- Belgian-born character actor, prolific on the French stage and for twenty-two years a leading member of the Comédie-Française. Studied under Raphael Duflos at the National Conservatory of Dramatic Art. Discovered for films by the director Jacques Feyder in 1919.
- He was also a stage director. His great-grandfather was Napoleon's coachman and went in exile in Belgium after 1815.
