Seventeen years after the original, and four years since the last film in the franchise, Evil Bong 777, Evil Bong 888: Infinity High brings the saga of EeBee to a close. At least that’s what director and Full Moon head honcho, Charles Band is saying now, but as we all knew, he’s never met a sequel he didn’t like.
Rabbit has finally decided to turn over a new leaf and become a legit businessman, a restaurateur to be precise. While his first day in business doesn’t bring him much business it does bring him a Maître d’, or Maître Double d’ as he puts it, Thomasina “Tom” Atkins.

Filmmaker Tony Kaye has always taken an incendiary approach to exposing the nation’s most disturbing problems, from the traumatizing act of anti-Semitism that opened “American History X” to his eye-opening abortion rights documentary “Lake of Fire.” While Kaye has maintained a lower profile in recent years, he continued to churn out a range of multimedia work, and the looming midterm elections have given him the opportunity to deliver bite-sized call to action.
Kaye’s new minute-long advertisement has provided exclusively to IndieWire and is currently being shared by a handful of volunteers canvassing in the state. It features Deven McNair, a professional stuntwoman, being set on fire while delivering an angry call to action. “This year, it’s more than an election. It’s an emergency,” she says. “Things are getting out of control. Republicans are giving billionaires a trillion-dollar tax cut.”

Richard Linklater and the Fire Ted Cruz Pac have now teamed up on four commercials designed to convince Texans heading to the polls on November 6th that the incumbent senator is not the man to represent their state. Each of the ads have featured nothing more than an extremely Texan man, played by Sonny Carl Davis, sitting in an extremely Texan coffee shop, expressing bewilderment over how his home state could embrace such a craven, unlikable politician. Released Tuesday afternoon, the latest offering keys in on how even Republicans find Cruz objectionable.

Richard Linklater isn’t letting Ted Cruz off the hook. On the heels of an October 8 advertisement in which Linklater questioned whether or not Cruz was “tough as Texas,” as his political slogan claims, the director has released a second anti-Cruz political ad on behalf of the Fire Ted Cruz Pac that asks whether or not Cruz truly loves Texas or not. Texas senator Cruz is seeking re-election this November against Democrat Beto O’Rourke.
Cruz dissed O’Rourke earlier this year by referring to the democrat as a “Triple Meat Whataburger liberal who is out of touch with Texas values.” O’Rourke responded by taking a video of himself ordering food at a Texas Whataburger following a September debate against Cruz. Linklater’s new ad, once again starring his “Bernie” actor Sonny Carl Davis, plays directly into the feud.
“Everybody I know in Texas likes Whataburger,” Sonny says in the ad.

One of the best political ads of 2018 was also one of the simplest. Directed by filmmaker Richard Linklater and commissioned by the Fire Ted Cruz Pac, the ad features a distinctly Texan man questioning the senator’s mettle. “Somebody left something on my door the other day. It said ‘Ted Cruz: Tough as Texas,'” the man says, coffee cup in hand. “If somebody called my wife a dog and said my daddy was in on the Kennedy assassination, I wouldn’t be kissing their ass. A new contribution to the Texas midterm battle between Ted Cruz and aspirant challenger Beto O’Rourke, this campaign ad is directed by Richard Linklater. It stars Sonny Carl Davis, something of a legend in Texas film, going back to his roles in Eagle Pennell’s The Whole Shootin’ Match (1978) and Last Night at the Alamo (1983). The ad does not explicitly endorse O’Rourke; it’s 30 seconds of Davis fiercely trash-talking Cruz in a diner, a chopped-down monologue that plays like an outtake from Linklater’s Bernie. There’s a reason for that: it’s Davis who delivers that film’s monologue breaking down the “five different states” of Texas, and […]...

Filmmaker Richard Linklater has thrown his hat into the political ring by directing a new anti-Ted Cruz advertisement. The video launched October 8 and is sponsored by the Fire Ted Cruz Pac. Texas senator Cruz is seeking re-election this November over Democrat Beto O’Rourke.
The advertisement, “Is Ted Cruz ‘Tough as Texas?,'” reunites Linklater with Sonny Carl Davis, who appeared in a small role in the director’s 2011 movie “Bernie.” Davis sits at a diner table and mocks Cruz and his “Tough as Texas” campaign slogan. “Somebody left something on my door the other day that said, ‘Ted Cruz: tough as Texas.’ If somebody called my wife a dog, and said my daddy was in on the Kennedy assassination, I wouldn’t be kissin’ their ass.”

Sundance just ended, and we are already preparing for the next big film festival, South By Southwest. Not too long ago, the festival announced a few of the films premiering this year, but now they’ve announced the main slate. The midnight selections and some inevitable late-breaking additions are still to be announced, but this should be more than enough to get you excited. Along with many World Premieres, and Sundance favorites like Richard Linklater’s Boyhood and Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2, the line up also includes an anniversary screening of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and an extended Q&A screening of The Grand Budapest Hotel with Wes Anderson. SXSW 2014 runs March 7 through 15 in Austin, Texas. Check out the line up after the jump.

After announcing earlier this month that Jon Favreau’s Chef and the Veronica Mars movie will be making their world debuts at SXSW this year, the festival has revealed its full line-up, including further very promising world premieres, alongside appearances from some of the year’s most high-profile films.
The Midnight programme will be announced early next month, along with the Shorts line-up, and the complete Conference slate a little later as well.
Led by Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, Nicholas Stoller’s anticipated R-rated comedy, Neighbors, will be making its world debut at the festival, notably marked out as a ‘work-in-progress’ ahead of its theatrical release in May.
David Gordon Green’s acclaimed Joe will make its Us premiere, having bowed at Venice and then Toronto last year. Early reviews have Nicolas Cage giving one of the finest performances of his career, with Tye Sheridan (Mud) excellent alongside him.

Not sure if there is a Short Term 12 equivalent in this year’s Narrative Feature Comp, but on paper SXSW programmers are serving up a mean (and the usual lean group of 8 out of a whopping 1,324 film entries) for the upcoming competitiuon of eight which includes notable entries (that we’ve been tracking for a good time now) such as Zachary Wigon’s The Heart Machine, John Magary’s The Mend, Leah Meyerhoff’s I Believe in Unicorns and Lawrence Michael Levine’s Wild Canaries. Undoubtedly one of the most anticipated docs of the year, on the non-fiction side we find Margaret Brown’s The Great Invisible. Below you’ll find a breakdown of the other sections (notable world preems in We’ll Never Have Paris and Faults (see Mary Elizabeth Winstead above), some Sundance items with Texan connections and other nuggets.

Butcher Boys escaped me early on, and I for sure did not know that it was from the mind of Kim Henkel, the writer of the original “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”. I cannot begin to explain what high regard I have for that movie. Gritty 1970’s exploitation is my bag anyway, and that movie was a master stroke in the genre. It has only happened to a similar, but far lesser degree with “The Blair Witch Project” over twenty years later. Is it real? Did it actually happen? Am I going to be able to sit through this, or it is just going to be too much to take? TCM was like finding a filet mignon in a Spam can. I thought the meat metaphor would be appropriate. Brilliantly written, directed, and expertly shot by Daniel Pearl, with actors and locations whose deficiencies somehow became advantages.

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by Phase 4 Films Directors: Duane Graves and Justin Meeks. Writer: Kim Henkel. Cast: Ali Faulkner, Edwin Neal, Marilyn Burns, Derek Lee Nixon, Karrie Cox and Sonny Carl Davis. Butcher Boys is a cannibal film set in Texas, from writer Kim Henkel. Horror fans will recognize Henkel's name from the original The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). Henkel is still churning out cannibal films, but the Butcher Boys is tainted meat. Shot on a sparse budget, the Butcher Boys is full of cat and mouse chase sequences and not much more. Instead, the film seems to spin its wheels in the second and third acts. The story begins with four twentysomethings. You will hardly figure out their names before these two couples are being chased by a group of thugs, straight out of S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders. Several minutes are spent with chase sequences,...

While other media outlets want to let you know which movie the Austin Film Critics Association picked for Best Film, and how many awards other notable movies won, here at Slackerwood we like to lead with Austin news. So I'm happy to tell you that the Afca announced its 2012 awards this morning and Bernie, the Richard Linklater dark comedy starring Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey and Shirley MacLaine (not to mention Sonny Carl Davis), won Best Austin Film. In addition, the critics group recognized Austin native Matthew McConaughey with a Special Honorary Award for his excellent acting in four movies this year -- not just Bernie but also Magic Mike, Killer Joe and The Paperboy.

With so many independent film projects in Austin, it can sometimes be challenging to stay up to date on local production news. Promotions usually don't occur until after a film has been completed, but now and then filmmakers offer the unique opportunity of a set visit. These behind-the-scenes experiences reveal that the "magic" of moviemaking is really about the blood, sweat and tears a filmmaking team will sacrifice for their project. Specifically, the dedication and passion behind bringing a story to the screen, the physical conditions endured, and the frustration of funding dissolving at critical moments.
An upcoming film project that had hit my radar while researching for my monthly "Ready, Set, Fund" column is the feature Thank You A Lot. I was intrigued that Texas singer/songwriter James "Slim" Hand was prominently featured in this film, as well as local Austin musicians.

The Boneboys is a looming cannibalistic feature that continues to confuse one film fan. The first trailer for the feature, hosted here, shows a group of friends on the run from something or someone that is left unexplained. Unfortunately, these friends run into a family of cannibals who seem to be on the hungry side. How does a family of cannibals manage to live in a major urban centre? With that question aside, horror fans might remember writer Kim Henkel from his work on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). This is one of Duane Graves' first feature films as director and Justin Meeks (The Wild Man of Navidad) has a background in both an acting and directing. Have a look at the first trailer for their latest horror venture below and try to put the puzzle pieces together. Directors: Duane Graves and Justin Meeks. Writer/producer: Kim Henkel. I was really looking forward to watching some kind (well, any kind) of Massacre. To my dismay Saturday Morning Massacre had no massacre in it.
It is another convoluted, poorly written, terribly acted, bad looking, non-scary “scary” movie wherein absolutely Nothing happens until the movie is almost over. You would probably enjoy this movie if you have lived under a rock because you are a snail and know nothing about the world.
Note to the film makers: just because you use rockabilly music and “cool” haircuts on your actors while dressing them like the “cool” poser kids doesn’t mean you are making a horror movie. Also, just because you decide these characters are going to kind of, but not really, explore sex doesn’t make it edgy or modern; it makes it stale masturbation because not once,...

I wasn't at the Los Angeles Film Festival this weekend, sadly for me. However, former Austinite Spencer Parsons screened his locally shot horror-comedy Saturday Morning Massacre here in Austin last week, and I was lucky enough to be there. It's just the kind of horror movie I like -- lots of humor but not enough to dilute genuine scariness, and no prolonged graphic violence. Seeing it accomplished with familiar local talent was a happy bonus.
Saturday Morning Massacre is set in 1994, which seems random until you realize that's right before cell phones became commonplace, thus keeping them out of the picture. Saturday Morning Massacre is set in 1994, which seems random until you realize that's right before cell phones became commonplace, thus keeping them out of the picture. It's the kind of week that makes me want to play hookey every day and hang out in movie theaters. The Paramount is showing two films from 1937 this weekend: The Awful Truth (one of my very favorites) and Grand Illusion. The weekdays are devoted to a combination of Alfred Hitchcock and Jimmy Stewart -- check the Paramount and Stateside calendar for details.
I don't know what you all are doing on Monday night, but I'm going to see the Film Foundation's restored print of Night of the Hunter at Alamo Drafthouse at the Ritz. And if I'm feeling energetic I might stick around for the Music Monday selection afterward: Jim Jarmusch's Mystery Train. How's that for a double feature?
Alamo Drafthouse really does have a great lineup of special screenings this week. The weekend Late Show selection at Ritz is Galaxy Quest, if you can dare Sixth Street on Friday or Saturday night.

Usually, Lone Star Cinema focuses on a movie that you can watch on DVD, VOD and/or online. The idea is in fact to tell you about its availability as well as its local or Texas connections, so you can take another look at the film and perhaps find more enjoyment by noticing that hey, that's the old Governor's Mansion and that's the Astrodome and that's a young Sonny Carl Davis.
But this time I want to write about a movie you can't see, not yet, and have only been able to catch at a few festivals. I caught Satellite of Love at Dallas International Film Festival in March, and I didn't have the time to write fully about it then, and figured a little summary in a dispatch would be sufficient. But it screened again at the Hill Country Film Festival, and by that point I realized the movie...

Enter for a chance to win some tickets to the Bernie comedy starring Jack Black, Matthew McConaughey and Shirley McLaine! Nab some tix to the Richard Linklater comedy distributed by Millennium Entertainment, with a cast also including Brady Coleman, David Blackwell, Rick Dial, Richard Jones, Dale Dudley, Tommy G. Kendrick and Sonny Carl Davis. In the tiny, rural town of Carthage, TX, assistant funeral director Bernie Tiede was one of the town’s most beloved residents. He taught Sunday school, sang in the church choir and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Everyone loved and appreciated Bernie, so it came as no surprise when he befriended Marjorie Nugent, an affluent widow who was as well known for her sour attitude as her fortune. Bernie frequently traveled with Marjorie and even managed her banking affairs. Marjorie quickly became fully dependant on Bernie and his generosity and Bernie struggled to meet her increasing demands.

The 2012 Los Angeles Film Festival will run June 14-24, 2012, and included in the schedule are more than a few movies with ties to Austin or Texas. As Matthew Odam points out in his Tuesday post on Austin Movie Blog, the feature films Saturday Morning Massacre and Magic Mike are both in the lineup. Magic Mike is a Steven Soderbergh film starring Austin actor Matthew McConaughey.
Saturday Morning Massacre was directed by former Austinite Spencer Parsons and was shot locally. Cast members include Jonny Mars and Paul Gordon from The Happy Poet, Heather Kafka and Chris Doubek from Lovers of Hate and veteran character actor Sonny Carl Davis (The Whole Shootin' Match, Bernie). It's a horror movie that references a popular 70s cartoon about crime-fighting teens in a van with a dog.
Here are some more films with Austin/Texas connections scheduled to show during this year's fest:

We've a week to go before SXSW starts and there's plenty to do in Austin right now. To start, there are two (!) Rolling Roadshows on Saturday, the first of which puts the rolling in roadshow, because to enjoy Pee Wee's Big Adventure you must cycle from Alamo Drafthouse on Slaughter Lane to the Veloway. The other, well, the Funky Chicken Coop Tour is bringing the doc Mad City Chickens to Callahan’s General Store in Bastrop. On Tuesday, the Klru co-sponsored Community Cinema Series at the Apl Windsor Park Branch is showing Revenge Of The Electric Car. This free series features light refreshments and post-film discussions with relevant organizations.
All this week, Violet Crown has added special screenings of Oscar-winning films to its schedule, including Beginners and Tree of Life; check their website for times. And as Alamo Drafthouse on Slaughter Lane prepares to officially open, it's training up all its staff,...

"…and I would have gotten away with it, too, if it wasn’t for you meddling kids!. Just how many episodes of "Scooby Doo" ended with that line? And did anyone ever wonder why the criminals were able to bamboozle the entire town and police squad with their schemes only to be foiled by a dog and four stoner kids who rolled into town two days earlier in a van that had to smell like malted hops, bong resin and dog farts? We’ve got some info on a new movie where the meddling kids don't necessarily fare so well.
Directed by Spencer Parsons and starring Ashley Spillers, Josephine Decker and Jonny Mars, Saturday Morning Massacrefollows some meddling paranormal investigators trying to make a buck. From the information we've managed to glean thus far, there is no talking dog in this film.
The film is currently in post-production and the official website titsandaxe.

Violet Crown Cinema downtown is gearing up to open April 29. If you can't wait that long, Austin Film Society is holding a fundraiser preview at the new theater on Wednesday, April 27. Afs founder Richard Linklater has selected eight titles from the Criterion Collection to screen in the theaters that night; you can pick a single or double-feature ... and the ticket prices include garage parking downtown. I'm very tempted to slip down there for Paris, Texas myself. Look for my interview with Vcc manager Elizabeth Skerrett next week.Speaking of Linklater, local actor/artist Wiley Wiggins will be drinking and live-tweeting during a broadcast of Dazed and Confused tonight at 6 pm on cable TV network Current. The SXSW Texas Shorts screening is a diverse and impressive mix of shorts made in Texas or by Texas filmmakers. While the nine films range widely in their subjects and filmmaking styles, many of them are either dark or darkly funny, exploring everything from substance abuse to a murderous automated pool cleaner. Collections of short films can be hit or miss, but I enjoyed all the Texas Shorts selections. The smallish crowd at the screening on March 15 at the Rollins Theatre seemed very appreciative of the films also.
The most interesting of the lot is Chainsaw Found Jesus, directed by Spencer Parsons (I'll Come Running). Described as a "suburban fairy tale," the Austin-made film is a tragicomic story about two fathers and their sons who spend an afternoon together. While the kids entertain themselves with porn magazines and a neighborhood walk, the fathers do a drug deal in the garage...

You may recall that in my 2009 in Review article, I named the Austin Film Festival's "Made in Texas" monthly screenings as "Film Series I Most Want to Return in 2010." I'm happy to report that Made in Texas is returning this month -- I'm sure my article had everything to do with it -- and will run through September.
The series kicks off on Wednesday, March 10 with Roadie, the 1980 Alan Rudolph film that was shot on location around Austin. The movie stars Meat Loaf and Art Carney, but the cast also includes Sonny Carl Davis (The Whole Shootin' Match), Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel, and a number of other musicians.
The films will be shown monthly on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm in the Texas Spirit Theater at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. Admission is free for Aff and Texas State History Museum members, and $5 for everyone else.
