Nathan Lane came out of the closet to his mother and two brothers at age 21, and says he marched in Pride parades as far back as the late 1970s. But it wasn’t until he started playing gay roles and saw his career explode thanks to Mike Nichols’ 1996 film The Birdcage that he experienced rampant speculation about his sexuality.
“I certainly wish I had been braver at the time,” Lane said while accepting a career achievement trophy during the LGBTQ+ Celebration of Cinema & Television at Fairmont Century Plaza on Friday. “Like when Oprah Winfrey on her show asked me why I was so good at all that girly stuff in The Birdcage. If I could go back in time, the answer I wish I had given is: The reason I’m good at all that stuff is because I’m a wonderful actor but if you’re asking me if I’m gay,...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Loot Season 2, Episode 4, “Mr. Congeniality.”] Loot’s latest episode welcomed a very special guest star with the appropriately titled installment, “Mr. Congeniality.” Benjamin Bratt stepped in to play a version of himself as Molly (Maya Rudolph) visited a swanky meditation retreat for her mental well-being. Things took a hilariously heated turn as Molly couldn’t hide her attraction to the movie star. Much to Molly’s delight, Bratt expressed an equal interest in her. But how did this amazing guest star appearance even come together? It turns out that there’s a Poker Face connection as Natasha Lyonne, who stars in the Peacock series is an executive producer on Loot and suggested her costar Bratt for the role. Apple TV+ “I mean, you yourself Poker Faced that… Natasha did suggest Benjamin Bratt,” co-creator Alan Yang says with a laugh. “She was like, ‘he’s incredible!’ And she really liked working...

So then we get to explore how they interact with each other and we get to see a lot more of the characters’ personal lives this season, which I think is also really fun,” Yang shares in the video interview, above. Apple TV+ “That’s my favorite part as well,” Rudolph chimes in. “The family aspect and seeing Molly figure out her new roles in her life, but also the bonds...

Aziz Ansari cast Keanu Reeves as an angel named Gabriel in his new Lionsgate film Good Fortune, but God apparently wasn’t looking out for Reeves when he tripped on a rug in his trailer.
“About 15 days into shooting with me, I said, ‘Go chill in your trailer,'” Ansari recalled during an appearance at CinemaCon on Wednesday. “He tripped on a rug … Poor guy, he was such a trooper, and he fractured his kneecap and continued to do all the scenes.”
Ansari, appearing opposite Lionsgate’s motion picture group chair Adam Fogelson during the studio’s presentation in front of theater owners, suggested that the accident was even more striking considering that through all his physically demanding work in action pics like the John Wick franchise and Speed, “he never had to go to the hospital or anything.”

Loot is officially returning for the latest chapter in do-gooder billionaire Molly Wells’ (Maya Rudolph) story on April 3, and she’s making some big changes in Season 2, according to creators Matt Hubbard and Alan Yang. “So much of Season 1 is sort of having her eyes opened to the world around her and these other people around her culminating in this huge promise she makes of, ‘I’m going to give all my money away.’ And I think through Season 2, the conflict is that is strangely easier said than done,” Hubbard teases. In other words, Molly struggles to find the right way to dole out her charity to those in need. “I think it’s very easy to give money to people who don’t deserve it or are bad actors, and so we spend some time exploring that,” Hubbard continues. As viewers will recall, Season 1 saw Molly promise to give...

Loot on Apple TV+, unlike what the name suggests, is not a heist show. This one is rather an endearing take on a rich woman who is never considered as an emotional person and constantly sidelined for having a lot of money. Created by Alan Yang and Matt Hubbard, the show stars Maya Rudolph as a 45-year-old divorcee struggling with her life and yearning to do something different.
Loot season 1 focused on Molly Novak, the wife of the tech billionaire John Novak. She was seemingly happily married to him until she learned of his infidelity. Molly got a divorce and a hefty alimony, a palatial home in Los Angeles with many helpers at her disposal. Molly, at the age of forty-five, had everything but a life of her own. She had her assistant Nicholas, who supported her through marriage and the divorce, but craved for genuine friends and partners, something...

Palmer, in the wake of that experience, had nothing but praise for Ansari when Deadline spoke to her at the Nope premiere in summer 2022.
“I had a wonderful time filming,” Palmer told us at Nope. “Aziz Ansari is one of the coolest people that I ever met. That was the coolest experience, but I don’t know anything more than that.”

Exclusive: Animal Pictures principals Maya Rudolph and Natasha Lyonne are going their separate ways on the producing front, in an amicable situation, Deadline can exclusively reveal.
Sources ascribed the split to a desire on the part of both producers to entertain differing creative paths and pursuits. Rudolph and Lyonne have made the mutual decision that Lyonne will continue to operate under the name Animal Pictures, as Rudolph branches off to produce independently.
Rudolph and Lyonne affirmed the news in the following statement shared with Deadline: “Moving forward, Natasha will operate under the name Animal Pictures while Maya will produce independently. We will continue to support each other and remain committed to the various projects we’ve developed together and have in the pipeline. We are excited for each other and what the future holds.”

Covid-19 has altered our lives this way or other, and some were given new opportunities to go places they haven't dared venture to before. When his acting career was put to a halt due to strict anti-pandemic measures and lockdown in 2020, Le Hong-Chi remembered his initial dream of becoming a director, and a desire to make something of his own resulted in the idea for “Love Is A Gun”, a neo-noir about a young man who tries to build a normal life after years spent in prison.
“Love Is A Gun” is screening in Venice International Film Festival
In his ambitious directorial debut that screens in Critics' Week section of Venice Film Festival, Lee slips in the role of his main character, a loner nicknamed “Sweet Potato” who fights for his right to an ordinary life on way too many fronts. “Good Fortune” has encountered some bad luck. Writer-director Aziz Ansari’s original comic feature, starring himself, Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen, has shut down production amid the ongoing Writers Guild Association strike. Lionsgate made the call Thursday, and all parties are hoping that production will resume at a later date.
According to sources familiar with the film, who also confirmed the shutdown, the production had been operating according to strike rules, with Ansari directing but not writing any additional material or scenes. Picketers previously interrupted production on May 16 and May 17 while it attempted to shoot in Koreatown. While several films have been delayed due to the strike, most notably Marvel’s “Blade,” Lionsgate’s “Good Fortune” is the first studio theatrical that was halted midfilming.

Aziz Ansari’s “Good Fortune” has been hit with some bad luck.
The Lionsgate film, which is set to star Seth Rogen and Keanu Reeves, has halted production due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike.
A representative of the film shared with IndieWire that principal photography on “Good Fortune” intends to resume at a later date. The “Good Fortune” script was completed prior to the WGA strike, which has led to the shelving of “Stranger Things,” “The Penguin,” “The Last of Us,” and more high-profile productions.
“Good Fortune” is being billed as Ansari’s feature directorial debut after his “Being Mortal” production fell in limbo as of April 2022 amid actor Bill Murray’s sexual misconduct allegations on the set of the Searchlight Pictures film. Murray has claimed the investigation stemmed from a miscommunication. Seth Rogen is also attached to star in “Being Mortal,” in addition to “Good Fortune.

Exclusive: Another one bites the dust: WGA pickets forced a shut-down of the Lionsgate Keanu Reeves and Seth Rogen production Good Fortune last night. Details are below.
The movie, which reps Azia Ansari’s feature directorial debut, was shooting on location in LA’s Koreatown. Picketers arrived to a restaurant location yesterday where the pic was shooting at 9Am. IATSE and teamsters arrived to pre-grip the location at around 11 30Am, however, refused to cross the picket line.
Ansari’s call time, we hear, was at 5pm which is the time producers were hoping picketers would leave.
But they did not. Picketers did not observe Ansari arriving to set.
At around roughly 6Pm, the teamster and IATSE trucks drove offsite to a nearby base camp. Picketers held the line until 12:30am when production was called. Sources tell us that there wasn’t any shooting accomplished.

Add Apple’s Loot to the list of shows that have been impacted by the writers strike.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the Apple comedy produced by Universal Television has shut down after picketers disrupted filming of the comedy starring and exec produced by Maya Rudolph. Production is currently on hold and it’s unclear when — or even if — it will resume.
Reps for producers Universal Television declined comment, and Apple did not immediately respond to THR’s request for comment.
A source close to the production said picketing members of the Writers Guild of America arrived at the Bel-Air mega-mansion that is used for filming the series Friday, and Rudolph is said to have retreated to her trailer, unwilling to return to work.

Sharon Horgan could be set to follow in the footsteps of another acclaimed multi-hyphenate, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, by earning Emmy bids for both writing and starring in a beloved show. While Waller-Bridge achieved that feat for her comedy “Fleabag,” Horgan could do it for her Apple TV+ drama “Bad Sisters.” Horgan co-created, starred in, and wrote several episodes of this hit show, which follows the five Garvey sisters who plot to murder John Paul (Claes Bang), the abusive husband of Anne-Marie Duff‘s Grace Garvey.
The show flashes between two timelines — one in which the sisters try to kill John Paul and one in which a pair of insurance investigators (Brian Gleeson‘s Thomas and Daryl McCormack‘s Matthew) try to prove the sisters’ involvement in John Paul’s death to save their own business.
Horgan teamed up with “New Girl” scribes Brett Baer and Dave Finkel to adapt the hit Belgian show “Clan.

Aziz Ansari is heading back to the director's chair to make his first feature film ... again! In case you forgot, Ansari was set to make his directorial debut with the film "Being Mortal," which was shut down following sexual harassment allegations lodged against the film's star, Bill Murray. It seemed as if the film-directing career of Ansari, who was also accused of sexual misconduct in 2018, was over before it even began. Then again, this is Hollywood, baby! Of course, Aziz Ansari, a seven-time Emmy nominee and two-time winner, is still getting the opportunity to make a high-profile comedy film with a star-studded cast!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ansari is making his actual feature directorial debut with the film "Good Fortune." Not to be confused with Fortune Feimster's hilarious stand-up special of the same name, not much is known about "Good Fortune" outside of the fact Ansari is starring alongside Seth Rogen and Keanu Reeves.

“Loot” co-creators Matt Hubbard and Alan Yang had only one person in mind to star when they created their Apple TV+ comedy about a newly minted female billionaire navigating her tabloid-catnip divorce and venturing to rebrand as a philanthropist: Maya Rudolph. Spoiler alert: The following article discusses the “Loot” Season 1 finale, “The Silver Moon Summit.”
When creators Matt Hubbard and Alan Yang came up with their Apple TV+ billionaire spoof series “Loot,” they weren’t looking to be apologists for the ultra-wealthy. In trying to craft a “juicy” role for Maya Rudolph, they were instead inspired to explore “how much of an outsize effect people with that level of money have on all of our lives.”
The quasi-workplace comedy — which follows newly divorced Molly Novak (Rudolph), who is forced to start anew with 87 billion after unearthing her tech mogul husband’s infidelity — has been dancing around the ethical concerns of billionairedom from its genesis. Throughout the series, she tries to contribute to her charity foundation in a meaningful way in her attempts to course-correct for her inordinate capital. However, after a botched water machine demonstration for the fellow uber-wealthy in the finale,...
