- Cawthorn made his stage debut in 1872 at the age of four. At nine, he went to England and played in music halls for four years. In 1898, Cawthorn made his debut on Broadway and carried on a successful career for some twenty-five years. Moving to Hollywood in 1927, he began a career as a character actor. - Born into a family of minstrel show performers he entered show business at age three.
- Went into burlesque during the 1880s, where he thrived for over a decade. Eventually added a "Dutch" (German) characterization to his repertoire, and it was to become a mainstay of both his stage and screen careers. From 1898 through 1922 he was a major star of Broadway.
