"Star Trek: The Animated Series," originally just called "Star Trek," debuted on September 8, 1973. It will soon be commemorating its 50th anniversary. To celebrate, as announced at this year's San Diego Comic Con, Paramount will be newly animating several "Star Trek" characters and tapping extant "Star Trek" actors to produce several promotional bumpers in the old "Tas" style. Jonathan Frakes will play Commander William Riker in one such bumper, Armin Shimerman will return to play Quark in another, while Doug Jones will appear as Saru from "Star Trek: Discovery."
The announcement was given by "Star Trek" creative consultant Casper Kelly, who previously worked on "Star Trek: Short Treks."
"Star Trek: The Animated Series" famously reunited most of the original series cast (Walter Koenig does not appear) and merrily continued the five-year mission of the U.S.S. Enterprise. James Doohan reprised his role as Scotty, but also took on a lot of the show's supporting characters,...

Sunday’s SAG Awards ceremony will be a streaming event for the first time on the Netflix YouTube channel. One of the highlights each year is the special In Memoriam segment. It’s been a particularly rough year with over 100 deaths of prominent actors and actresses who were likely members of SAG/AFTRA. Show producers typically are able to include approximately 40-50 people in a tribute.
Among that group will certainly be Oscar winners Louise Fletcher, William Hurt and Irene Cara, plus nominees Angela Lansbury (a SAG life achievement recipient) and Melinda Dillon. Emmy champs Mary Alice, Kirstie Alley, Leslie Jordan, Ray Liotta, Stuart Margolin, Robert Morse and Barbara Walters.

This show has everything going for it, in fact, it has Too much going for it: tragic drama, silly comedy, bland heart-tugs and saucy romance. Everybody’s working across purposes, with ‘stunt’ guest star Bobby Darin preening for awards attention. Angie Dickinson, Tony Curtis and Eddie Albert are terrific but are acting in different movies; and Gregory Peck seems out of his depth altogether. Does it keep our attention? You bet. Does it work? I’m not so sure.

Ken Berry, the amiable and musically-talented TV actor of the 1960s and ’70s who starred in “F Troop,” “Mama’s Family” and “Mayberry R.F.D.,” died Saturday.
His former wife, actress Jackie Joseph-Lawrence posted the news on Facebook. “F Troop” co-star Larry Storch wrote on Facebook, “We hope you know how much you were loved. Goodnight Captain.”
Berry played Captain Parmenter on Western sitcom “F Troop” for two years in the mid-1960s.
On “Mama’s Family,” he played Vinton Harper on the “Carol Burnett Show” spinoff, which starred Vicki Lawrence, Rue McClanahan and Betty White. The sitcom ran two seasons on NBC in 1983 and 1984, and two years later was revived in syndication, where it was a hit and ran until 1990.
Berry appeared as widowed farmer Sam Jones on “The Andy Griffith Show” and transitioned into the lead as the show spun off as “Mayberry R.F.D.”

By any standard, The Andy Griffith Show was not an easy act to follow. After all, it became one of the most popular shows throughout its run in the 1960s, and grew even bigger over the decades thanks to reruns and the nostalgia factor. But what’s truly amazing is that series star Andy Griffith decided to leave the show after eight seasons, and instead of simple cancellation, it evolved into the series Mayberry R.F.D., which was essentially the same show, but without Sheriff Andy Taylor or his son, Opie. Instead, the focus shifted to widower farmer (eventually head of the town council) Sam Jones, raising his son, Mike, and they were surrounded by all the regular supporting characters of Mayberry — including Aunt Bee. Amazingly it worked, much of it because of actor Ken Berry, who stepped in as Sam. "Andy and Don Knotts had had an oral agreement that...

Director Greydon Clark is not a name thrown around a lot. Horror fans will know him (probably) for 1977’s Satan’s Cheerleaders. The rest of filmdom need not apply. However, his best film, Without Warning (1980), would end up resonating in such a way as to inspire Predator (1987), Schwarzenegger’s Alien in the Jungle box office smash. And when I say inspire, I mean they stole the concept. But what Without Warning lacks in testosterone and Hollywood bankrolls, it makes up in B movie charm and a winsome personality. You can’t help but fall in love with the damn thing.
Released by Filmways Pictures in New York, in September 1980, Without Warning (Aka It Came…Without Warning) had a scattered release – dribs and drabs in smaller markets, and don’t forget Finland (who could?). Made for a meager $150,000 Us the film was given a real dine and dash release, I’m...

Melody Patterson, who played “Wrangler Jane” Angelica Thrift on the Old West comedy F Troop, died on Friday at age 66.
Patterson’s passing was reported by the official Facebook page for F Troop costar Larry Storch.
Running for two seasons on ABC (from 1965-67), F Troop followed the post-American Civil War antics at the remote Army outpost Fort Courage. Patterson’s Wrangler Jane was the tomboyish, shopkeeper and sharpshooter girlfriend of Captain Wilton Parmenter (played by Ken Berry).
The actress’ TV credits also included appearances on The Monkees, Green Acres, Adam-12 and the original Hawaii Five-0.

Two years ago, legendary manager Shep Gordon was lying in the hospital, recovering from gastrointestinal surgery, when Mike Myers approached him with an idea he'd been obsessing over: a documentary about Gordon's life. Gordon – a Zelig-like figure who'd befriended everyone from Michael Douglas to the Dalai Lama and was best known as Alice Cooper's manager – reluctantly agreed. "I was heavily medicated and must have been feeling sorry for myself," says Gordon.

Code Red has been going “code blue” of late, releasing the likes of Nail Gun Massacre and Just Before Dawn on Blu-ray. We now know of seven more forthcoming Blu horror titles from the 70s, 80s, and 90s they have in the works to further empty your wallets in the coming year.
We haven’t come across any official word from Code Red regarding these newest offerings so it may be that Blu-ray.com let the proverbial cat out of the bag by listing these titles for future release the other day. In any event, here are the details:

A lot of people ask me, "Creepy, how did you first come to love horror movies so much?" Well, growing up in the Seventies, there was plenty to go around. There were TV classics like Gargoyles, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, and any number of TV Movies of the Week, and there was also...
There was also a ton of weird and quirky bits of monster-themed kids programming. Usually "The Munsters" and "The Land of the Lost" get all the love, and rightly so. They're absolute classics. That being said, we're gonna talk about some other things here. Things you may not have known even existed. For instance, were you aware that way before Venkmen, Spengler, Stantz and Zeddmore there was a whole other set of Ghostbusters? How about a different Monster Squad? Got your attention? Good. Sit back, relax, and get ready to soak up some lunacy as we revisit.

Imagine the Joker has you tied up. You’re in a dimly lit warehouse right off the river. The air is thick, stale, and musky. The tide raps against the nearby docks punishingly. The rope that binds your hands behind your back is chokingly tight. Every twitch in your wrist scrapes twine against raw flesh. Footsteps on concrete floors echo louder and louder as they draw near.
That laugh. It starts out low and menacing. It crescendos a bit. A few “hee-hees” and “ho-hos” tossed in jovially. It crescendos. Cackling, lung emptying chortles screech on your ears. You wince and tense up. Your wrists chafe as skin breaks. You can feel blood reaching the surface of the rope.
“So fanboy, it wasn’t hard to lure you here. The promise of a preview copy of Catwoman 2 was all it took. Well. that and the promise of more side boob. And now?...

In 1970, one movie invented the modern disaster film. After grossing more than $100 million at the domestic box office (adjusted for inflation, it made more than any of the "Lord of the Rings"), it spawned three sequels that stretched through the entire decade. But this landmark series is now almost totally forgotten, long eclipsed by the film that so brilliantly spoofed the genre tropes it helped define. In honor of its 40th anniversary, we're looking back at the "Airport" franchise this week, one film at a time. Today, the first sequel, which is called "Airport 1975" even though it was released in 1974.

Nature of Air Emergency: A pilot suffers a heart attack and loses control of his private plane, sending it into the path of Columbia Airlines Flight 409. The jet survives the collision, but the captain, co-pilot, and navigator are all killed or maimed.

Dean Martin stars in a pair of romantic farces, both set in New York City and using some locations there, on the Sony Home Entertainment Dean Martin Double Feature release "Who Was That Lady?"/"How to Save a Marriage (And Ruin Your Life)" (retail $19.94).
As a matter of coincidence, both films feature "famous couple" co-stars, too. On both films, the monophonic sound is smooth and there are optional English subtitles. Both presentations are letterboxed with an accommodation for enhanced 16:9 playback. Sony has inadvertently left out a menu option that lets you move from one movie to the other without rejecting and restarting the disc, but otherwise, the pairing is fairly enjoyable.
In "Who Was That Lady?," Tony Curtis is a Columbia professor who gets caught fooling around by his wife, played by Janet Leigh. Martin's character is his best friend and they cook up a story, with props, claiming that Curtis' character was "working undercover for the FBI."
She buys into it, only to have some real spies and FBI agents get mixed up with their activities. It takes the 114-minute feature a little while to get all of its pieces in place, but there are some reasonably funny moments and the cast is very appealing. Simon Oakland and Larry Storch, for example, turn up as Russian spies. The letterboxing has an aspect ratio of about 1.85:1. The black-and-white image is reasonably solid, with well-defined contrasts.
Anne Jackson plays the mistress of Eli Wallach's character in "How to Save a Marriage (And Ruin Your Life)," from 1967, and Martin's character is the best friend again, mistaking Stella Stevens' character for Jackson and then mucking up the other relationship because Stevens' character flirts with him.
Again, the confusions that develop in the 102-minute feature are very amusing and very sweet, and the performers are adept and enjoyable. The letterboxing has an aspect ratio of about 2.35:1. The color transfer looks super, with fresh hues and accurate fleshtones.
Both films, incidentally, require that the viewer sympathize with, or at least not entirely reject, men who are acting stupidly, and both films succeed in no small part because Martin is able to smooth over the boorishness of his character's actions in the same manner that his velvety vocals could even out an erratic melody.
