A wet, windy night couldn’t dampen the mood at the opening reception of the Berlinale Series Market and Conference, the Berlin Film Festival’s popular three-day TV strand that kicked off Monday Feb. 24 with a full house at the Gropius Mirror Pavilion.
Among those in attendance were European Film Market director Matthijs Wouter Knol, Berlin Film Festival co-director Mariette Rissenbeek, and Film- und Medienstiftung Nrw CEO Petra Müller.
Now in its sixth year, the Berlinale Series Market has become a fixture on the global TV industry circuit, said the Efm topper. “It feels like an event that has established [itself],” said Knol, “when we look at the amount of people attending, the buyers attending, companies attending, and also people recognizing and acknowledging that the Series Market within the Efm has become a very substantial part of their business [during the market].”

The German industry event will showcase 28 projects that are currently in production or post-production. After last year’s successful first edition, European Work in Progress Cologne (Ewip), an independent industry event organised by Ag Verleih - Association of German Independent Film Distributors and mainly supported by the Film- und Medienstiftung Nrw, is ready to enter its second round. The second edition of the event, which creates opportunities for carefully selected arthouse projects to meet appropriate distributors, co-producers, world sales agents and festival representatives, kicks off today and will unspool from 14-16 October in the German city of Cologne, during the Film Festival Cologne. “The great response to European Work in Progress Cologne shows that our joint initiative came at the right time. The extension to documentary films, which are particularly strong in North-Rhine-Westphalia, was the next logical step,” says Petra Müller, CEO of the Film- und Medienstiftung Nrw. “All participating.

With more international co-productions in cinemas than ever before and a new crop of high-profile titles this year, Germany’s renown as fertile ground for foreign filmmakers continues to soar.
The number of German-backed cross-border titles in local theaters rose 30% last year to 98 — the most ever — and the trend looks set to continue. This year a slew of German co-productions are vying for Cannes’ Palme d’Or, among them Terrence Malick’s historical drama “A Hidden Life”; Jessica Hausner’s sci-fi thriller “Little Joe”; Marco Bellocchio’s mafia pic “The Traitor”; Corneliu Porumboiu’s “The Whistlers”; and Elia Suleiman’s “It Must Be Heaven.”
Key to the country’s filmmaking allure is a generous system of federal and regional funding sources and a dynamic film industry geared toward international co-production.
Leading companies include Pallas Films, whose credits include “It Must Be Heaven” and Sergey Dvortsevoy’s “Ayka”; Pandora Film, co-producer...

Berlin — Attendees of Berlinale’s Drama Series Days followed a busy and wide-ranging program on Monday with a packed opening reception, supported by Film- und Medienstiftung Nrw, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, and the Norwegian Film Institute, and with Variety as a media partner.
After a lively day of panel discussions and sessions focused on the future of television, guests partied at the chic Super Concept Space just steps from the red carpet of Zoo Palast. Among those in attendance were Film- und Medienstiftung Nrw CEO Petra Müller, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg managing director Kirsten Niehuus, Efm director Matthijs Wouter Knol, and Berlinale Series program manager Solmaz Azizi.
The growing excitement around the Berlin Film Festival’s popular TV strand, which moved to Zoo Palast last year to concentrate both screenings and industry activities in a single hub, is part of a natural evolution in the industry, according to Knol.

Before taking the reins at the Berlin Film Festival in 2001, Dieter Kosslick had already racked up a number of impressive accomplishments in the domestic and international film sectors, and he immediately put that know-how to work in expanding and re-shaping Germany’s premier film event.
Kosslick is being honored with Variety’s Achievement in International Film Award at the Berlin Film Festival.
In 1983, Kosslick became managing director of the Hamburger Filmbüro, which oversaw cultural film funding in Hamburg, and later headed the newly launched Film Fonds Hamburg, which provided more commercial-oriented economic film support.
While in Hamburg, in 1986 Kosslick launched a number of groundbreaking, border-crossing initiatives, such as the European Low Budget Film Forum, which attracted then-fledgling filmmakers including Derek Jarman, Stephen Frears and Lars von Trier and later developed into Filmfest Hamburg. That led to the establishment of the EU Media Program and the European Film Distribution Office (Efdo...
