The team behind Apple TV+’s big-budget European drama Constellation took to the stage in Cologne this week to talk developing the psychological sci-fi drama, technical challenges of shooting zero gravity, almost casting Jeff Bridges and why they spent nearly $550,000 on space suits. You can watch a video of the session at the bottom.
During a production masterclass session at Seriencamp, series producer Daniel Hetzer and line producer Jakob Neuhausser from Constellation co-producer Turbine Studios revealed the budget for the series sat around €100M ($110M), with Apple providing around 70% and a €10M grant coming from the state-run German Motion Picture Fund.
Turbine, which has bases in the UK and Germany, had initially joined forces with France’s Haut et Court TV to create the project. Together they attached writer and show creator Peter Harness and then sold a global license to the project to Apple, before attracting around €30M in soft money from Germany,...

Deadline reports that Apple TV+ has cancelled Constellation after one season. The sci-fi psychological thriller series starred Noomi Rapace as an astronaut who returns to Earth after a disaster in space, only to find that key pieces of her life seem to be missing.
The first season of Constellation wrapped up its eight-episode run in March, and unfortunately for fans, it sounds like there are quite a number of plot threads left hanging now that the series has been cancelled.
Along with Rapace, Constellation also stars Jonathan Banks, James D’Arcy, Julian Looman, William Catlett, Barbara Sukowa and Rosie and Davina Coleman. The show, which was created and written by Peter Harness, dealt with “one woman’s desperate quest to expose the truth about the hidden history of space travel and for her to recover all that she has lost.“

“Obviously, it was a fairly big ask,” declares visual effects supervisor Doug Larmour about the outrageously complicated visual effects deployed in the big budget Apple TV+ sci-fi thriller “Constellation.” For our recent webchat he adds, “Having worked in a few space projects before and knowing that there’s a solution for zero gravity. You build sets with take-off rooms and ceilings, and you build a wind system and a flying system with some really good special effects people. You get a whole lot of wonderful people to remove all your wires for you. And then you in terms of floating objects, it’s C.G.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

A catchy nickname for Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer crew has emerged during awards season: the Oppenhomies. During his acceptance speech for best actor at Saturday’s SAG Awards, Cillian Murphy made sure to give credit where it’s due by revealing the specific Oppenhomie who came up with it.
“Just an Fyi on that exquisite moniker, Oppenhomies, that was actually invented by the great Olivia Thirlby,” Murphy said of the actress who plays Lilli Hornig in Nolan’s epic about American scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer and the events surrounding the creation of the atomic bomb. “So Olivia, I think you should immediately trademark that and start merching the shit out of it because someone else will.”
Murphy then got serious by calling his peers “the greatest group of actors I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.” It’s a long and impressive list, too, that includes Emily Blunt,...

Constellation is a brand new series launching on Apple TV+, and to mark the occasion we spoke to several of the talents involved in bringing this thought-provoking sci-fi thriller to our screens. To begin we spoke to the duo that is Noomi Rapace and Jonathan Banks, which allowed for us to *finally* ask the latter if he used Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh as a reference point for his depiction of Mike in Breaking Bad.
We also spoke to both James D’Arcy and William Catlett as they speak fondly of their former teachers, both in education and in their careers, with special nods to those who have set them on the path they’re on today. And finally we get into deep conversation with those behind the lens, speaking to both Peter Harness and Michelle MacLaren, as we talk about the parallels between creating art and being on a film or TV set,...

The new Apple TV+ series “Constellation” is a space drama, a category in which its deep-pocketed platform has developed something of a preoccupation. But the show also exemplifies a type of series so recognizable it’s become practically a genre unto itself: a story that calls for the concision of a feature film that’s been stretched out to fill a TV-sized number of episodes.
“Constellation” stars Noomi Rapace as Jo Ericsson, an astronaut who survives a deadly collision at the International Space Station — only to experience disturbing visions back on Earth. The what/why/how of Jo’s experience in orbit could make for a gripping mystery, but creator and sole screenwriter Peter Harness stretches these questions over eight hours, killing their momentum and stretching the show’s worthwhile elements far too thin.

In this trippy space thriller, cool-headed Swedish astronaut Jo Ericsson (Noomi Rapace) returns to Earth after a freak accident at the international space station, but something at home seems not quite right with her husband, Magnus Taylor (James D’Arcy), and young daughter, Alice. A hint to just how strange Jo’s world gets over Constellation‘s eight episodes as she tries to unravel what happened: Alice’s favorite toy is a plush white rabbit. “Jo’s used to being practical, and she gets dragged into this really weird reality of trying to figure out what’s going on and if she lost her mind, or if it’s a huge conspiracy or something else,” says Rapace. “Her fight to reunite with her daughter is so painful and beautiful, and I could really relate to it in many ways, being a mother myself. For years, films like Gravity and The Cloverfield Paradox as well as countless others have used the station as the setting for disaster, but this year alone has had more than one project featuring it. One of the very first sounds of Apple TV+’s Constellation is a woman’s terrified voice on a cassette tape, insisting in Russian that “the world is the wrong way around.” As statements go, it’s completely impenetrable — what does that mean? — an only more upsetting for it. It is, in short, the perfect way to set the tone for a series that, if nothing else, excels at tapping into the uncanny.
Over the season’s eight hour-long episodes, time goes missing, reflections refuse to do as they’re told, the dead return to life and then vanish again. It’s no wonder astronaut Jo Ericsson (Noomi Rapace) feels so unmoored from the Earth that she’s returned to — and for a while, Constellation runs on the sheer unsettling thrill of watching Jo try to puzzle out what’s really going on. Screenwriter Peter Harness is perhaps best known as a regular writer on the revived series of Doctor Who, where he was responsible for Kill The Moon, one of the more divisive episodes among the fandom. Now, Harness is back in the world of science fiction for eight part drama Constellation, starring Noomi Rapace.
The synopsis reads as follows:
Constellation stars Noomi Rapace as Jo — an astronaut who returns to Earth after a disaster in space — only to discover that key pieces of her life seem to be missing. The space adventure is an exploration of the dark edges of human psychology, and one woman’s desperate quest to expose the truth about the hidden history of space travel and recover all that she has lost.

Hollywood works in phases. We’re in the middle of a vast superhero movie phase, which, maybe, seems to be on the downslide. Twenty-five years ago, war movies were all the rage in the wake of Saving Private Ryan, and once those taped off, historical epics became the blockbuster of choice for studios. Indeed, it was the smash success of Braveheart and Gladiator that paved the way for this run of films which started to tape off in the mid-aughts after a few mammothly pricey films, such as The Last Samurai and Troy, only earned modest profits for their studios. One such film was 20th Century Fox’s Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. It earned critical raves but cost too much to become the franchise Fox was hoping for, with it being based on a long-running series of books by Patrick O’Brien. Yet, the movie holds...

"The Exorcist" remains one of the most frightening and intense horror films to this day. Even after 50 years, time has done little to diminish its power to shock and terrify audiences. Based on the popular novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty, director William Friedkin's "The Exorcist" was a massive hit among moviegoers who were thrilled by its story of a sweet young girl getting possessed by a demon who forces her to commit all kinds of obscene and horrible acts.
Despite the positive response from audiences and critics alike, the film also generated considerable controversy for its graphic nature and religious themes, with some even claiming that there was an evil in the celluloid itself. Still, all of the wild stories only added to the movie's legacy, further cementing its place in cinema history.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for "Oppenheimer."
Despite what the loudest voices on social media might have you believe, the job of any biopic isn't necessarily to reenact history with complete accuracy -- that's what textbooks and documentaries are for, after all. Rather, it's much more satisfying when it's about storytellers finding the emotional, humanizing truth at the core of figures whom we'll never truly know or understand. That's never stopped anyone from pointing out such historical errors and exaggerations anyway, of course, but do those complaints become more meaningful when the direct descendants of real-world figures are the ones voicing such thoughts?
Christopher Nolan's "Oppenheimer" is destined to land at or near the top of several "Best of" lists by the end of the year (check out Chris Evangelista's review for /Film here), but at least one member of J. Robert Oppenheimer's family has a certain misgiving...

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” has generated a lot of headlines due to its nudity and sex scenes, the first of the director’s career. Cillian Murphy, who plays the title character in Nolan’s biographical drama, was recently asked by GQ UK to weigh in on all of the buzz surrounding the “Oppenheimer” sex scenes, to which Murphy said they were “vital” to the film. The film depicts sex between Oppenheimer and Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh), a physician with whom Oppenheimer had a romance with before and during his marriage to Katherine Puening (Emily Blunt).
“I think they were vital in this in this movie,” Murphy explained. “I think the relationship that he has with Jean Tatlock is one of the most crucial emotional parts of the film. I think if they’re key to the story then they’re worthwhile. Listen, no one likes doing them, they’re the...

Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan told the crowd at the film’s London premiere Thursday that the cast of his film had left and are “off to write their picket signs” as SAG-AFTRA prepares to go on strike.
“I have to to acknowledge the work of our incredible cast, led by Cillian Murphy,” Nolan said from the stage. “The list is enormous — Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Kenneth Branagh, Rami Malek and so many more. … You’ve seen them here earlier on the red carpet. Unfortunately, they are off to write their picket signs for what we believe to be an imminent strike by SAG, joining one of my guilds, the Writers Guild, in the struggle for fair wages for working members of their union.”

The London premiere of Universal’s largely anticipated title Oppenheimer is set to go ahead this evening despite a possible SAG-AFTRA strike on the horizon.
Director Christopher Nolan is scheduled to attend and sources close to the event have confirmed that cast members Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Kenneth Branagh and James D’Arcy are still expected to hit the red carpet this evening in the UK capital to pose for photos and conduct interviews in advance of the film’s screening.
As of yesterday, the red carpet was scheduled to go ahead at 4.45pm BST, which would still allow time for the cast to participate in press without conflicting with the SAG-AFTRA strike rules and thereby give them an opportunity to talk about the project before the curtains close on any press opportunities for the actors in the wake of the strike.

Set to a dramatic score from Ludwig Göransson, the newly-dropped teaser offers closer looks at the key players of the Manhattan Project, as portrayed by a star-studded cast including Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Leslie Groves Jr. and Tom Conti, who appears briefly as a somber looking Albert Einstein.
“Oppenheimer” centers around the legacy of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Murphy), who is credited as the inventor of the atomic bomb. Based on the biographical novel “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” the film follows the physicist as he works alongside a team of government scientists to develop nuclear weapons in the early 1940s.
