Bobby Rubio’s Pixar short film Float follows a Filipino American father who discovers that his son is different — he can float — and aims to conceal the child’s ability; it’s based on the filmmaker’s relationship with his son, who is on the autism spectrum. “It’s about me dealing with that — I was in a very dark place, like the father — and him coming to accept his son for who he is.
“Originally the family was white,” Rubio admits, adding, “marketingwise, I thought the lead character had to be white....

Bobby Rubio, who made his directorial debut with Pixar’s animated short “Float” on Disney Plus earlier this month, has worked at Pixar as a story artist since 2012, contributing to “Inside Out,” “Incredibles 2” and “Brave.” But “Float” broke new ground as the first Pixar work to feature a Filipino American animated character.
The short tells the story of a father who discovers that his young son is different than other kids because he floats. Rather than subject him to judgment from the outside world due to his difference, the father keeps his son out of sight.
“Float” was inspired by Rubio’s own son, who was diagnosed with autism. When Rubio learned about his son’s diagnosis, he didn’t handle the news well.
“My wife said I should tell the story through comic books, as that’s what I did on the side back then,” he explained. Rubio started the creative process,...

Known for his Emmy-winning roles playing curmudgeons, ranging from Lou Grant on The Mary Tyler Moore Show to Carl in the Pixar film Up, actor Ed Asner's true character is that of a philanthropist and loving father who shared his passion for comic books with his children.
Earlier this year, the legendary actor and founders Matt and Navah Asner opened The Ed Asner Family Center, to offer a host of programs, classes and therapy dedicated to promoting self-confidence in differently abled individuals. They plan to open in their new location in November.
On Oct. 17, Heritage Auctions is hosting The Ed Asner Family Center Original Comic Art Charity Auction at Ha.com/Asner. Today’s leading comic book artists, including Kevin Nowlan, Alex Ross, Jim Lee and more, have donated high-profile work for the online auction.

We're likely to get a new poster for Captain America: The Winter Soldier leading up to next month's inevitable Super Bowl trailer, but Poster Posse, an artist collective formed by Blurppy.com, has created a very impressive collection of fan art posters inspired by the upcoming Marvel Studios sequel. Lately, there are also some pretty good submissions on DeviantArt by artists who're also anticipating the First Avenger's cinematic return. Check out the gallery below and even more here! Nightwing is a character I have grown to love over the last 10 years. He's Batman with a soul if you will. That's not troll bait mind you, just how I honestly feel. We could get into a whole other ball of wax regarding his time as Batman, which I personally thought was cut way too short, but that's for another article.
That said, Mr.Grayson has gone through many different looks throughout the years, and most recently has gone with a different color scheme as well with his New 52 design. DC proper however aren't the only ones to give the former boy wonder a new look, so here's a collection of some of my favorite redesigns outside of the house that Superman built. The Nightwing above btw is from artist extraordinaire Artgerm.

I don't watch a lot of sports, and I'll be the first to admit that I've never really understood how this whole March Madness thing actually works. But a comedy group called Satire did a pretty good job explaining March Madness in Star Wars terms that a geek like me can understand. The video was directed by Nick Nielson who says,
It was either this or explain the Oscars through chocobo-farming.
It ended up being pretty entertaining, and I hope you enjoy it! ...

Welcome back for another edition of News Bits. What is it you ask? The film world can get quite overwhelming at times in the news that releases. Unfortunately some of this news is just too small to warrant a full article. Rather than deprive you of the news, we've created this section. This week in news bits we’ve got trailers, posters, announcements, and lots more!
Oh my gosh, it's been quite some time since we had a good News Bits. Things have been hectic around here, and with all of the big news that's been coming out over the last few weeks, it's been harder to keep up with. Either way, we're back this week!
* Disney/Pixar released a new little featurette for Brave, which asks the question "Are you brave enough to wear" a kilt?
* Tarsem Signh's version of Snow White, Mirror Mirror, is going to be available on blu-ray June 26th.

Artist Bobby Rubio is at it again! He's created yet another awesome piece of Geek Art featuring The X-Men having a dance-off battle with The Avengers. It's called Avengers Vs. X-Men, and here's a fun note from the artist.
Yo! It's On, like Comic Con!
It's time to battle and take it to the streets!
Can a group of outcasts take on the defending champions?
AvX, baby!
This piece made me laugh. I love the concept, and like most of the geek art I post I'd love to see this get animated.

Marvel announced these a while back, but it seems more appropriate to show you these on Flag Day: to promote Captain America: The First Avenger, Marvel is running “I Am Captain America” variant covers on selected titles through June and July, with all-new artwork from Joe Quesada, Marko Djurdjevic, Alex Maleev, Skottie Young, and Ed McGuiness, among others.
Personally, I’d love to have a few of these as posters.

There is a little Captain America in all of us. Marvel Comics has released a wonderful collection of variant cover art for several of their upcoming comic books being released in July as a way to promote the upcoming Captain America film. The theme of these variant comic book covers is I Am Captain America. The covers were done by several different comic-book artists, and each cover depicts the real-world American heroes. Each image includes a recognizable image from Captain America. Check out the cover art and hit us up with your thoughts!
