Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is doing something different for “The Smashing Machine.” The mixed martial arts biopic is the first film that could get the blockbuster action star some awards attention. And a first-look photo from the film reveals that Johnson looks different than usual.
Studio A24 released the photo on X. It shows Johnson in character as Mark Kerr, a wrestler and Mma fighter. Johnson appears to have some facial prosthetics, his characteristic tattoos are covered up, and his usually bald head sports a wig. He looks a lot like he did when he emerged as a pro wrestling star in the late ‘90s.

Despite what headlines say, not every movie transformation leaves actors looking "unrecognizable," but we promise when it comes to describing Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson in A24's first look at "The Smashing Machine," this isn't hyperbole. The wrestler turned actor whose on-screen career has so far been composed largely of broad, action-packed blockbusters is doing something different with the upcoming indie film, and he has a decidedly different look to go with it.
The look is so different, in fact, that when I first saw the still A24 posted to X (formerly Twitter) today with the caption "First look at Benny Safdie's The Smashing Machine starring @TheRock and Emily Blunt," I found myself looking to each side of the mixed martial arts fighter in the center of the shot, assuming Johnson was actually somewhere in the background. Do you smell what The Rock is cooking? For the last decade-plus (at least post-Pain & Gain), Dwayne Johnson has been serving up four-quadrant blockbuster slop. Thankfully, he seems to be turning a new direction for The Smashing Machine, which marks the solo directorial feature debut for Benny Safdie after parting ways with his brother Josh Safdie, who’ll be going on to make his forthcoming Adam Sandler-led movie about the baseball trading card industry.
As for The Smashing Machine, with A24 kicking off production recently the first image has now dropped. The film, which marks a Jungle Cruise reunion for Johnson and Emily Blunt, captures the story of legendary Mma fighter Mark Kerr, who was afflicted with addiction and a rocky marriage with Dawn Staples (Blunt).

If Heat and The Insider are agreed upon as Michael Mann’s all-time best films, what is the director’s most underrated feature to date? Is it Thief? The Keep? Manhunter? Public Enemies? Nah. There’s only one acceptable answer: 2004’s criminally overlooked nocturnal neo-noir Collateral. Featuring a rare villainous turn by Tom Cruise and a restrained Oscar-nominated performance by Jamie Foxx, the L.A. crime story was the first film in history to utilize the Viper FilmStream High Definition Camera. The digital format that David Fincher would later adopt for use on Zodiac and Benjamin Button. Beyond the cutting-edge technology, the remote locations Mann and his production team gave viewers a much different glimpse of Los Angeles away from the glamor of Hollywood and into the seedy, sinister parts of town rarely seen on the big screen.

Adam Sandler and Josh Safdie’s follow-up to 2020’s Uncut Gems is still in the works, following several delays and setbacks.
Here’s a project that we’ve been reporting on for years now and whilst this story won’t confirm anything, it’s fresh news that claims that the movie is still alive. The movie in question is Josh Safdie’s untitled baseball film which will star Adam Sandler.
The project is one of interest because it will mark the pair’s next collaboration after 2020’s Uncut Gems, the nail-biting drama that was bought to us courtesy of Netflix and had audiences everywhere shifting uncomfortably in their seats for the majority of its runtime.
Last year’s strikes were the main culprit for this one not happening sooner. The film is said to focus around baseball and as such, needs to shoot during the sport’s season. Last year...

There are a plenty of longtime Saturday Night cast members, yet there were no big exits — or hints of departures — on tonight’s Season 49 finale of the venerable NBC late-night program.
No SNL veterans were tearing up at the end of their sketches like Kate McKinnon did in the 2022 finale, it was all smiles and fist bumps at the curtain call, and, after another brutal joke swap, Colin Jost and Michael Che wrapped their 10th season together on Weekend Update by wishing everyone a great summer.
This was to be expected, given that no one from this year’s 17-strong troupe would willingly miss next year’s big celebrations – The Big 50.
Host Jake Gyllenhaal set the stage for what is to come in his opening monologue, noting that the finale was “the last episode before the big anniversary season.”

When Emma Stone, star of Disney’s Cruella and Searchlight’s Poor Things, introduced CEO Bob Iger at the company’s Upfronts presentation this week – the first time that the former TV chief had been on stage at the advertising rodeo in 30 years – it was clear that this is no longer just a TV event.
“To say a lot has changed since 1994 would be an incredible understatement and I’m not just talking about the color of my hair, or my fashion choices,” Iger said.
Stars such as Ryan Reynolds, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell and Jake Gyllenhaal were all highly visible presences across the week to promote their recent and upcoming feature films.
It marked a sea change for the Madison Avenue set, who were previously treated to a cavalcade of television stars promoting the small-screen, usually fresh from the broadcast pilot process. Unlike April’s CinemaCon,...

Happy Gilmore and Netflix are ready to hit the links together for a sequel. But Adam Sandler’s original comedy is on the back nine when it comes to streaming.
Sandler is ready to resurrect the character that helped him become a comedy icon. It will be another installment in the actor’s lucrative deal with Netflix, significantly adding to Sandler’s net worth. However, time is limited to catch up with Happy Gilmore on Netflix.

Even months before its release, Hiroyuki Sanada’s latest series was already garnering massive anticipation from fans. And, needless to say, as soon as it hit the screens, Shōgun didn’t hesitate to immaculately deliver to all of those expectations and do justice to the source material, becoming one of the biggest talks of the entire world and an internet sensation overnight.

However, that just might be about to change following recent reports about the series getting a second and third season greenlit by FX and being led by Sanada. Unarguably enough, that sounds just like what happened with Game of Thrones — i.e. the very saga Sanada’s series was being widely compared with — and things don’t seem to be looking all too good because of that.

Omg, it's finally happened.
Adam Sandler fans are getting a Happy Gilmore 2, nearly 30 years in the making.
The sequel of the 1996 hit comedy is a dual project between Netflix and Happy Madison Productions, Sandler's company.
Sandler hooked a generation of viewers with his crass, blue-collar character infiltrating one of the most white-collar sports.
With his anger management issues and working-class mannerisms, we felt like he was one of us. And we couldn't help but root for him to win.
Happy Gilmore couldn't cut it as a hockey player, but it turned out he was hellah good at golf -- with a custom hockey stick golf club.
And fans loved him, turning golf into a spectator sport that drew all the wrong crowds.
At least, that's how Shooter McGavin -- played by Christopher McDonald -- felt. He tried so hard to earn that gold jacket, only to lose it to a scuzzy amateur golfer wannabe.

If being hilarious is a crime, then, Adam Sandler would be the guiltiest man alive. The actor is just one of those rare comedic talents giving back-to-back hits, which make the audience laugh their heads off. Throughout his stellar acting career, Sandler has done a ton of films, but his most popular film would be Happy Gilmore.

A Happy Gilmore sequel has been greenlit at Netflix, with Adam Sandler returning to star. More details here.
Back in March, there were reports that a sequel to Adam Sandler’s 1996 golf comedy Happy Gilmore had been written, and actor Christopher McDonald had read it. Given the popularity of the film, it seemed to be a question not of if, but when.
We now have the answer, as the sequel has officially been greenlit by Netflix.
The original film, directed by regular collaborator Denis Dugan and written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy, followed Sandler as the titular character, an aspiring ice hockey player who enters a high-profile golfing tournament to earn money to buy his grandmother’s house.
Though his angry outbursts and profane patter initially cause outrage, his skill and tenacity eventually win through in the end. Featuring memorable supporting turns from the much missed Carl Weathers, the imposing...

There is lots of news dribbling out of Netflix today.
While we don’t have many details, we might as well get the discussion started.
Here’s what we’ve got.
Adam Sandler Revives Happy Gilmore
For fans of Adam Sandler, the movie Happy Gilmore might be one of his greatest achievements.
Golfers rarely get the movie star treatment despite the amount of money that goes to the winners, but this 1996 movie uses adversity to push him toward the big prize.
Today, Netflix announced that they’d be reviving Mr. Gilmore, but little else is known.
Should some of Happy’s old rivals return?
Christopher McDonald played Happy’s rival Shooter McGavin, and he mentioned the project in March.
Whether that means he’ll be along for the ride remains to be seen.

For fans of Adam Sandler, the movie Happy Gilmore might be one of his greatest achievements.
Golfers rarely get the movie star treatment despite the amount of money that goes to the winners, but this 1996 movie uses adversity to push him toward the big prize.

Netflix may be a new-tech company, but it approached advertisers Wednesday with old-school TV talk: The company aims to make dozens of shows and movies that people like to watch and discuss..
During an upfront presentation at Pier59 Studios, executives from the streaming giant showcased a msssuve pipeline of content that included two Christmas Day games from the NFL, a year of WWE matches and a new movie that features the return of Cameron Diaz, who will come-star with Jamie Foxx in “Back in Action.” The company also called attention to a new series from Mindy Kaling that stars Kate Hudson. Diaz, Foxx, Kaling and Hudson all made appearances in front of a small cadre of media buyers and journalists.
“At a time when the competition is pulling back, we are investing,” said Bela Bajaria, the company’s chief content officer.

Netflix is tap, tap, tapping into one of Adam Sandler’s most beloved characters, Happy Gilmore, for a sequel to the Saturday Night Live alum’s 1996 comedy hole-in-one! On Wednesday, Netflix announced Happy Gilmore 2 during its Upfront presentation, confirming Adam Sandler’s return as the ill-tempered hockey player turned professional golfer.
Happy Gilmore star Christopher MacDonald was the first to say Adam Sandler is developing Happy Gilmore 2 in April. In the original comedy, MacDonald plays Happy’s nemesis on the golf course, Shooter McGavin. During an interview with Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan, MacDonald said he recently spoke with Sandler, who surprised him with a sequel script for the duo’s 1996 sports comedy.
“I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,'” McDonald said. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft...

A sequel to Happy Gilmore is officially coming to Netflix.
The streamer officially announced Happy Gilmore 2 with Adam Sandler returning in the starring role during its upfront presentation to advertisers on Wednesday.
Released in 1996, Happy Gilmore starred Sandler as a failed hockey player with a power slapshot and massive temper who tries his hand at golf. Nearly three decades later, it remains one of Sandler’s most beloved comic ventures.
Sandler previously expressed interest in making a Happy Gilmore sequel in a 2021. At the time, he floated the possibility of centering the film around a senior golf tournament, but cautioned that nothing had been written.
However, earlier this year, Christopher McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin in the original film, let it slip that Sandler was working on a draft for Happy Gilmore 2. Sandler’s longtime friend and collaborator Drew Barrymore subsequently confirmed (via Sandler himself) that the project was “in process.

Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow has set her next feature film at Netflix. The streamer confirmed the project during its upfront presentation to advertisers on Wednesday afternoon in New York.

The MTV Movie & TV Awards is taking another break. Variety has confirmed that the event, which would have normally taken place around this time of year, will instead sit 2024 out — with an eye toward returning next year, perhaps in a different, “reimagined” format.
It’s been a bumpy decade for the MTV Movie & TV Awards, which first began in 1992 (as the MTV Movie Awards). Last’s year’s event was forced to pivot to a pre-taped clip show in light of the Hollywood writers’ strike, as host Drew Barrymore bowed out and the WGA announced plans to picket the ceremony.
Meanwhile, in 2020, the MTV Movie & TV Awards also didn’t take place, due in part to the Covid-19 pandemic, but also because the network had planned to move the franchise (long a spring/early summer staple) to December. Ultimately, instead of an awards show, MTV ran a “MTV Movie & TV...

Actor Adam Sandler has delivered a string of commercially successful comedy movies but has never been a favorite of the critics. Sandler’s career has seen little critical acclaim despite the popularity of his films, which had led to the actor openly calling out critics for being too harsh on his work.
Uncut Gems star Adam Sandler has faced harsh reviews from critics much like George Lucas.
However, before Sandler, it was George Lucas who unapologetically confronted the critics after the divisive reaction to his Star Wars prequels. Lucas refused to listen to the critics and bashed them in his interview, much like Sandler has also done in the recent past. Here is why Lucas was the original critics’ kryptonite and how Sandler has also followed the same path.

Before "Star Wars," there was "Thx 1138." A strange, dystopic science fiction movie packed with big ideas up to its eyeballs, "Thx 1138" is now mostly known as the feature directorial debut of one George Walton Lucas Jr. (though it also came back in conversation when the best episode of "Andor" paid homage to it). The future Lucasfilm founder originally created this story of repressed emotions and stymied sexuality as a student film, but by the time it was reimagined as a feature, it had gained backing from Warner Bros.
Lucas' American Zoetrope co-founder Francis Ford Coppola also had faith in the movie, and served as one of its producers. "Thx 1138" starred Robert Duvall, then already known for his work on stage and television, not to mention in films like "To Kill A Mockingbird," "M*A*S*H," and "True Grit." Future "Halloween" actor Donald Pleasence co-starred, along with a then-unknown actress named Maggie McOmie.

In his monologue heading into Mother’s Day weekend, Jimmy Fallon tried to offer some (comedic) advice for former President Donald Trump.
“This Sunday is Mother’s Day,” Fallon began. “So, for the next 48 hours, if you see an Amazon delivery van, pull over like it’s an ambulance, Ok?”
He continued, noting that people will spend around $250 on Mother’s Day gifts.
“But don’t worry, the best gift is free — which is taking the kids somewhere so mom can have five minutes of peace!” Fallon quipped. “That’s what they want.”
“Also, just a quick word of advice to former President Trump,” Fallon added, addressing the Republican candidate. “Whatever you were thinking of spending on Melania this year, I’d double it.”

NBC is rolling out the red carpet to celebrate Saturday Night Live’s 50th anniversary.
Ahead of its upfront presentation next week to Madison Avenue ad buyers, the network on Friday announced that it has scheduled a three-hour primetime special to honor the anniversary. The special, which will also be live, is set to air Sunday, Feb. 16, from 8-11 p.m. Et.
That will cap what NBC says will be a “celebratory weekend” honoring the Lorne Michaels-created sketch show.
Additional details have not yet been announced as Michaels and company are in the home stretch of closing out SNL’s 49th season with alum Maya Rudolph set to host this weekend and Jake Gyllenhaal on deck for the May 18 season finale.
News that NBC would formally celebrate SNL’s 50th anniversary comes as no surprise as Michaels said last January that he was already planning for the February event.

When we meet some actors in comedies, we form a particular opinion about their acting skills and whatever they are capable of. For example, there’s nothing more suitable for each other than Adam Sandler and romantic comedies. But if you see him playing in Uncut Gems you’ll see that he is much more than you give him credit for.
The same goes about, for example, Emily Blunt. Despite the fact that she has been in a handful of rather serious movies, the first role that comes to mind when thinking about the actress is without doubt her role of Miranda Priestly’s assistant in the Devil Wears Prada.
Yes, she has come a long way since that, earning her an Oscar nomination for Oppenheimer, but there’s a movie with her in a leading role that can be easily chosen as the one where she gave her best performance.

Magnolia Pictures has released a brand new trailer for "Thelma." This film may not be on your radar just yet, but after watching this trailer, it probably should be. Serving as the feature directorial debut of Josh Margolin, the big hook here is that Oscar-nominee June Squibb is getting to lead a revenge thriller at the age of 94. More than that, it marks the first time that Squibb has been given a leading role in a movie in her long, storied career. Check the trailer out for yourself above.
The trailer is impossibly charming, even though there is an insidious plot at the center of it all. Squibb's character gets scammed out of a bunch of money and, with no options left, she sets out on a path of revenge. It's not unrealistically action-packed or anything like that, but it comes off as quite delightful. Squibb is paired with the late Richard Roundtree,...
