oceans, brave harsh weather, and come face-to-face with the horrors of the past.

British royal family news shows that Meghan Markle has been called many things. This is why Princess Pinocchio aka the Nigerian Princess could next be called Princess Henry.
According to a royal expert Ingrid Stewart, if Meghan were to lose her title as the Duchess of Sussex, she would be known by her husband Prince Harry’s title, thus be called Princess Henry, Henry being Harry’s legal name.
Seward told The Royal Beat that Meghan’s name change would occur should King Charles listen to the masses and strip these two traitors of their coveted titles.

Jon Stewart returned to The Daily Show on Monday for the first time since former President Donald Trump was found guilty on 34 felony counts stemming from a hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.
Stewart dug into both sides of the media, first mocking liberal outlets by saying the conviction “was an exercise in concealed and controlled glee” and that the Democratic party’s next hurdle would be figuring out how to “exploit the moment politically without giving the impression that this was the plan all along.”

Jon Stewart slammed the media’s response to Donald Trump’s hush money conviction during The Daily Show on Monday, criticizing conservative outlets’ denial of the trial’s legitimacy and denouncing both sides’ polarized coverage of the event.
Last Thursday, a New York jury found the former president guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records after weeks of testimony from a former tabloid publisher, a Hollywood fixer, Trump’s former lawyer and a porn star. He will be sentenced on July 11.
In response to Republican commentators’ claims that the trial was rigged, Stewart said: “Yes, we impaneled grand juries and submitted evidence and cross-examined witnesses… But how was Donald Trump or his family not allowed on the jury? Outrageous!”
Later, while discussing the media’s weaponization of the court system, Stewart said, “Maybe our justice system wasn’t a sham, but certainly applying our justice system to Donald Trump was.

A utility truck used by Astound Broadband.
Astound Broadband has launched a new low-cost Internet offering that allows customers to sign up for high-speed service for as little as $10 per month.
The offering, called Internet First, is aimed at low-income Americans who were impacted by the ending of the Affordable Connectivity Program (Acp), a government subsidy that reduced the cost of home Internet service by $30.
There are two tiers of service through Internet First: A $10 per month plan that offers average download speeds of 50 Megabits per second (Mbps), and a $20 per month plan that increases the download speed between 100 and 150 Mbps.
Both plans include a standard modem that offers basic wireless Internet coverage. Astound says its whole-home Wi-Fi solution, which improves the internet signal through two included Eero-brand routers, is available for $5 per month for 12 months.
As with the Affordable Connectivity Program, Internet First requires households to prove their status as low-income.

The Washington Post is launching a new digital newsroom that aims to reach consumers on non-traditional platforms like Twitter and Facebook, the organization said on Monday.
The newsroom — its third overall — will utilize artificial intelligence (AI) solutions to produce more visual-storytelling, the Post said. It will also offer “flexible payment methods” for consumers who want to support the Post’s new digital news offerings, though it didn’t offer any insight into how that will work.
The venture will be separate, but complementary, to the Post’s core newsroom, which is focused on creating print and video journalism in a traditional sense, distributed across the legacy newspaper format and the Washington Post website and apps.

Does the world seem like it's more complicated and confusing than it used to be?
When you look at the way people lived in previous generations, are you struck by a vague sense that you missed out on something?
Do you sometimes feel as though it just hasn't been your day, your week, your month -- or even your year?
If so, you're not alone.
This might sound like the voice-over that plays over a beach volleyball scene in a commercial for the latest magic-bullet anti-depressant, but it's actually the beginning of an attempt to understand the viewing habits of tens of millions of Netflix customers.
A Surprising Trend
You see, in most previous decades, one of the defining traits of young people was a rabid interest in all things new and innovative, often to the exclusion of anything deemed "old."
That's still the case for members of Generation Z in most areas.

Godzilla Minus One became the first Japanese film to be nominated for an Oscar. Director Takashi Yamazaki and his VFX team won the Best Visual Effects Oscar, a deserving recognition for the film. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the former CDC director, endured criticism during a House hearing on Monday morning for his response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Fauci declared he has “nothing to hide” in his opening statement before the Select Subcommittee on the Covid-19 Pandemic.
Conservatives have hammered him on his response to the virus – everything from mask mandates to vaccine guidelines and even origin possibilities.
“Americans were aggressively bullied, shamed and silenced for merely questioning or debating issues such as social distancing, masks, vaccines or the origins of Covid,” Ohio Rep. Brad Wenstrup stated as the hearing started.
Wenstrup, who stated that he wanted accountability in the hearing, accused Fauci of promoting “one of the most invasive regimes of domestic policy the U.S. has ever seen.”
Fauci mentioned these issues during his opening statement, labeling certain matters “seriously distorted.”

Over the past two decades, the Supreme Court has been captured by dark-money interests, and justices are reshaping our laws and society according to their reactionary, far-right vision. It’s a problem that would only be compounded with a second Donald Trump administration pursuing an extreme, right-wing policy agenda.
Trump’s judicial adviser, Leonard Leo, who helped select three Supreme Court justices, can take pride in his work. His network, which recently received a historic $1.6 billion infusion, spent millions to confirm those justices, and works to influence both the justices’ caseload and their decisions.

With the 1995 release of "Godzilla vs. Destoroyah," Toho ended the Heisei era of their Godzilla films in earnest and, in an unprecedented move, handed the reigns of their most popular monster over to TriStar Pictures for a proposed three-picture deal. Rather than make a typical mid-budget film, TriStar elected to make a major summer tentpole, pouring about $150 million into production and hiring "Independence Day" director Roland Emmerich. The film was a 139-minute FX bonanza that reimagined Godzilla as a sleek, square-jawed iguana that terrorized New York City. The monster was small enough to hide inside skyscrapers and spent large portions of the film offscreen in New York's sewers.
The script was more comedic than awe-inspired, populated by chattering Noo Yawk characters whose reactions to Godzilla were more along the lines of "weary acceptance" than awe. The cast would end up featuring Matthew Broderick, Maris Pitillo, Jean Reno, Kevin Dunn, and...

Sally Buzbee is stepping down as executive editor of The Washington Post after three years, as the publication plans to alter the structure of the newsroom leadership.
Matt Murray, former editor in chief of The Wall Street Journal, will succeed Buzbee through the 2024 election. Then, Robert Winnett, deputy editor of The Telegraph Media Group, will take on the new role as editor of the Post, responsible for overseeing core coverage areas including politics, investigations, business, technology, sports and features.
The newsroom restructuring will include the creation of a new division “dedicated to better serving audiences who want to consume and pay for news differently from traditional offerings.” That will include service and social media journalism that is run separately from the core news operation, the Post said.
Buzbee’s exit is the biggest leadership shake up at the Jeff Bezos-owned media property since new publisher and CEO Will Lewis joined the publication in January.

In an impassioned appeal, President Joe Biden’s wife, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, has called on Americans to “choose good over evil” by supporting her husband in the upcoming 2024 election.

As the nonfiction space continues to weather larger difficulties in the entertainment and journalism industries, a global nonprofit focused on helping documentarians connect is expanding its reach with some help from the Knight Foundation.
With an investment from Knight Foundation, the Video Consortium will partner with local newsrooms to help build out and strengthen their video strategy. They will bring in talent and help train local video journalists.
“We’ll be working with them, wherever they are, to make sure that the stories that they’re telling are authentic and reflect the communities they work in,” says Sky Dylan-Robbins, founder and executive director of the Video Consortium.
Dylan-Robbins, herself a journalist and filmmaker having previously worked at NBC News and The New Yorker, started the Video Consortium nearly a decade ago, offering clarity on issues from finding funding to finding distribution, all of which can be difficult to navigate, even for mid-career filmmakers.

Update: President Joe Biden responded to Donald Trump’s claim that he was orchestrating his prosecution and conviction.
“I didn’t know I was that powerful,” Biden told Fox News’ Peter Doocy as the president left the White House this evening, per a pool report.
Doocy also asked Biden whether he is worried that “this could happen to you someday.”
“Not at all. I didn’t do anything wrong. The system still works,” Biden said.
The president also said he had “no idea” whether the conviction will help his rival’s presidential campaign.
Meanwhile, the Trump campaign has keyed in to one moment during Biden’s remarks earlier in the day. After speaking to reporters at the White House, the president turned to leave and was asked by NBC News’ Kelly O’Donnell about Trump’s claim that he is a “political prisoner” and that he blames Biden directly.

Donald Trump has been cashing in on his new title of convicted felon.
Rolling Stone reported earlier this week that the former president’s team expected a guilty verdict in the hush-money trial and were preparing a fundraising blitz as soon as the jury handed down a decision. The blitz came just minutes after Trump was found guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records with which he was charged, and on Friday morning, his campaign announced they had raised a whopping $34.8 from small-dollar donations following the verdict.

90 Day Fiance: The Other Way Season 6 got a trailer dropped by TLC and fans are not happy that certain members of the cast return. The new season premieres on TLC on July 1, and it brings four new couples. Naturally, viewers seem keen on the new faces, but not on the oldies.
90 Day Fiance: The Other Way Had Unpopular Cast
Unpopular people returned to the show often, and sometimes, it’s against an outcry to stop them. Deavan Clegg and Jihoon Lee come to mind. They both left the franchise eventually, but others like Tiffany Franco and Ronald Smith also had a strong return spring. Of course, with more spinoffs, more faces arrive and stay, which annoys a lot of people.

If you want to know how the definition of “scandal” has changed with the decades, you couldn’t do much better than to see “Taking Venice,” Amei Wallach’s highly enjoyable and revealing documentary about a legendary uproar in the art world. The film chronicles what happened at the 1964 Venice Biennale — the exhibition of contemporary art, held every two years, that culminates in the awarding of an esteemed grand prize. At the time, the Biennale was considered to be a kind of art-world equivalent of the Olympic Games. Not just artists but the nations they represented were jockeying for cultural supremacy. In the ’50s and early ’60s, the grand prize often went to the French, but in 1964 the U.S. decided to mount a campaign of “cultural diplomacy” in the hopes that one of its own artists — Robert Rauschenberg — would win the Biennale.

After the hush money verdict was announced Thursday, Donald Trump was not the only presidential candidate to criticize the court’s decision — Robert F. Kennedy Jr. took a jab, too.

A new streaming service being developed by Fox Corporation, the Walt Disney Company’s ESPN and Warner Bros Discovery’s (Wbd) TNT Sports is likely to poach customers from traditional cable and comparable streaming products when it launches later this year, according to the findings of a new study by Horowitz Research.
The study, circulated among industry analysts and journalists on Wednesday, found 38 percent of Americans who are currently subscribed to traditional cable or a streaming alternative like Fubo and DirecTV Stream are likely to adjust their subscriptions to buy Venu Sports when it launches in August.
Pricing for the service hasn’t been announced, but it is expected to cost around $45 to $50 per month — substantially lower than the cost of a core pay TV package offered by cable, satellite or sports-inclusive streaming cable alternatives.

How does an aspiring model who came to Paris hoping to make it big end up in a refugee camp? Well, that’s the story of Adilah in Stephen Knight’s wonderfully written political thriller, The Veil. When Adilah tries to distribute food bags amongst refugees, one woman identifies her as an Isis militant and calls her a “daesh” (the radical Sunni Muslim Organization). Adilah is dragged into the middle of a raging mob of women who have lost their husbands and children, and Un officials save her before she gets stomped to death. Now Adilah sits in a secluded tent being watched, while the Dgse, CIA, and Mi-6 all want her, suspecting she’s a high-ranking Isis commander, ‘Djinn al Raqqah.’
Spoilers Ahead
Why did Adilah trust Imogen?
Adilah got stranded with no help from anyone, and she could be killed by any one of the thousands of refugees in the camp.

"We have to see loneliness as a threat to our health security." Abramorama has debuted the full trailer for a documentary film titled Join or Die, which is a rather ominous title for a doc. This important film centers on America's civic unraveling through the journey of scientist Robert Putnam (aka Bob), whose research on the decline in American community lights a path out of our democracy's present crisis. It first premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival last year, playing at the Boston, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Tallgrass, Tuscon, and Denver Film Festivals as well. Putnam is a renowned social scientist and the Malkin Research Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University. He describes this as a "film about why you should join a club... and why the fate of America depends on it." It is an examination of how the decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy's present crisis.

First Lady Jill Biden swatted away suggestions that President Joe Biden is too old for the job, saying on ABC’s The View today that her husband, at 81, is “about the same age” as the assumed challenger Donald Trump, who turns 78 in two weeks.
“This election is not about age,” she said, adding, “This is about character.”
“You have to believe [Trump],” she continued, “when he uses words like ‘dictator,’ ‘bloodbath,’ ‘third term,’ ‘violence.’ We’ve seen it, so when he says these words believe him, don’t think this isn’t going to happen.”
