South Korean cinema, especially twisty thrillers, have gained a massive fanbase around the globe in the last two decades for a reason. The genre’s unapologetically hyperviolent approach and thickly layered narratives (with a touch of madness) often venture beyond extremes without breaking the veil of real-life plausibility. It’s a style of filmmaking and storytelling that’s virtually unparalleled, a unique characteristic and hallmark of the country’s entertainment.
After the global success of Netflix’s Squid Game, it’s hardly a surprise that Tving and Paramount+’s latest action-thriller, A Bloody Lucky Day, continues to carry over those impressive qualities to the small screen in an equally arresting manner. The 10-episode series is like a metaphorical butcher knife that keeps getting sharper as its gripping story unfolds between a good-hearted taxi driver and a flagrant serial killer. That might sound like a basic premise, but the creators turn...

It seems all the Ott platforms are now building up their Asian content, with something new popping up on a daily basis. While Netflix gives us quality content via shows that come once a week, Prime has been lucky to sport all the big films of the Korean industry, such as Parasite, The Wailing, and more. Their latest addition is not one that stands out. In fact, it’s rather unassuming for its subject matter. My Love Puppy stars Yoo Yeon-Seok and Cha Tae-Hyun, two mighty stars of the Korean industry, yet even with their magnificent star power, this film is as flat as the roads they travel within it. It seems it may not be as hard as we imagined to make a movie about dogs devoid of any real substance. At the end of the day, My Love Puppy ends up being less emotional and more PSA.

Streaming services Paramount+ and Tving have greenlighted two new jointly-developed Korean TV series. They are the product of an ongoing relationship between parent companies Paramount Global and Korea’s Cj Enm.
They are action thriller “A Bloody Lucky Day” and period drama “Queen Woo.”
Korean TV content has been a growth vector for international and regional streaming platforms in Asia. Competition for new originals is fierce and expensive, but Korean drama and increasingly, unscripted shows, continues to attract critical and commercial kudos.
Paramount+ said that new Korean drama series “Yonder” has been the most-watched international show in the U.S. in its first week of availability (since Aprile 11). Its upcoming Korean series “Bargain” earned the best screenplay award at Canneseries on Wednesday and will upload in summer this year.
“A Bloody Lucky Day” follows an ordinary taxi driver who becomes entangled with a customer that turns out to be a serial killer.

If 2017's “Steel Rain” was an idealistic, rather narrowed down look at the quest for Korean reunification and the forces that may come between that, then its sequel, “Steel Rain 2: Summit” is the broader, more refined version of the same vision. It may be entirely unrelated to its predecessor but it is hard to avoid making comparisons, especially given both share the same ambitious end goal. However, where the latest instalment thrives is in its dedication to acknowledging the rest of the cogs in the cluttered machine that is the strained inter-Korea relations, and the ways that all sides can manipulate each other in the quest for fiscal, and non-fiscal, power and gains.
“Steel Rain 2: Summit” is available from Echelon Studios

Denis Dercourt is by no means an A-lister in the realm of French cinema, but he nevertheless made some career, both at home and abroad in Germany, especially with his 2006 Cannes title “The Page Turner”. With last year’s “The Vanished” (somewhere already released as “Vanishing”), Dercourt tried to bring his career on a new level by adapting the novel “The Killing House” of a renowned British crime fiction author Peter May in a French-Korean co-production set in Seoul. After the premiere at last year’s Busan, some minor festival bookings and limited theatrical and online releases, it is now released globally on various digital platforms.
The Vanished is now available on Digital Platforms
The topic is set in an opening sequence. A bulky man (Choi Moo-seong) goes to an underground surgical facility from which he picks up a heavy load in suitcases. The facility itself turns out to be a mob-operated organ harvesting point,...

"Someone kidnapped a girl and her blood type is B-." Signature Ent. in the UK has revealed their official trailer for a tech thriller titled The Vanished, which is a French film from a French filmmaker set in South Korea featuring a cast of mostly Korean actors as well as Ukrainian actress Olga Kurylenko. How's that for a pitch? Alice Launey, a French forensic expert still haunted by her past, comes to Seoul to present her work. She will meet Jin-Ho, a detective who asks for her help on an odd murder case. Drawn into network trafficking, she needs to face her fears with the detective, while fleeing international criminal gangs as they fight to stay alive and reveal the truth. Kurylenko stars with Yoo Yeon-Seok, Ji-won Ye, Moo-Seong Choi, and Seung-Jun Lee. This actually doesn't look so bad - a European thriller mixed with a Korean detective story. Not...
